Is J. Cole Dissing Lil Pump On “1985”? Twitter Thinks So

    J. Cole released his highly anticipated fifth studio album KOD on Friday (April 20), and fans online are already singling out the LP’s closing track — “1985 (Intro to ‘The Fall Off’)” — for its subliminal shots.

While the song serves as a lecture of sorts for today’s new generation of so-called “mumble rappers,” many fans and commentators believe Cole is calling out one artist in particular: Lil Pump, though he doesn’t mention anyone explicitly.

“I heard one of em diss me, I’m surprised/ I ain’t trippin, listen good to my reply/ Come here lil man, let me talk with ya/ See if I can paint for you the larger picture,” Cole raps, before breaking down his intended target.

Back in April of 2017, Lil Pump teased a song titled “Fuck J. Cole” via social media. The cut — produced by fellow Florida rapper Smokepurpp — features a whole bunch of “bitch-ass” and “ugly-ass” insults toward the Dreamville Records bossman, though Purpp later explained they were just trolling.

Check out what fans had to say about Cole’s “1985 (Intro to ‘The Fall Off’)” below.

This isn’t the first time Cole has taken a swipe at today’s new generation of rappers on wax. Back in late 2016, the North Carolina native released the diss-heavy cut, “Everybody Dies.”

“Bunch of words and ain’t sayin’ shit, I hate these rappers/ Especially the amateur eight week rappers/ Lil whatever – just another short bus rapper,” Cole spits.

    1. haven’t heard it yet bit big krit mt olympus tucked all the mumblers, dr suess & drake in a few years back just saying

        1. Lmfao @RealTalk is right though regardless…. or for this instance in particular at least. There was really no blatent way to categorize this as a straight diss track. You don’t offer real-life advice on a diss track. It was just Cole’s turn to express himself (which is what rap is for -since it’s the greatest form of musical poetry or like I like to call it “liquid poetry” lmao not sure if that’s even a term but that how I look at real rap. @RealTalk is 100% right on this thread at least because if you have actually listened to the song and you still think this is a straight diss track then maybe you need to fucking listen harder and ACTUALLY pay attention to the damn lyrics. It’s not like it’s “mumble rap” dude but if you need the actual lyrics to understand then use them so that you can actually understand wtf you just said in reply to a extremely valid comment. That’s why people say when you don’t know what you’re talking about, stfu and listen to the song a million more time before you publish comment slamming someone who actually knows the difference between a diss and advice. Unless you’re really just that ignorant and just like invalidating not just an opinion but an actual fact? So maybe that’s it 🙂 and maybe you should get your shit straight before you post in another public forum pertaining to hip hop/rap music because obviously you arent are knowledgeable as you seem to think you are asswhipe. But just to quote this all back to you love- Do YOU write the same fucking dumb-ass comment on every article? I hope not honey. Get cultured and then come back and see us. Maybe then you may have actually listened to the entire song by then too. I promise it won’t strain that little brain of yours, but you can never be too sure with that tunnel vision you got going on. -xx

    2. This is lame Lil pump is 100% GARBAGE to have a artist a real artist like J Cole mention his name would be a win for this clown sad how HHDX is even pushing this mess

      1. He NEVER actually mentioned lil pump in 1985 (as someone commented above he’s speaking to this “rising” generation that is just rapping about whatever is “hip”, and right now, that’s mumble rap and whatever you would call some of the other subgenes of some of these “rappers” since they aren’t all mumble rappers) the only reason ppl think it’s directed towards Pump is because apparently pump has been speaking shit on cole for a while now whether it was trolling or not. Cole is literally just warning them that trends can DIE REAL FAST and with the pointless BS these new rappers are talking about don’t even apply to their REAL (not stage) life. Therefore you become absolutely irrelevant quicker than you thought to be possible because they got lucky and got the big break while in reality there’s millions of people rapping about the same shit on fucking SoundCloud. And to be quite honest all these new artists (basically every XXL 2018) got lucky-they are nearly all interchangeable imo. They could cover eachothers songs and it wouldn’t sound like a cover because they all rap about the SAME SHIT. Whether it’s mumble rap or the words can actually be made out, the lyrics only differ in the slightest. They bring nothing to the table. So Cole’s warning them to step it up fast before the trend fades and they have to start over completely and rebuild their image AFTER they’ve already died out. But I’m afraid that Lil Pump may already have the heaviest head start to the bottom if he wants to keep talking to these artist that have been around longer than half these kids lifespan. This kids need to lear how to respect their goddamn elders!!!

    3. ’85 is a diss track that can be aimed at a whole plethora of MC’s…that is, if they can actually even be considered one. Cole’s brilliance is leaving that up to the listener to decipher. I think it’s comical that cats actually believe that a giant like Cole would even concern himself with some nobody (Lil’ Penis Pump). It’s a slap in the face to any decent diss track to even consider this clown’s insults as a diss. As HoV put it…”A wise man once told me, don’t argue with fools. Cause’ people from a distance can’t tell who is who.”
