J. Cole Compares “Cole World” To Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint,” Speaks On Production

    J. Cole is dropping his debut Cole World: The Sideline Story on September 27th, the culmination of years on the grind. During an interview with FlyTimesDaily.com, the Roc Nation rapper says the resulting product is worth the wait and that the album will most likely stand the test of time.

“Timeless. I feel like six months from now, one year from now, two, three years from now, it’ll give you the same feeling. It’s got a feeling, it’s got a sound to it,” he said. “Like The Blueprint. I’m not saying it sounds like Blueprint… I’m saying I can throw the album in at any time and I’ll know what it’s going to sound like and how it’s going to feel. Like it’s one of those. But only time can tell.”

He also spoke on his production on the LP, explaining that though he produced the majority of the tracks, he still had a hand in the others.

“Ten of the 13 on there. Even a couple of the ones that I didn’t produce, I had a hand in and co-produced,” he said. “So the intro, all the music changes is me on there. I didn’t do that beat but I did the switch-ups. I didn’t do that beat, but I did the switch-ups. So [like on “In the Morning” ] when Drake comes in or I come in, guitars and piano… I handled like 95 percent of the album production wise, which I’m super proud of, of course.”

THIS is the rap game. If your sleeping on any of these cats, put a dick in ya ear and fuck what you heard

      1. I like your list. I would put my list in this order though. (Keep in mind this is only a temporary ranking based on how I feel and what I’m listening to now – list subject to change at any moment, although the top spot has remained firm for quite a while)

        1. Crooked I – The Current GOAT, IMO
        2. Kendrick Lamar – Section .80 + O.D. = #2
        3. Jon Connor – Blue City Club! You Know!!!
        4. Tech N9ne – Best verse on Carter IV. LOL
        5. Chamillionaire – The Mixtape Messiah
        6. J. Cole – I dont even give a fuck bout J
        7. Big K.R.I.T. – King Remembered in Time
        8. Royce Da 5’9 – Slaughters Em on own shit
        9. Game – Not deep but still bangs. RED.
        10. Jay Rock – I followed him home. Dope.

        Honorable Mentions:
Elzhi, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Eminem, Lupe, Freddie Gibbs, Horse Shoe G.A.N.G., more that I forgot.

      2. I agree with tech and crooked I being on a top ten list. I don’t understand the hype with kendrick Lamar at all. I listened too section 80 and found it on a whole completely average.

      3. I have to tell you , Kendrick Lamar came out of nowhere. I had never listened to O.D. (Overly Dedicated) but I copped Section .80 almost immediately. Then it just kind of sat there while I listened to a few other things, embarrassingly enough Tha Carter IV among them.

Then I was cleaning one day and did something I don’t usually do if I’m right in front of the player. I listened to the album completely, without skipping. Within 3 days I had gotten O.D. and done the same thing.

The beauty of this guy is his originality. Some of the songs have beats that may make you want to skip thru, but his wordplay is fantastically unique. You have to take some time to get an ear for him. Then you might gain an appreciation the repetative style he uses. Overall his subject matter is kind of refreshing in a world full of copycats. “I tella nigga all those flows are borrowed, it’s the pharohe, 3 stacks”

I imagine that if you don’t get it, you just don’t get it, but he’s so unorthodox it takes a minute to get what he’s sayin, since its not the same as 90% of everybody else. Then you either feel it or not. That’s just me.

I had a feelin ever since I heard Dr. Dre endorsed him, that he would be the new torchbearer. Meaning like Snoop was for The Chronic and like Em was for 2001, Kendrick will be for Detox. And whether you’re tired of hearin bout Detox yet or not, the reason I know it’s finally coming (no wild fanboy optimism here, OK?!) is that the man Lamar is the Catalyst that Dre (and most likely the rest of us) has been waiting for. This will likely be the factor that propels him to mainstream success and acceptance by a majority rather than a minority of fans.

Of course this is all speculation, but I’m fairly sure I’m right (and admittedly a little big-headed) I also wonder what would have become of J Cole if Jay had put him on a large portion of Watch the Throne (I’m sure a lot of people might agree with me it could only have made it better) rather than see how he’ll do alone with Cole World. Not to toot my own horn, but I also suspected he would go with mostly his own production on his solo (10 out of 13 songs reportedly, with 95% hands-on with everything) but thats a little off track.

You should check out a few hours of uninterupted listening to determine your own favorites, if any. Keisha’s Song & No Make-up both stand out for me, and while Ronald Reagan Era and Hol’ Up initially sounded a bit funny to me, they are now album standouts. But really I’ve come to enjoy Fuck Your Ethnicity, ADHD, Rigamortus, Blow My High and Poe Mans Dreams almost as much. Hiii-Power is probably the best song on the album imo, by the way, and that’s just one album. O.D. is just as good in it’s own way with the I Do This Remix, Barbed Wire and Michael Jordan tracks being standout favorites.

