Owners of the single release to The Notorious B.I.G.’s seminal 1994 hit “Juicy” know that the many versions of 12″ feature a Pete Rock remix. The legendary Mount Vernon, New York producer/emcee actually is said to have made the track’s original demo version—also containing the Mtume sample, which was later remixed by Diddy for the Ready To Die breakthrough single.
While Pete Rock never produced a song on either of Biggie’s two studio albums, he maintained a close friendship with the Brooklyn, New York icon. In an interview with “The Revival,” The Chocolate Boy Wonder, as he’s also known, describes making another 1994 track in B.I.G.’s presence.
Asked about “In The Flesh” from Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth’s sophomore full-length The Main Ingredient, the producer revealed, “I made that beat in front of [The Notorious B.I.G.], actually. Notorious came over; he was in my basement,” Pete remembered of his home pre-production studio. “He wanted to see how I made beats. I did not know that I would use that beat on [The Main Ingredient].” Remembering his demonstration mind-set, the onetime Elektra Records star recalls, “‘Let me take this George Benson record, let me take this piece of a drum, and put somethin’ together.’ I ended up puttin’ it on the Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth album. And he was right there when I made it. I love that story.”

When released, the song would feature InI’s Rob-O, along with P.R. affiliate Deda. The Main Ingredient was released less than a month after Big’s debut, Ready To Die.
