J. Cole has flipped a classic Dr. Dre song for the Dreamville-curated soundtrack for Creed III.

Released on Friday (March 3), the North Carolina rapper’s latest track “Adonis Interlude (The Montage)” samples Dre’s “The Watcher” beat from his 2001 album.

Cole also puts his spin on the opening line of the original (“Things just ain’t the same for gangstas”), rapping: “Things ain’t the same for young Jermaine.”

On the song, J. Cole references the rumored title of his upcoming album, The Fall Off, hinting that the project could be his last.

Just cop ‘The Fall Off’ and he’ll explain/ Is it the end of the chapter? Happily ever after?/ Bet this gon’ be the year that fulfill his reign, man,” he raps.

Creed III: The Soundtrack dropped on Dreamville/Interscope Records on Friday. In addition to J. Cole, the 18-track project includes contributions from fellow Dreamville members J.I.D, EarthGang, Ari Lennox, Bas, Lute, Cozz and Omen.

Other appearances come from Big Sean, Kehlani, EST Gee, Syd, Tierra Whack, REASON, Symba, Blxst, Westside Boogie, Buddy, SiR, Morray, BJ The Chicago Kid, Mereba, Black Sherif and more.

The album follows the release of Dreamville’s D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape, which dropped in March 2022 and was hosted by DJ Drama.

Before that, their platinum-certified Revenge of the Dreamers III compilation arrived in 2019 and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards.

Although J. Cole only makes one appearance on the Creed III soundtrack, he collaborated with BTS member J-Hope on a new song called “On the Street,” which was also released on Friday.

Cole spits a guest verse on the bilingual, boom bap-inspired track and also stars in the music video, which was filmed in New York City and directed by Yong Seok Choi.

Creed III — starring Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and Jonathan Majors — hit theaters on Friday, marking Jordan’s directorial debut. Before Dreamville, Mike WiLL Made-It previously executive produced the soundtrack for Creed II.
