Talib Kweli ripped the University Of Utah regarding his payment for the Keynote Address the rapper delivered at the school’s Martin Luther King Celebration January 21, according to a document obtained by The Salt Lake Tribune.
The Brooklyn, New York rapper spoke at the university’s event and, according to the school’s Twitter account, his visit “was a highlight of MLK week.” He also reportedly spent more time than required with students.
But after Kweli left, U. Office for Equity and Diversity communications director Neelam Chand reportedly contacted the American Program Bureau (APB) and sent a message that the rapper was “consistently unapproachable and unavailable to interact with our event attendees.”
Given their being “hugely dissatisfied,” Chand asked for Kweli to refund $2,500 of the fee paid to him to appear.

On January 28, Kweli sent a three-page response to the accusations, which is below.
“[I]f there were any issues, they should have been addressed to me while I was at the school, not a week later with this bullshit letter,” Kweli wrote in part. “I expect to get paid in full. Today. Or I am going public with everything in this email. I will personally tag every student who tweeted that day, post on my [Facebook] and Twitter about how University of Utah is trying to rip me off. Fuck around if you want. This will not be pretty for the school.”
Later on January 28, Kweli said he had been paid and would be removing his tweets calling out the University.
“Got paid. Now deleting the tweets it took to get paid,” he wrote.
