JAY-Z Accused Of Doing More Harm Than Good With $300M Philadelphia Scholarship Fund

JAY-Z has received backlash after announcing Roc Nation’s involvement with a $300 million scholarship fund in Philadelphia.

Hov’s Roc Nation company declared last week that they will holding events to inform residents about the fund, which is available to students in the city in the form of scholarships to private schools for grade K-12 through the PASS (Pennsylvania Award for Student Success) program.

The philanthropic effort has been criticized by politicians and members of the public for allegedly undermining public schools in favor of private education.

One critic wrote on social media: “Just to be clear for those not in Pennsylvania, the legislation Jay-Z is supporting here is a Republican-led effort to gut public education, spearheaded by future Trump cabinet member Jeffrey Yass.”

Another slammed the proposal by saying: “Whether Jay-Z or the upper middle-class family on the block: if you have resources and don’t allocate them to local public schools, you are making a moral and political choice. Taking children out of public schools in favor of private IS PRECISELY what hurts the most vulnerable.”

Prior to the negative reception, Roc Nation Managing Director of Philanthropy Dania Diaz said in a statement: “We have enjoyed such a special connection with Philadelphians, so we’ve made it our mission to invest in the long-term success of the city’s changemakers.”

“Impact starts with the students and with awareness,” she continued. “We want to empower the youth and families with the knowledge to pursue their scholastic dreams, make their voices heard and become the leaders of tomorrow.”

JAY-Z has been very active in philanthropy in recent years, raising $20 million for college students last year.

The rapper’s Shawn Carter Foundation raised the money to help college students from low-income backgrounds pursue further education.

There were numerous donations given including $10 million from Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez, which will allow the foundation to build out their international exchange program, scholarships, community goodwill and emergency assistance programs.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey also donated $2 million to the foundation as part of his annual contribution.

The Shawn Carter Foundation was co-founded in 2003 by JAY-Z and his mother, Gloria Carter, and has provided students with college scholarships and tours to historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), study abroad opportunities, wealth building programs and more for underserved youth and families from disenfranchised communities.

    1. JAY Z is only out for self. If you see him selling something outside of music, it’s usually bs.
Having the Nets in Brooklyn only harmed the poor and less fortunate. Signing with the NFL a year after urging artists Travis to boycott the superbowl halftime.
Ye revived his career his career TWICE and he still turned his back on him even after that man supported the cash grab that was “Tidal”.
      I can go all day

    2. All they teach you in public schools today is how to feel sorry for yourself and which bathroom RuPaul gets to cop a squat in. Anybody who can afford to send their kids somewhere else and doesn’t should be charged with child abuse.

    3. How much of his actual money goes to his philanthropic efforts? Sounds like he just puts a name to someone else’s idea for marketing efforts. These are the questions journalists used to provide answers to. Now, social media speculates and drops opinions then turned into facts for the uneducated.

    4. JayZ supporting school choice. GOVERNMENT schools suck. If you’re poor, you’re forced into a lot quality school district. School choice is a “far right” idea… aka, common sense. Anyone who defends government centers is an idiot. Privately ran schools are leaps and bounds superior, in ever which way you can name.

    5. It’s crazy because nearly all leftist politicians I’ve seen come out against school choice simultaneously have their own children in private schools. They KNOW public schools suck in comparison. Home school is best. Private or charter school next. Public schools going to hell. The grades aren’t even legitimate. They wrongfully pass kids through in order to receive funding. Illiterate fools graduate and can’t even read a harry potter book.

      1. @terry oh for sure, I’m not saying they only pass kids thorugh in poorer locations. Public schools in general need to have certain amounts of success to obtain funding. So, what do they do? Cheat.

    6. There are so many different funny and some stupid comments here. The reason why you have so many personal experiences with public school. There is nothing wrong with public school. All I see is people complainabout the government. The issue here that people need to also look at there local schoolboard and local city counsel with problems with the school system. Wake the heck up and hold them accountable.

    7. School waste of time your father a plumber have the kid learn that rather than black civil rights change the oil of a car plant trees bush walking study bird song and identify the bird how to groom a car the church youth group go pick up rubbish some where

    8. there are two kinds of people in this world the winners and the losers the winners just shut the fuck up and do what they’re told the losers languish around the house all day feeling oppressed and get these people off my dick the winners succeed no questions asked the losers they know how the damn real world is but get fucked over for believing it oh you want to be on american idol fuck it the insurmountable odds are already against you

      1. Winners and loosers I agree I think winners are the ones trying no matter how bad the odds are the loosers are the ones that don’t try one man said he did not make his shoes for the poor but for the rich but it does make sense he would not have what he has today if he marketed his shoes for poor people I think what jay z did was give a incentive to poor children to work harder get good grades and apply to the private school to better their choices of where they attend school .I don’t know how private school work but that’s just my thoughts

    9. Not paying or hiring enough staff in schools is more of a problem than what Jay-Z is doing. This is the case of someone using a celebrity’s name as a way to gain attention to their own individual agenda.
