Janelle Monáe is reportedly joining the cast of Focus Features’ Harriet, a new biopic chronicling the life of Harriet Tubman.
According to Variety, the Grammy Award-nominated singer will star alongside the likes of Leslie Odom Jr, Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, Clarke Peters and Vanessa Bell Calloway. Actress Cynthia Erivo will star as the heroic abolitionist.
The upcoming movie is being directed by Kasi Lemmons and follows the activist on her escape from slavery and her subsequent efforts to help dozens more slaves achieve freedom.
Harriet, which is due to begin filming in Virginia later this month, will be Monaé’s latest film since starring in 2016’s Hidden Figures and Moonlight.
On the music front, Monáe recently released her third studio album, Dirty Computer back in April. [apple_news_ad type=”any”]
