Beyoncé recently turned 40 years old on September 4, and the megastar is gracefully embracing her fourth decade around the sun. On Thursday (September 23), Beyoncé penned a moving letter to her fans on her website addressing her new outlook on life now that she’s turned 40.
The Queen thanked her fans for all the love and birthday wishes sent her way in the opening lines of the letter. Most of it brought tears to her eyes with the number of posts, countdowns, curated playlists and more created by her fans.
“This is the first year that I really understand what it means to be alive and to live in the moment,” Beyoncé wrote in the letter. “It’s the first time that I have an understanding of how fragile life truly is, how hard life can be at times, and therefore how important it is to stop and smell the roses during the good times.”
She thought she knew that at 21 or 30 years old, but it turns out she didn’t. It took time for her to get it, but the journey made her joy grow deeper once she got there.

“There’s a freedom and liberation knowing that I’ve made it to the other side of my sacrifice,” she added. “I’m finally giving myself permission to enjoy the seeds I’ve worked so hard to plant my whole life. Whoever tried to condition women to feel that we are supposed to feel old or unhappy when we turn 40 got it ALL THE WAY F’d UP. This has absolutely been the best I’ve felt in my life. I’m so grateful to be GROWN, GROWN!”
Beyoncé has been celebrating her 40th birthday all month long with her husband, JAY-Z, in Italy on a mega yacht. The couple has been sharing clips of their vacation all over social media, such as them listening to Young Nudy’s Sli’merre project on a mega yacht.
