Jay Z And Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Among Grammy Award Winners

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards began this evening (January 26) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony kicked off with a performance from Jay Z and Beyonce. This year’s ceremony is hosted by LL Cool J for the third consecutive year.

Jay and Beyonce performed their collaborative hit “Drunk In Love to a crowd that included nominees Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Robin Thicke, and more.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won an early award for Best New Artist. While accepting the award, Macklemore celebrated the independent nature of their album The Heist. “We made this album without a record label, we made it independently, and we appreciate all the support,” he said.

Jay Z received the most nominations of any artist this year with his name up for nine awards, including within the of Best Rap Album category. Both Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, alongside Kanye West and Drake, are nominated for the same award.

Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are the only Hip Hop artists who were nominated within the coveted Album of the Year category this year, an award that has been given to Hip Hop artists only twice in the past in the cases of OutKast and Lauryn Hill. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were also the only Hip Hop artists nominated within the Song of the Year category for their chart-topper “Same Love.”

Earlier this week, rappers Joey Bada$$ and Nipsey Hussle weighed in on the Rap Album of the Year and Album of the Year categories. In an interview with MTV, Joey said that while he thinks Macklemore’s commercial appeal will win him the award, he thinks good kid, m.A.A.d. city deserves the nod. “That’s Grammys,” he said. “That’s what you got, but I personally feel like Kendrick deserves that more.” In an interview with XXL, Hussle said that he’s rooting for both nominees. “They both have their reasons to be recognized,” he said. “I’m curious to see how it goes. And they both from the West so I’m rooting for both of them.”

In an interview with The Source earlier this month, Macklemore himself admitted that he thinks the Best Rap Album award should be given to Kendrick Lamar. “In terms of [that category], I think it should go to Kendrick,” he said. “He’s family. TDE is family, and I understand why Hip-Hop would feel like Kendrick got robbed [if he didn’t win]. I’m not trying to compare albums; I think you can make an argument for both. With that being said, I am a huge supporter of what Kendrick does. And because of that, I would love to win in a different category. We obviously had massive success on commercial radio, and I think that, in ways, The Heist was a bigger album, but Kendrick has a better rap album.”

UPDATE: Jay Z and Justin Timberlake have been awarded a Grammy for their collaboration “Holy Grail.” The award was given within the Rap/Sung Collaboration category and Jay Z was also nominated for his collaboration with Beyonce. In his acceptance speech, Jay offered the award to his daughter Blue Ivy as a “gold sippy cup.”

Pharrell Williams was awarded a Grammy as Producer of the Year and appeared on stage alongside Daft Punk and Stevie Wonder to perform a medley of songs that included the French duo’s hit “Get Lucky.”

The selection committee passed over the two Hip Hop artists up for Album of the Year with Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories claiming the honors.

Performers at the awards show included Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who appeared alongside Queen Latifah and Madonna. The duo’s performance included a ceremony in which 33 couples were married. Kendrick Lamar also performed alongside the Las Vegas Rock band Imagine Dragons

    (January 26)

UPDATE #2: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have been awarded three of the four Grammy awards within the Rap categories at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. The duo beat out Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, and Drake with their award for Best Rap Album. The Seattle artists also won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for their 2013 hit “Thrift Shop” which was also Billboard’s #1 song of the year. Their award as Best New Artist outside of the Rap categories brought their total tally to four awards.

Jay Z and Justin Timberlake’s video for another of their 2013 collaborations, “Suit & Tie,” was awarded the Grammy for Best Music Video. Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and Alicia Keys all won awards within R&B categories.

RELATED: Grammy Rap Committee Considered Not Having Macklemore & Ryan Lewis In Rap Categories

155 thoughts on “Jay Z And Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Among Grammy Award Winners

      1. this homophobia is why hip hop doesn’t get the recognition it should. the music is what matters not who they are and what they do. grow up.

    1. Macklemore is a class act. I think he writes hot hooks for his guest artists, but I don’t like his verses. H

He was spot on – KDot made a better rap album, but he (Macklemore) made a more impactful album.

