The 56th Annual Grammy Awards began this evening (January 26) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony kicked off with a performance from Jay Z and Beyonce. This year’s ceremony is hosted by LL Cool J for the third consecutive year.
Jay and Beyonce performed their collaborative hit “Drunk In Love“ to a crowd that included nominees Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Robin Thicke, and more.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won an early award for Best New Artist. While accepting the award, Macklemore celebrated the independent nature of their album The Heist. “We made this album without a record label, we made it independently, and we appreciate all the support,” he said.
Jay Z received the most nominations of any artist this year with his name up for nine awards, including within the of Best Rap Album category. Both Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, alongside Kanye West and Drake, are nominated for the same award.
Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are the only Hip Hop artists who were nominated within the coveted Album of the Year category this year, an award that has been given to Hip Hop artists only twice in the past in the cases of OutKast and Lauryn Hill. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were also the only Hip Hop artists nominated within the Song of the Year category for their chart-topper “Same Love.”
Earlier this week, rappers Joey Bada$$ and Nipsey Hussle weighed in on the Rap Album of the Year and Album of the Year categories. In an interview with MTV, Joey said that while he thinks Macklemore’s commercial appeal will win him the award, he thinks good kid, m.A.A.d. city deserves the nod. “That’s Grammys,” he said. “That’s what you got, but I personally feel like Kendrick deserves that more.” In an interview with XXL, Hussle said that he’s rooting for both nominees. “They both have their reasons to be recognized,” he said. “I’m curious to see how it goes. And they both from the West so I’m rooting for both of them.”
In an interview with The Source earlier this month, Macklemore himself admitted that he thinks the Best Rap Album award should be given to Kendrick Lamar. “In terms of [that category], I think it should go to Kendrick,” he said. “He’s family. TDE is family, and I understand why Hip-Hop would feel like Kendrick got robbed [if he didn’t win]. I’m not trying to compare albums; I think you can make an argument for both. With that being said, I am a huge supporter of what Kendrick does. And because of that, I would love to win in a different category. We obviously had massive success on commercial radio, and I think that, in ways, The Heist was a bigger album, but Kendrick has a better rap album.”
UPDATE: Jay Z and Justin Timberlake have been awarded a Grammy for their collaboration “Holy Grail.” The award was given within the Rap/Sung Collaboration category and Jay Z was also nominated for his collaboration with Beyonce. In his acceptance speech, Jay offered the award to his daughter Blue Ivy as a “gold sippy cup.”
Pharrell Williams was awarded a Grammy as Producer of the Year and appeared on stage alongside Daft Punk and Stevie Wonder to perform a medley of songs that included the French duo’s hit “Get Lucky.”
The selection committee passed over the two Hip Hop artists up for Album of the Year with Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories claiming the honors.
Performers at the awards show included Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who appeared alongside Queen Latifah and Madonna. The duo’s performance included a ceremony in which 33 couples were married. Kendrick Lamar also performed alongside the Las Vegas Rock band Imagine Dragons.

UPDATE #2: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have been awarded three of the four Grammy awards within the Rap categories at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. The duo beat out Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, and Drake with their award for Best Rap Album. The Seattle artists also won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for their 2013 hit “Thrift Shop” which was also Billboard’s #1 song of the year. Their award as Best New Artist outside of the Rap categories brought their total tally to four awards.
Jay Z and Justin Timberlake’s video for another of their 2013 collaborations, “Suit & Tie,” was awarded the Grammy for Best Music Video. Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and Alicia Keys all won awards within R&B categories.

Let’s be real. The Grammy’s gave the “best rap album” to a album that no real rap listener would put in the top ten this year. The Grammy’s are for people that don’t like rap, but have to give “something” an award because there’s a category.
