The Kidz In The Hall [click to read] joined Kid Sister [click to read], The Cool Kids, Lupe Fiasco [click to read] and Kanye West in a highly-publicized poll from Hip Hop blog Unkut.com on “Who Is The Biggest Hipster Rap Douchebag.” (The winner of the moment is “all of the above,” followed by The Cool Kids) The poll even was given mention in online newspaper The Chicago Reader, defending local acts.
Naledge and Double O responded to the poll and the overall sentiment in Hip Hop recently. At a video with Boston-based store UndergroundHipHop.com, Double O responded to the poll saying, “It’s like they tried to smack you on the front side, then tried to stick their thumb up your booty on the south side.” Naledge added, “They don’t even know us, it was just kinda, ‘We don’t like how they dress.’ Fuck it.” The group also reminded those interested that their debut, 2006’s School Was My Hustle [click to read] was released on Rawkus Records, and was never victim to such accusations as those plaguing some of the newer groups in Hip Hop. “We weren’t [labeled] hipsters then! How the fuck…I had Polo on back then, I had Gucci belts on back then,” Naledge defended. He used the inclusion of 808 drum beats and radio-friendly choruses as the one evolution that the group has followed.
Citing Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D., the group obliged to the polling. “I love all these other groups that you’re pairing me with. Pair me with Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco [and Kidz In The Hall]. That’s all it is.” Double O also blasted, “Fuck all this hipster shit, fuck all this other shit, we make great music!” The group did work with The Cool Kids on their remix to “Drivin’ Down The Block” [click to listen].
Lastly, asked about their own opinion on who is the “biggest douchebag” in Hip Hop, Double O stated one of his inspirations, Timbaland. Recounting a meeting in California years ago, the then-aspiring producer said that the platinum superstar was cold and reserved to one of his biggest fans.
