Shortly after news broke out about Hip Hop events possibly being banned in the wake of a stabbing following a Plies concert [click to read] at Harborside Convention Center in the rapper’s hometown, several friends and supporters vented against those in favor. On Monday, Fort Myers, Florida City Councilman Warren Wright, who has openly advocated restricting rap music and concerts at local venues, spoke before a group of people, recanting his previous comments made to the media about his disapproval.
Co-host of the morning Freakshow and radio personality of Florida’s 105.5 The Beat, Niki Stephens-Lynch, attended the city council meeting and told HipHopDX that Councilman Wright stated “I don’t see any way Hip Hop concerts could be banned from Harborside [Convention Center] unless a unilateral agreement was made to eradicate all concerts from the venue. I don’t feel anyone would like to see that happen.”
Citing HipHopDX‘s previous article regarding the events surrounding the Plies stabbing, Councilman Wright reasoned that “I [don’t] think hip hop [music] and its musicians are inherently bad… But I do feel it’s important to address security issues.”

During the city council meeting, the radio personality commented on the incident, clarifying that the stabbing which occurred after the rapper’s performance did not take place at the Harborside venue nor was the attacker a part of the “Hip Hop crowd”.
At the present time, it does not seem likely that Fort Myers politicians will further attempt to ban Hip Hop music, but instead enforce security at concerts and events.