      1. SQO, he is pop to the point that the academy almost decided not to put him in the hip hop category and the academy usually knows nothing about hip hop, funny these new fans are the same way.

      2. Macklemore’s album was not more impactful. I’ve seen like 500 top albums of the year lists for 2012 and I don’t even think I’ve ever seen the Heist on them. The SINGLES were more impactful but does anyone actually listen to the album tracks? I listen to Jimmy Iovine and that’s about it…

      3. Pop means popular. Most rappers wish they were as popular as him.

Drake was a pop artist last year when he won too.

If Nipsey Hussle, Jadakiss, Styles P, Talib Kweli, Big K.R.I.T, Kendrick Lamar and French Montana fuck with Macklemore and his music I’d say thats hip-hop.

      4. ” I’ve seen like 500 top albums of the year lists for 2012 and I don’t even think I’ve ever seen the Heist on them.”

        now you’re just lying

    2. Hip Hop is making mad money and the usual crooked bastards wont their face on it as well as control over the dollars it makes. Cant have the world looking favorably at the people we’ve spent so much time stealing ideas from and destroying the image of. Period.

      1. nah because it easily got the most acclaim and is actually seen as the best hip hop album of the year out of the nominees and had the most impact as an album.

    3. The Seattle hip-hop duo just won three straight awards: rap album for The Heist, rap performance for Thrift Shop and rap song, also for Thrift Shop. In the latter, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis not only beat Kanye Wests bracing New Slaves but also the feel-good tale of success Started From the Bottom from Drake.

The big loser, however, is local artist Kendrick Lamar. Grammy voters went with the more pop-leaning Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, an act that often delivers hip-hop as if it were arena rock, rather than the more hard-hitting street-life tales favored by Lamar.

    4. Macklemore should be a real nigga and cut his Grammy for best rap album in half and give Kendrick the other half.

    5. ps: it aint so much that black people dont want white or other races of people in Hip Hop that respect culture. Its the ones that take our shit and bless others with the very opportunities we looked to create for ourselves by being creative that leaves a bitter taste in our mouths. Many of you dont understand this and think we just “hating”.

If you didnt have shit and created something so you could and didnt mind someone learning what you did, you’d be mad as fuck to see someone pick up the guy that learned from you and shower his ass with opportunities while you continue to live the same bullshit. Just think how you’d feel if that shit happened to you several times smh.

      1. its no different than any other year.

whats the difference between macklemore winning over k.dot and drake winning last year over nas?

    6. Sry. Best new artist – sure, Macklemore . But best rap album?? White people keep winning for appropriating black music. I’m kinda glad Kendrick didn’t win because I like Drake also and didn’t want to hear all the Kendrick Stans using the win for more “Kendrick is better than Drake” BS but c’mon…Kendrick’s album was so much more innovative.

      1. “White people keep winning for appropriating black music.”

Maybe you guys should make your own negro award ceromony and see if anyone cares lololo

      2. firstly drake is trash. secondly, its not like they released a trap album talking about how they are from the hood. they did hip hop. rhyming over music, let’s get over this black and white thing. kendrick shouldve won

    7. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

KEEP COMPLAINING LIKE IT’S GONNA CHANGE SOMETHING

    8. Kanye: “Ay why I ain’t won no grammy award in a category that ain’t considered hip-hop or urban.” Maybe because your lyrics are littered with vulgar and derogative language. P.S. Kendrick Lamar looks like he’s about to cry at the awards every time they show his face and he loses. Throw him a bone for album of the year I’m starting to feel bad.

      1. Macklemore posted text messages between him and Kenny from earlier and it’s all love. they were congratulating each other on the big year.

      1. lol ok dude, that’s your opinion & i respect that but RAM got big acclaim last yr, 87 on metacritic and voted as 1 of the best albums of 2013.

      2. who said it was ever not my opinion. they have sold out like the black eyed peas have. getting more and more pop with every record they release.

      1. Tyga and DJ Khaled really got snubbed this year if you ask me. When are the Grammys gonna stop ignoring the classics.

    9. if it was all about skin color eminem wouldve won in 06 and beastie boys in 05. they go on popularity instead of what was the better album.