Not gonna go any further, but for kicks you should listen to his Monster freestyle once or twice. That’s probably the most impressive off the dome I’ve heard in a while…..

      4. i really didnt like section.80 until the actual concept of the album hit me, and then i just really fell in love with what he put together

      1. LOLOLOLOL good joke. now go back to your hole. Sept 27 is all Cole. I put the house on it!!!!!!!!

      2. If anyone should push his album back it should be Phonte. Cause Cole gon sell records, Phonte won’t.

And oh yeah, Phonte >>>>>>>>>> Cole

    2. I dont trust you, young, corny rapper. I wont be buying your album. Its a trap! Its hip pop! Theyve been trying to get a pop artist over on us for years. Remember when word was Drake had skills? Remember what happened. I dont trust this corny young rappity rap ass rapper.

      1. The fact that you referred to J. Cole as a “young” rapper TWICE means you are damn near 40. Shit yo ol’ ass up nigga, lol

      2. haha i know right i remember when drake was considered the next best thing i did like his debut album though, for like two weeks cuz that shit was average

    3. cole fucked up, the blueprint wasnt a classic, the Source said it was a classic, to be honest, the blueprint 2 was better. so was in my lifetime vol 1,2 and 3. just drop the album nigga, we’ll see……

      1. blueprint is my 2nd favorite jay album…reasonable doubt->Blueprint——————————————————————->black album———————————————————————————————————————————————->Rest

    4. Tongue Jay’s ass more you no-talent douche.

If Jay himself said it I wouldn’t believe it (and don’t think any fucking “Blueprint” is all that) but at least you’d have some DIGNITY, instead of looking like a field nigga trying to move up to the Big House.

Jays Cole + Electronica = the future of NOTHING except Jay’s ball washers.

    5. Over the last month or so Cole been huggin’ Jay’s nuts lately. The last couple years he’d mention Jay here and there, but now the album bout to drop and it’s Jay this, Jay that. Stop promoting Jay and promote yourself.

    6. idk about this album being a classic anymore…it had all the potential to be but after mr. nice watch i was just thrown all the way off. i’m a huge cole fan and i tried to listen to it over and over but i still didnt like it. lost ones and lights please are the best songs i heard from it. cant get enough and work out are dope too, as well as cheer up but mr. nice watch is kinda lame to me. the rest has to be spotless. i dont think he can top friday night lights.

      1. Kendrick Lamar is OVERRATED?? First off, you have to be popular to be overrated and I don’t know too many niggas bumpin’ Kendrick’s shit. J. Cole and Kendrick are for the fans who want something a little deeper than cars, money, clothes, bricks and hoes.

    7. IF YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF OPINION ON J COLE MUSIC COMES FROM SONGS LIKE WORK OUT OR MR NICE WATCH THEN YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT IN TERMS OF COLE AND HIS TALENT. DO SOME RESEARCH. DUDES GONNA BE AROUND FOR A LONGGG TIME, GET USED TO IT.

      1. because people like u have never heard of them… to alleviate this problem u create a mainstream audience with singles like work out, with the goal being hopefully bad music fans like u can understand real hip hop. if u have any doubts on cole and ur a real music fan listen to lost ones

      1. lol you respect someone for being on twitter?

twitter didnt make j.cole who he is, jay-z did, why do you think every other day he on this website saying jay-z this, jay-z that,

      2. u people are so retarded. hes quoting a cole line “get off of twitter, u can be somebody”… and as far as the on hovas nuts bullshit, the dude has been signed by the roc for 2 years and has made two songs with jay z. jay z literally does nothing for j cole. j cole produces all his own stuff and created a fan base without any help from jay z. (UNLIKE DRAKE)

      3. he talks about him to pay respect for the opportunity, its called loyalty, and he looks up to Jay dumb ass,. how many people wanna be jay’s butler?? u dont think cole doesnt realize how privilaged he is to be where he is and to learn what he can from Jay,, your such a hater,.

    8. if its got that blueprint feel then its a classic blueprint is my fav album of all time the freshest shit ever never gets old better than illmatic and resonable doubt

    9. THAT JOE6PACK FAGGOT COMMENTS ON EVERY POST WHAT A FUCKING LOSER FAGGOT THAT GUY IS OMG FAG QUEER HOMO ASS LICKER SHIT PUSHER BALL JUGGLER

    10. A comparison to blueprint?!! wow…guess all we got to do is wait…I have only heard like 3-4 songs off the album so far and it seems like a basic album..but we’ll see

    11. ! minuteya’ll lovin cole,. then the same peeps sayign hes wack , like come on ,. the dude is sick,. hes developed as an artist , ya’ll want him to paint the same picture over and over again ,. ?? get real, .dude is giving us his heart and soul in many different ways, Doesnt take much to get behind a keyboard and bash a dudes hard work ,. try doing what hes done.None of ya’ll could.

