Jadakiss believes that record labels should be held more accountable for the violent lyrics rappers constantly insert in their music.
During a recent episode of the I Am Athlete podcast, Kiss elaborated on his perspective of labels needing to bear the responsibility of lyrical content, specifically with drill music.
“Record labels are being successful off nonsense,” Kiss began. “Somebody went out, did something stupid, recorded a song about it and was able to get a lot of streams, and that became a thing with the whole drill scene. They actually going out, gettin’ active and doin’ stuff and then go into the studio and make a song about what they just did. That should get nipped in the bud as soon as it got created.”
“But nobody’s going to these labels saying they wrong for this,” Kiss continued. “We just blaming it on the kids. So, like my brother said, he don’t like to just put all the blame on these young artists because the radio stations are making them the top songs of the playlist. And the labels are still signing them.”
He added: “They even got it — they puttin’ out life insurance on these young kids now. Others were surprised at the revelation, but it’s been common for some time. The labels. ‘Cause they gamblin’ on you to do something dumb, so they can profit after you die. So, this is getting ridiculous.”

Jadakiss isn’t the only artist whose taken issue with the spread of drill music and its substantial impact on both artists and the music industry.
During a recent interview on the Jason Lee Show, Remy Ma called the genre overrated while insisting that she didn’t understand why the new sub-genre has gained so much traction recently.
“I don’t have an exact person but I feel like a lot of the drill is overrated,” the Bronx rapper said. “Like I don’t know what you’re saying, but that’s all anybody listens to. It’s not an artist’s thing, it’s a sound and I feel like that whole genre is super overrated.”
Additionally, Bobby Shmurda said in an August 2022 interview with YouTuber Bashword that he doesn’t want to be associated with drill music.
“Don’t ever try to put me in a category or in a box you gonna hurt your head,” Shmurda said. “I do what Yall haters cant #Nahimsaying. i don’t do drill. I won’t ever be A minion Rrrrr and they can’t clone me really one of a kind.”
In February 2022, New York City mayor Eric Adams held a press conference to discuss issues surrounding gun violence. During the press conference, Adams lamented on the damaging impact of drill music after Bronx drill rapper C-Hii Wvttz was killed while leaving a Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn recording studio.
I’m a fan of Kiss, but this is a stupid take. These labels know the type of music the artists are going to make. They come in with a demo. Am I missing something here? It’s not on the label for the lifestyle the artists they sign choose to lead. Maybe if the artists took seriously the contracts they sign; and the money that comes with it they would walk away from it with the success they have achieved. This is the same logic with the a gun bill that has been floated around where you can sue the gun manufacturer. Never mind the decision an individual made. Just more lack of accountability for someone else’s actions.
Label accepts the “decision” an individual made and profits off of it. They’re now culpable for spreading it wider than said individual ever could. Are you an idiot?
Naw Jewish companies need to be held responsible for the black lives their “artist” influence. Not everyone has the same resources and education and they take advantage and then play victim
The same way hate messages on social media sites are used against big tech owners when some bs pops off Kiss is saying these labels should do something to moderate the bs coming out of these artists. Only difference is the labels have an added incentive for letting the fire burn by cashing in on insurance policies. Plus part of your message lends more credence to Jada’s argument cuz you say they know who they signed when they got the demo. If the goal is to take advantage of the ignorance then it might be their objective to sign hyperviolent mediocre talent unless they start being held accountable for those knuckleheads. You made the argument for him
A lot of you are missing the point. It’s not that the artist makes songs about stupid decisions he made. That’s definitely on him. It’s the fact THEY’RE PAYING THEM MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO LOOK GREAT DOING IT, knowing the impact of this music on the culture.
This is fucking stupid. How is the label supposed to know if the story on the record is real or fictional like NWA records ? Thats solely on the rapper.
I read the comments, yea rappers rap the words but most record labels got someone telling the rappers what they want to hear in the rhymes. At the end of the day someone in the company listen to it and co-sign the release of the record so it on the companies..
Some moron listening to a three 6 mafia track then kills someone why bring it up
Always someone else’s responsibility. Rappers are so childish.