    10. This is mad disgraceful. Why the fuck is a pop rap album winning for a hip hop grammy. That album is NOT hip hop. No wonder why you have to go underground or listen to dudes from the 80’s and early 90’s. Shit is a joke right here.

      1. ^True. The grammys always been a bullshit popularity contest. Like Chuck D said back in the day “Who gives a fuck about a god damn grammy.” Hip hop heads know who should of won.

    11. im fucking fuming watching this shit!!! i swear to god if this nigga kendrick does not win album of the year im fucking done with the fucking grammys. cant believe they gave this faggit rap album of the year

      1. learn how to spell faggot, faggot. How is macklemore gay when youre the one running to a hip hop site literally mad and start whining about the grammys like a fucking woman. Shut the fuck up, no one cares.

    12. Someone in the celebrity community needs to just flat out admit the truth……The Grammys are RACIST!!! Macklamore gets best rap album? That is Bullshit! There is no way that is possible. They need to leak the criteria because this is not lining up. I think I’m truly done watching the Grammys After they fucked up Frank Ocean by giving him an Urban contemporary album! Dayum it’s truly time for a revolution!!!!

      1. I want to know how they decide the winners too. Macklemore himself said hip hop would be heated if he won best rap album. If niggas didnt hate him before, they hate him now. That grammy committee is fulla shit and everybody know it.

    13. Of course the grammys won’t give the same award to the same artist (Drake) 2 years in a row but can they at least give the award to a HIPHOP artist instead of a pop artist (Macklemore?) Even K Dot resembles a bit more hiphop (though still a pop artist).

      1. You honestly think Macklemore’s production shit is hiphop? Maybe R&B but hiphop? More pop than hiphop. And K Dot is pop in that he used cliched beats and talks about being a gangster.

      2. Macklemore is hip-hop, whether you like it or not. The production may be mainstream, but it’s hip-hop. Also, Kendrick is not pop. None of the beats he uses are cliched at all and he does not talk about being a gangster.

      3. If using cliche beats and talk about being a gangster is what makes you pop, then damn near every mainstream rapper are pop.

      4. I expect this answer from a gay fag. No straight person is going to compliment macklemore. Even white people prefer drake over macklemore.

      5. “I expect this answer from a gay fag. No straight person is going to compliment macklemore. Even white people prefer drake over macklemore.”

I expected this from a homophobe. What’s your problem with gay people? Plus, plenty of straight people complimented Macklemore.

    14. Its just the grammys bullshit always wins nothing new. Just goes to show you the power of a message. Yea alot of people (not really hip hop fans) liked thrift shop and even liked the lbum. Butwe know same love was the real reason why he so popular. R.a. the rugged was right macklemore May not be gay but he uses the gay rights shit as a strategy for sales. Call me homophobic, racist a bunch of childish names whatever its the truth. Homos heard same love found out mack put the heist out and its over. They could careless if the lbum was good or wack its got an anthem on for them. The World treats em bad so they bump same love to feel better.Sort of like bullied white kids and eminem songs. Kendricks lbum is dope not classic but nice as fuck. I like good kid but I liked section 80 better I could play every song. I didnt like poetic justice or swimming pools. Albums not classic if you cant let it ride. Not classic but dope enough to win a Grammy over macks average album.

    15. “I expected this from a homophobe. What’s your problem with gay people? Plus, plenty of straight people complimented Macklemore.”

What’s your problem with Drake? What’s grammy’s problem with drake? Drake brought hiphop back when it was dying and now people want to hate him for it. No one was picking for macklemore to win. Even he himself said that K Dot, though wack, should get the award.

      1. I didn’t say anything about Drake at all and your entire comment is all a lie. Drake didn’t bring hip-hop back, he made it more soft and poppish. Also, K-Dot’s not wack at all.

      2. All drake did was make hiphop more relatable. You know, get it out of the same old gangsta raps that dr dre was doing. If drake maybe be softer, at least he ain’t some woman beater like eminem is. Something about drake pissed off the grammys because they certainly didn’t want to give him the award.