      1. NOBODY loved this douche it was all marketing– dude has done nothing, just like Jay Electronica has done NOTHING.

But hey, maybe both these assholes with be on “Detox” featuring more dogshit rhymes ghosted by Jay-Z!

      2. Do you know NYC/BROOKLYN?

But seriously, if Cole’s done nothing, then how come he’s releasing an album in a week? Can you riddle me that?

      3. is that dude on drugs? marketing and j.cole dont even exist together which is the biggest problem with this album. nearly 0 push from anyone at the label

Not with that wack ass song with Jay-Z (Mr Nice Watch) on it. And the Blueprint Jigga ended quite some time now.

I’ve consistently said this dude is overrated. He’s yet to prove me wrong. Now, he’s damn near a puppet and being led astray.

Just give me an album worth a damn and please remove Mr Nice Watch from that album. Shit’s garbage, B.

      1. I’ve liked Cole since the come up. I think he’s shown signs of his skills. I hope the album is dope. The track with Jayz is kinda wack. I was hoping Temptations with Kendrick Lamar would be on the album but I don’t think so, those are the kind of joints that should be on his debut. I don’t anticipate the album being timeless but it should have some dope shit on it that will stay on my ipod, but probably not the whole album.

      1. Can we hear the album first before we’re so quick to judge. I’m not sayin it will be classic material, but just hear it first is all.

      1. Aye Yeezy, why didn’t you help a brotha out and produce some tracks for J.Cole? Dude actually thinks he’s ‘nice’ at making beats, smh

      2. Kendrick Lamars HiiiPower beat was ridiculous and also Temptations + many others from the Warmup. Cole can make some hot beats. Not all of them but he mos def comes with some heat. Some of Ye’s beats suck, you act like all his beats are off the rack. Most dope producers make and put out some shitty beats from time to time.

      1. @Hugh G. Rection

you’re so clever, Huge Erection, lol, I get it, I really do.

Dixie Normous, get it, I can play too, maybe the others won’t notice, and they’ll read it out loud in like church or something. Wouldn’t that be hilarious? Wow is this what it feels like being a loser? I kinda like it.

    13. Seems like everytime dis guy is asked for an Interview Da name Jay-Z manages to come out his mouth smfh.Hes becoming da biggest dick muncher

    14. I’ma let you ignorant people know who really belongs to the top 10 best rappers dead or alive (no order):

Soulja Boy (whenever he rhymes, he goes superman, YOOOU)
Birdman (hunin’ million dollars, nuff said)
Lil’ B (let’s face it, the only reason why Lil’ B isn’t top 10 in every list, it’s because he’s gay, but he is one of the legends)
OJ Da Juiceman (he is a lyrical monster, OKAY?)
Wacka Flocka Flame (the way he nods his head? Damn he a beast)
Gucci Mane (will be forever known as the rapper with the best wordplay, BURR)
Gudda Gudda (everyone knows that weezy ain’t shit if he don’t write his lyrics, “Gudda Gudda, I put her under”)
Fat Joe (unforgettable words, CAUCA, CRACK, he isn’t fat, he’s just full of talent)
Bizzare (just like Gudda Gudda, he ghostwrites for Eminem, and he also is full of greatness)
Diddy (name one rapper who can dance like Diddy, you just can’t)

Now, each of you understand why me, Hip Hop Expert, tells you that this rappers should be in the top 10 best rappers of all time, cause I’m the expert, not you.

      1. “Watch the thrown” is an 8, I disliked 2 songs, “Lift off” so so gay with Kanye’s hum-singing and barely any Jay Z. “Made in America” that was on some Hoetry, “Sweet baby Jesus we made it in America?” wtf lmao GAY!

The intro was PHENOMENAL: Human beings to the mob, whats a mob to a king, whats a king to a God, whats a God to a nonbeliever who don’t believe in any thing??” brilliant..

Outro as well, I wish they would have went more towards “No church in the wild” and “Murder to excellence” vibe, the cd is just for fun and flex I guess. Its about Power and who really holds it best example “Murder to excellence”; “No Church in the Wild”.

