Don Peebles explains how Jay Z’s come up from drug dealer to rapper to businessman, puts him in a box.
During a sit-down conversation with Nitecap With Peter Bailey, real estate developer Don Peebles shared his thoughts on how Jay Z’s transition from drug dealer to businessman, is “a safe example for white America.” The Peebles Corporation CEO compared Jay Z’s come up to his own, which he says “doesn’t fit the box.”
“That is how American society is comfortable defining black men, unfortunately,” Don Peebles said. “And we perpetuate it, because we as a community will hold them up as role models. We will buy into that. It’s a safe example for white America to see black men doing this as opposed to running a business like I am or being Robert Smith, Vista. That’s different. That doesn’t fit the box. Jay Z fits the box. And he fits the code…Entertainment is a business, but the entertainers are not those that are setting policy or the role models held up for their kids.”
Peebles later criticized the Fox television show “Empire,” which features another drug dealer-turned-businessman.
“Here, we’re showing our young people that you got to be a drug dealer,” he said. “And even when you get ahead and are running a public company, you gotta kill people. And your kid, instead of trying to be a businessperson, you’ve got two of them wanting to be Hip Hop stars. So, it’s a story that fits and it gets perpetuated by the media and what is comfortable for us. And then we will buy into a show like ‘Empire.'”

This guy acts like Jay promotes drug dealing. Jay only told what he did in the past. I don’t ever recall him telling fans to sell drugs so they can become successful later on in life.

Everyone isn’t the same. We all come from difference walks of life and face different circumstances and obstacles. There is Jay. But there is also Oprah. Is he mad that America celebrates Oprah as well? The funny thing is that he is the one who is placing others in a box while pointing the fingers at others. Jay is one of the most diversified businessmen in the country so how is he in a box? Sometimes people mean well but are a bit misguided in their analysis of what it is that is actually happening in the world around them.
Agreed, he failed to touch on how successful business people gained their wealth. Was it from ripping old women out of their life savings? Selling bogus mutual funds? Selling Prescription drugs? (worse than street drugs), Selling subprime loans to people who can’t afford it? There are all sort of crooks that fit into the mold of being not above water, but not selling crack. It’s all the same/
Peebles is the worse crook of them all, look at all the lawsuits he’s in. And he pretends like he cares about minorities, but his entire staff is white people. NOT ONE BLACK PERSON WORKS FOR PEEBLES.

I think some missed the point with the title. Someone from Europe once said to me that only in America do we focus on race. Everywhere else it’s a focus of nationality (& class). Both ways are divide&conquer tactics. Focus is best served on values. That way we can benefit quicker from coexistence. I’ve meet soooo many poor whites in my life BUT I’m still trained to think that ALL whites are getting over & privileged. It’s simple a non-truth.

How could this Mad guy calling Jay Z a drug dealer who fit in the box? Jay never claimed to be proud of his past. He was told the story humbly how and what has happened in his life. He does not promote drugs business as authentic or good step to someone to be come business person. Please Leave Jay Z alone.