      3. “All drake did was make hiphop more relatable. You know, get it out of the same old gangsta raps that dr dre was doing. If drake maybe be softer, at least he ain’t some woman beater like eminem is. Something about drake pissed off the grammys because they certainly didn’t want to give him the award.”

No, he didn’t. Drake just made it softer and more feminine (P.S. Eminem’s not a woman beater, that’s Chris Brown, who’s a woman beater). And Drake didn’t piss off the Grammys, they rightfully didn’t give him anything because he doesn’t deserve an award.

      4. Drake made it more relatable and more appealing to women. And yes, chris brown is a woman beater as well but eminem threatened to kill kim on the track kim. And drake lost because the grammys don’t want to award the same person twice. At the end though, Drake still sold more copies of NWTS than Gay Dot and Fagmore and ryan lewis. Drake went platinum in a month where as it took the other 2 almost a year to go platinum.

      5. No, Drake didn’t make it relatable at all, he made it more feminine. And what Eminem said on Kim is not meant to be taken seriously. And sales alone doesn’t make an album good; all sales say is that your album is mainstream-friendly. Quality-wise, Kendrick and Macklemore have the better albums. Plus, your reasoning for why the Grammys didn’t give Drake anything makes no sense since they always give awards to the same artists (Jay Z, for example).

      6. What’s wrong with making it feminine? We don’t need fantasy gangster raps all the time. Kim certainly took the lyrics seriously so eminem did inflict damage. Eminem’s mother hated him and sued him. Also, Macklemore and K Dot suck hard. Although K Dot does try to pass off as hiphop and failed where as macklemore’s pop but dick slurping idiots like you are saying its hiphop. Also, I said twice in a row. Drake will win another grammy with his 4th album. And Drake has the best album of the 3. Hell, take care winning shows that its better than that overrated life is good album from nas.

      7. You are wrong about everything. Making it feminine means making it look like a bitch. Kim and Eminem’s mom have issues. And, no. Kendrick and Macklemore don’t suck at all, that’s your boy, Drake. Kendrick IS hip-hop, he doesn’t have to try, he’s organic hip-hop. Macklemore is also hip-hop, just a more mainstream sub-genre. Drake is not gonna win another Grammy at all. His album is not better than GKMC and The Heist. And, no. Take Care winning an award doesn’t make it better than LIG, only pop music fans think that. LIG is clearly better.

      8. Making it feminine does not meaning making it look like a bitch. That would be doing songs promoting fagness and gay marriages. Like I said, only gay fags like you would find macklemore appealing. You are contributing to the death of hiphop.

      9. Actually, making it feminine DOES make it look like a bitch. Doing one song that’s about same-sex marriage is not. Many people find Macklemore appealing. If anyone’s contributing to hip-hop’s death, it’s you for supporting shitty music.

      10. What’s wrong with gay marriage, homophobe? Two men getting married doesn’t affect anyone but those two. You probably have insecurity issues for having a problem with other people’s lifestyles.

    16. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis now has more Grammys than DMX, Nas, and Snoop Dogg… COMBINED.

      FUCK THE GRAMMYS

    17. I would have preferred to see Kendrick take home the award for best rap album as I feel that GKMC is a fantastic story where as Heist is more of a collection of good tracks with some different themes than usual but I congraulate macklemore.

      1. No dont congraulate this shit. Everybody in the hip hop world knows that was Kendrick’s award and he got robbed. Another year, another grammy upset. True heads never took the grammys serious. And shit like this is why the grammys keep losing creditably year after year.

    18. “We don’t need fantasy gangster raps all the time.”

The irony of this comment coming from someone who defends Rick Ross. LOL.

      1. Rick ross is a terrific rapper. At the same time, do I need to eat pizza everyday? No and drake is there to make hiphop relatable. He can be soft for the ladies.

      2. Ross is not a terrific rapper, he’s a terrible one. And, no. Drake is there to make hip-hop more bitchmade. He’s not hip-hop.

