MC Lyte Discusses Iggy Azalea’s & Nicki Minaj’s Place In Hip Hop Culture

Days after Kendrick Lamar offered some encouraging words towards Iggy Azalea, MC Lyte continued the conversation by weighing in on the debate regarding the Australian-born rapper’s place in Rap.

Recently speaking with HelloBeautiful.com, the iconic female emcee denounced claims that Azalea shouldn’t be considered in the Hip Hop conversation and subsequently adds that everyone has something to contribute to the culture.

“What I think about her is that she is a fan of Hip Hop,” MC Lyte says. “I’ve heard her on a few interviews and I know who she is in terms of having traveled abroad since I was 17, 18 years old. And there are people of all colors that love Hip Hop. When she says that she is a lover of this culture, I believe her. Everyone has something to contribute. You either like it or you don’t but you can’t just say, ‘You can’t be here.’”

Elsewhere, MC Lyte discussed Young Money rapper Nicki Minaj, commending her business savvy outlook.

“I think Nicki [Minaj] is a great business woman and I think she came at the right time,” MC Lyte says. “Even guys from camps who had female emcees in their camps abandoned their female emcee to have Nicki on their tracks.”

“Would I ever do a record with Nicki?” she continues. “I don’t know. We’d have to agree upon our subject matter [laughs].”

    1. Just too bad black women from the south are not represented or played on radio… They only play nicki and the bad knock off Iggy… Lmao she such a bad version of a black chick why do black women pretend like they get real representation in the art.. All they get is dissed by everybody! White chick from Australian fake southern accent blows up played all the time.. Female rappers zero radio play at all… How do they ignore this and the only person who is bold enough to say anything is Azelia Banks… Black male rappers jump to defend Iggy lol its so weird.. Nobody asks why is no one else being played?? If you love female rapper so much from the south… How do you March or bring up discrimination of a mike brown but ignore racism and discrimination in your own industry with your own people and your own females?
How can anybody take rappers seriously when they don’t even acknowledge discrimination and sexism in their industry.., you know Necole Kidman does a great american accent maybe she can rap like a black woman from Harlen

      1. your comment is the exact reason why there is so much “hate” for her so don’t worry, many people see what’s going on. and if you read Lyte’s words closely, she called iggy a FAN (follower), nikki a businesswoman (leader) AND an emcee, which the THE most important part!

    2. anyone with skill should be able to climb, except i don’t think iggy has skill and i don’t know that she’s a fan. i think TI could probably find any random girl and get the same result. but if someone like iggy can climb so easily then that probably means there’s a huge market for female rappers with actual skill.

    3. yet lyte is the same peron just a few year ago that was criticizing the likes of gwen Stefani and fergie doing it must have a new album coming out