Its good for the clubs and its a mainstream cd I can vibe to without looking like a fag and feeling left out, cause I’m listening for a Lupe song. (Go go gagdet flow)

    15. Timeless my ass that shit isn’t timeless we already heard almost half the songs thats on there and they are average at best. Turn off the lights was a dope cut but that song is old as fuck. He is crazy to compare his album to that of Blueprint. I haven’t heard one song from J. cole yet that is touching anyone of the joints on Blueprint. Jigga that nigga and Girls Girls Girls are even better then in the morning and work out. And lets not even compare Mr. Nice Watch to Renegade you can just forget about THAT! Only time will tell but its not looking good.

    16. I really wish rappers would STOP comparing there work to classic albums. That is the least humble thing an artist can do…in any capacity. Classic albums come about by hard work, passion for the art, and pure chance. I think rappers are the only ones that do this on a constant basis, trying to add hype to there project instead of letting there shit stand on its own….its fucking sickening.

    17. I see there’s alot of hating goin on, but yall know what, go and check out rise and shine snippet, go and check out God’s gift live performance by j.cole on stage. We know lights please and lost ones is nasty. Also there was only like 4 tracks we heard off the album so yall gotta chill and relax and be patient.

    18. anybody can sound great in a professional studio with great production………..basic one two three rhymes and a fukin repetitive beat, i give respect to the musicians who actually play live music…..

      1. So you have determined an album is a classic after listening to it twice.

Even with the weak ass singles.

Ok Buddy. Why don’t you post the power ball numbers for this week since you can tell the future.

      2. I wouldn’t say it’s a classic but it one of the better albums to have come out in a long time.A couple songs could of been cut like the Mr.Nice Watch ,he should of put Jay on one of the deeper tracks.

    19. So he’s comparing his album to the blueprint.

So in other words the album is way overrated and will only be considered a classic by his biggest fans.

Since I never heard a classic Jay Z album and I don’t hear anyone still banging old Jay Z music.

Nas. Pac. I still hear people banging their old stuff.

      Jay. Never.

      1. 01: By your logic, the only reason Pac & Nas’ albums are classics is because THEIR “biggest fans” say it is.

Great music CREATES big fans / loyal fans; not vice versa.

And I’m saying that as a guy who considers The Blueprint a classic, but still prefers Pac & Nas as a matter of personal taste.

02: You only hear people bangin’ the old stuff of Pac & Nas? Then you need to get out of state more. There’s plenty of people still bumpin’ old school Jay, Biggie, ATCQ, KRS-One, Rakim, etc.

03: Does J. Cole have a classic in his hands? Maybe. I won’t know for sure till I give the album a few listens. And you know what? NEITHER WILL YOU. So quit talking like you speak for “real hip-hop.” Unless you’ve seriously tested his album, all your judgments are nothing more than premature & self-righteous.

04: For a self-proclaimed Pac fan, I would think YOU’D notice just how much Cole’s style is heavily influenced by him. The emotive storytelling, vulnerable lyrics mixed with brash street bravado.

Instead, you remain the exact OPPOSITE of what any true ‘Pac fan would be: “Anonymous.”

      2. I was just listening to The Blueprint a few months ago when I found it in my sisters room. Its decent I like “Heart of the city” , Takeover, and “Girls” that had some well crafted lyrics.

    20. Geniuses,

He DID NOT compare his album to the Blueprint, he says he wants it to have a timeless sound [and feeling you get] “Like the Blueprint.” Which is something I would wish all artist would want.

“Like The Blueprint. I’m not saying it sounds like Blueprint… I’m saying I can throw the album in at any time and I’ll know what it’s going to sound like and how it’s going to feel. Like it’s one of those. But only time can tell.”

Read before you write, this title is misleading.

    21. all these rappers gotta call there new album about to drop classic . that word classic is overused . any fan or artist can call there music classic nowadays . but what does classic really mean ?

    22. It’s a shame J Cole didn’t let other producers help him on this album.I have heard it and in no way does it inspire a classic feeling.I respect the fact that he tries to be a complete artist but his production is seriously lacking. And even if he wasn’t comparing it to the blueprint sound wise, just mentioning that comparison is blasphemy.Sonically Cole bores me but he is a great lyricist and I hope his econd album is way better

    23. J.Cole is the man. When talking about a classic…ummm idk. But one thing for sure is that 10 years from now, choosing from all the other kids around his debut album is the only one that is going to be debated. And remember this is a new error in which the word “classic” has to be re-defined. Jay’s Blueprint is a definate classic to most simply because to hear it in its entirely at a decent quality you had to buy the cd. There was no internet to steal from it and that was the time when mainstream was beginning to take serious note of the influence of hip-hop on modern youths. J.Cole has a voice and an appeal of maturity that most the kids leaving comments on here has no ability to comprehend.

Personally I think the album stood up to the hype but is it his best work?

      Helll Noooo!!!!

      Kid is Niceeee(Fab voice)…lol