    19. This event is a predominantly white academy voting for predominantly white artists. Check the numbers on who watched this event and you’ll see that it is reflected in the audience.

Don’t be mad that the best rap album/artist award was given to clowns that don’t represent the genre. This event should be boycotted by all rap artists. Forget trying to achieve the white man’s recognition. It’s not necessary.

Go watch 12 years a slave.

      1. ^HaHa. Im rolling with the truth on this one. I been boycotting the grammys a lil minute now every since ’99 when they gave Em that award over the roots. They been constantly doing this popularity contest that shits on the realness.

    20. The problem with America lies within these comments. Everyone is getting mad & talking shit about the nominated artists. They were nominated. They weren’t the ones voting.

Get mad at the record labels, radio stations, academy that votes, music politics, etc.

To be honest I highly doubt if 95% of the people in these comments have a high school education & chances are will be living off the system to get by. But just my opinion there.

      1. be coherent with your response. It doesn’t have anything to do with the grammy’s. He was just nicely stating that 95% of the people commenting on this are dumbasses who ultimately will end up living on handouts. you sir, seem to be proving his point.

    21. The fact that Macklemore has more Grammys than Nas bugs the hell outta me. I mean, Nas is a legend, one of the greatest to rep hip hop and someone who is passionate about the craft and yet somehow, the labels/academy/system honors popularity over quality.

      1. thats why the Grammys shouldnt mean shit.

Drake has more Grammys than Nas. Will Smith has more Grammys than Nas. Puff Daddy has more Grammys than Nas and Wu-Tang

      2. Makes sense, but it would be nice to see Nas, the Wu, Rakim, and all the legends get recognized for their work.

    22. Kendrick’s still young and fresh. He’s got plenty of opportunities to win a Grammy. Even if he doesn’t, he don’t have to. A lot of great artists never won Grammys. As long as Kendrick puts out quality material that sells well, he’ll be fine.

    23. The music is being infiltrated by white people. Yet another piece of history stolen and soon to be destroyed by the white man.

In the next few years the only artists to be putting out ‘commercial’ and ‘award worhty’ music will be the white artists. Gone will be the 2pacs and Nas’ of truth, survival, passion and profound introspect…Replaced with the modern day Macklemore’s and Justin Biebers (apparently he qualifies as a rapper according to 2014 standards – another example of my statement) which will fuel ‘hiphop’ with the monotonous issues of the suburbs, first world problems (a day without internet), and the effective death of the hiphop genre.

The only solution is for real hiphop to wake up and fight back…before it’s too late. We need more Biggies, more Wu-Tangs, more DMXs, more NWAs, more Trick Daddys, more Big Puns, more JayZs.

      1. I totally agree with you bro, they don’t like the ear the truth, but hip hop is been reshape and commercialized, again another black art that has been stolen, just like Elvis stealing the style and becoming a “king” i feel like when a black man does its its normal, but when the white man does the exact same thing,it become something new and amazing…look at that trump called milley Cyrus with twerking!! people are going wild on it like she invented, i don’t care if white people say ho its always about race with us,they don’t see it because they are not in our skin…period! listen to my radio show on sheffieldlive.org pure underground hiphop i need peoples support every Tuesdays at 9pm (England) time peace!

    24. Let’s be real. The Grammy’s gave the “best rap album” to a album that no real rap listener would put in the top ten this year. The Grammy’s are for people that don’t like rap, but have to give “something” an award because there’s a category. They gave it to the next wedding song that 64 year old uncle Fred might feel safe dancing to after “baby got back” & “Gangnam Style” are done playing. Hell, it’s on CBS… their demo is retired, white people that don’t own a CD player, let alone a mp3 player.

      1. First off your comment was invalid when i saw “real rap listener.” Hip-Hop is an art not a color. What other hip hop artist/song had such a breakout success as Macklemore in 2013. Admit it, one minute no one has heard of this guy the next he’s a legend in many peoples eyes. I think another big part of him winning was him being a huge part of incorporating a stance on gay marriage in hip hop and pushing it. What makes him not hip hop? that he uses vocals? he doesn’t just talk in a “real hard nigga” voice. Personally i don’t really care for macklemore but i didn’t care for any other nominees either.

