JAY-Z Says His New Netflix Film Is A Fight For Black Representation: ‘We Have Voices’

JAY-Z was in the UK on Wednesday (October 6) to attend the BFI London Film Festival at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. Hov’s appearance at the event was in support of The Harder They Fall, the upcoming Netflix movie he produced, which he believes is an important vehicle for Black representation in Western films.

“Just to see us represented, you know, with a lot of films we didn’t see ourselves in Westerns, as if we didn’t exist,” he told PA Media. “It is almost odd, people think that it’s like a caricature, that they are playing roles, but they’re not playing roles.”

He added, “These names like Stagecoach Mary, all the actors in this, they really existed in this time, so just see us represented and see that we have voices. There were so many towns that people didn’t know about, so to bring interesting stories to the big screen, and also educate, any time you can do that is just a blessing.”

Beyoncé also attended the event alongside her husband and posted photos from the night on Instagram.

While on the red carpet, JAY-Z had a witty response when asked if he could ride a horse — just like he needed the actors to do on screen.

“I can ride a Porsche,” he joked. “It’s got horsepower.”

Starring Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Regina King, Delroy Lindo and Lakeith Stanfield, The Harder They Fall serves as the directorial debut for Jeymes Samuel, also known as the The Bullitts. The producer/filmmaker is known for his collaborations with the likes of Jay Electronica and Yasiin Bey, as well as working on the soundtrack album for 2013’s The Great Gatsby alongside JAY-Z.

“I’m fortunate [JAY-Z’s] one of my closest friends,” Samuel told Shadow & Act in June. “Working with Jay is like breathing. It’s literally just like breathing. He’s a really great collaborator. He really believes in collaboration and bringing everything together. What the public doesn’t know and what would surprise them is how versed he is in all these different aspects of art.”

He continued, “So even when I’m writing the script, I’ll be going back and forth with him all the time. I’ll be stuck on a particular scene, and he would have actually been through something like that in real life and advise me on how the outcome would be or what the character’s motivation would be.”

The Harder They Fall is set for release on October 22, with a collaborative song between JAY-Z and Kid Cudi also arriving as part of the film.

    1. You already sold out your race by joining forces with the NFL. This won’t make up for it.

Go home and fix the family you betrayed.

      1. By “sold out” you mean getting the first black Superbowl Entertainment producer hired? True change only occurs when you have minority representation. You fake woke idiots prefer talk over action.

        1. By sold out i mean he pretended to side with kaepernick and then signed with the owners. “Were past kneeling”. Jay z is toxic. He betrayed his family as well. And don’t forget his tenure as Def Jam President. He spent 25 million promoting his dud Kingdom Come and gave almost nothing to so many other artists.

          1. Have you done the full research on Kaepernick? He’s a bozo. It’s a reason why everyone moved on from him. Look up Marcellus Wiley he breaks down everything I’ve been saying about Kaep.

        2. 1st as a token and only for PR not cuz they deserve it? a real boss owns a team might be hard for nfl but nba should be majority black owned by now this isnt the 90s when 3 black folks had 30M+ its 2020 theres hundreds if not a thousand enough capital to stand alone without massa involvement but they wont risk it to be broke again sold out and ran off to the hills to gated communities they own kind not allowed in, to each they own but jigga jus another sell out, its cool to blow your first million or few but after a while they just following “opressors” lead its now old/generational money and they just hoarding and laundering it, theres enough to lift us all up now its less than 15% of population just 50M of us dont need whit ey no mo

          1. mj cosby oprah 30 years later its hundreds of blacks with 30+M in capital n they aint spending in the hood they wearing blood diamonds buying(aundering) “art” every stae could easily have thousands of acres purchased start and build entire cities black owned but nope hundreds of millions on a streaming service thats fits on a 20 dolla micro sd card lol llpc its NEVA to late to stop acting like a b…. so maybe hell turn it around cant take it with ya
