A carrot-topped New England DJ-turntablist took first place Saturday in the DMC/Technics Regional competition for Chicagoland at Metro, while Northeastern Illinoisans won the two runner-up slots.

After delivering a 6-minute set that included backspins, scratching cutting, flairing, and working the wheels of steel under a leg and behind the back with twirls while standing on top of turntable covers secured with duct tape, Providence, R.I.’s Perseus won a DMC/Technics and the opportunity to represent Chicagoland at the national competition this summer in New York City. The winner of the national competition will represent the United States at the international competition Sept. 22-23 in London.

“It’s just great to get all this love from Chicago, especially for a person who’s not from here,” a slightly choked up Perseus said in a brief acceptance speech from Wrigleyville venue’s stage. Perseus and 1999 Chicagoland DMC/Technics Regional champ and southwest suburban Cicero, Ill. native Precyse are with the same DJ-turntablist crew, Turntable Technicians. Precyce is currently 2001 champ for the DMC/Technics Regional that was Jun. 1 in New York City.

Spryte won a choice of a Technics record case or headphones with second place, and Spyder won a Technics record bag with his third place finish. Both Chicagoland locals are with the North Shore-based Platter Pirates crew.