    25. To everyone saying this is racist, do you realize that the best solo country performance went to a black person? they are really judging this on race huh? I think popularity has a little more to do with this than race. you all can go back to rim jobbing jesse jackson and al sharpton now. you can talk about false racism claims and just being plain stupid in the process.

    26. This is another 50 Cent situation all over again. Those who deserved it the most never win. Commercial music sells these days. Race might also have something to do with it. Put Kendrick in Mack’s position rapping about Thrift Shopping and that record “same love”.. would he have sold as much ? Don’t think so. It’s a reality we try to escape but still exists in our societies.

      1. Do you know how many grammy Jay Z has one in his 17 year career.More than Eminem and won way more than Nas. Look it up dumb ass. Way more than Macklefag will ever dream of. Macklefag probaly wont even be relevant 2 years from now he is just the flaming pale cave fag of the moment.

      2. not hard to win more grammys than nas when you make pop rap. And eminem has put out half the material of jay and still has more best album wins.

    27. Macklemore has every legit reason to beat Kendrick Lamar at the grammys. The only reason anybody would think otherwise is cause they’re ignorant and shallow-minded.

      1. She didn’t remix shit and Ross didn’t make the song popular at all. The song was already big before he did a freestyle over it.

      2. There was a pause midway through the show where everyone stood up and applauded Ross for his contributions to life.

    28. I assume most people hating on Mack havent even listened to the whole album once, myself included. While I disagree that he shouldn’t have won best rap album I caught the tail end of their performance and they got a standing ovation, had people crying and shit….

      1. everyone says the grammys mean nothing but then they get mad when at their choice of winners every year for like a week then forget about it

    29. well who would of thought rap’s token white guy would do good at the grammys, sheesh its sad and im white Lol

    30. It is the nicest way to earn more and more money at home.$40h – $90h…how? part time or full time,I’ve been bringing in $82h It sounds unbelievable but you wont forgive yourself if you don’t check it out,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,www.Works6.com

    31. They forgot about one category: REALEST RAPPER OF THE YEAR: GUCCI MANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    32. The Grammy voting committee are middle aged white people, it might be an honor for an artists to receive a Grammy but having your music validated by white people truly means nothing.

      1. Exactly they feel comfortable with macklemore there for he gets the vote its pretty stupid and not legit at all.

    33. I’m not a fan of Macklemore but how exactly is he not hip-hop? Sure he’s popular and has a little more mainstream influences in his beats but at the end of the day he’s still a rapper. Not only that but he has a message and tries to bring about change and whether or not you agree with his message it’s there.

Public enemy had a message against the government. NWA about police brutality. Grandmaster Flash literally had a song called The Message that defines conscious rap. When Public Enemy was out some disagreed with their lyrics and that goes double for NWA. Whether you believe in gay rights or not you should still be proud a rapper with a message is popular. So many songs about bitches and bottles flood the radio so it’s a nice change.

Same goes for Kendrick he has some great messages. Both had good albums and personally I do think Kendrick should have won but to say Macklemore isn’t hip hop is extremely ignorant.

    34. uptil I looked at the check that said $5477 , I have faith …that…my neighbours mother could actualey bringing in money in there spare time from their laptop. . there sisters neighbour had bean doing this 4 only twenty one months and resantly took care of the mortgage on their villa and bought a great Acura . hop over to here… http://www.Fb39.Com

This and Queens of the stone age with trent rezor, dave grohl and the fleetwood mac girl

      1. Hush child. The Grammy’s are no different than the Oscars. It’s about results and Macklemore trumped Kendrick in every way possible.

      2. “Macklemore trumped Kendrick in every way possible.”

If you’re talking sales, hits, and appeal, then you’re correct.

    35. I Macklemore deserves that award. That dude got messages, positive messages in his songs. Kendrick, just can’t compare, his off the list!
