Vince Staples appeared on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore where a panel spoke about presidential candidate Lindsey Graham. If elected, Graham would be an unmarried president, a rarity in American history.

“If you look at it, the way the government was set up and some of these systems,” Staples says, “the president being married was to make it more relatable to the way a household was build at the time period where this whole thing kinda first started.”

The 21-year-old rapper is also asked if his generation still wants to get married.

“Most of the people in my generation,” he says, “who wanna get married, aren’t allowed to get married to the people they wanna get married to.”

The other panelists and host Larry Wilmore question Staples credibility because of his age, but the rapper says he’s “been dating the same girl for a very long time.”

Comedian Mike Yard was part of the panel and says that Beyonce is responsible for the lower cultural value on marriage.

“I call it the Beyonce Effect,” Yard says. “Women are not looking for that fantasy anymore.”

He says the songstresses’ track “Single Ladies” and other references to being an independent woman have taken feminism to a new level.
