Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 3/24/2013

As projected, Justin Timberlake shattered the charts (and some sales expectations) with 20/20 Experience. The album sold nearly a million records in its first week, the highest achievement on the charts so far in 2013. What’s more, with reports that a sequel could be released by Thanksgiving, Justin may need a few tuxedos to go with his “Suit & Tie.”

On the Rap side of things, Canadian veterans Swollen Members also shook things up with the first new Hip Hop album to crack the charts in three weeks.

Justin Timberlake Has 20/20 Chart Experiences

Pop/R&B maintay Justin Timberlake and musical partner Timbaland did it again—six and a half years later. Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience is a critically-heralded album met with strong commercial reaction, moving just under 970,000 first-week units for RCA Records, a division of Justin’s longtime Sony home.

The HipHopDX review touted, “The 20/20 Experience should have a bite as equal as its bark. It doesn’t; but it’s still damn good.” The album features nine of the 10 original tracks going over five minutes, with dynamic vocals and production. In addition to Timbaland’s involvement throughout, JT enlisted Jay-Z on the album’s “Suit & Tie” single.

Swollen Members Drive A Beautiful Death Machine To The Charts

Veteran Vancouver, British Columbia trio Swollen Members delivered their tenth album to the masses last week. The Suburban Noize Records flagships of Madchild, Prevail and Rob The Viking sold nearly 3,000 first-week units of Beautiful Death Machine. This is the follow-up to 1997, released two years ago by the Juno Award winners.

The album features appearances by Army Of The Pharaohs/Demigodz’ Apathy, Esoteric and Celph Titled (“Colossal Beats”). Also featured are Heavy Metal Kingz’ Vinny Paz and Ill Bill, joined by La Coka Nostra’s Slaine (“Death To You”). In addition to a bulk of Rob The Viking production, C-Lane contributed extensively to the musical direction of the album.

    1. Justin Timberlake?? crist dx, if you think hes anything related to hiphop you need to hire new writers that actually know shit about the genre, let alone misspelling words in every fucking article..

      1. not happening

i saw they filmed that video like 2 months ago, how long does it really take to cut it up and throw it online?

    2. where GAMES #s at? hiphopdx u slipping, he sold 4k this week..anyway..congrats once again homie, no tour or second single yet….hiphop lives on..jesus piece

    3. kendrick is the greatest rapper of our generation and will go down in history as being on of the greatest of all time maybe even surpassing tupac and big

      1. K Dot is a great rapper but give it a few more albums before you decide whether K Dot is the greatest rapper ever.

      2. next album anon will say kendrick fell off because the numbers dipped and there’s a new wave in town

      3. if Kendrick did die today there would be a bunch of goofballs just waiting to call him the greatest.

    4. IT SAYS HIP-HOP SALES OF THE WEEK AND THEN DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH SAYS JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE? NOBODY GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THIS FAKE ASS ROBIN THICKE IN THE HIP-HOP COMMUNITY. FUCK OUTTA HERE

      1. U ILLITERATE BASTARD IT SAYS HIPHOP/RELATED & NOTABLES AT THE BOTTOM

    5. swollen is best album on that entire list. sad that real musicans get looked down upon to faggot as trend setting shit controled by labels buy more product that they talk bout feed the machine.

      1. It’s obvious you didn’t attend match class. At this rate? All Chief has to do is sell an average of 3k albums or less a week and he will be above 250k. Just thought I let you know, math wizz!!!

      2. no one does steady numbers like that for half a year. if hes selling under 4k a week now do you really think he can keep that up until december? no way. another week or two and he will be pushing 2k, then 1k, then 600, then nothing

      1. your reads sucks, far from good

oh wait i wouldnt know because even though you been posting that shit on evevery article for months i still haven’t went to your bum ass website

    6. Nice, I am friends with the guy that did the cover art for Swollen. Kids name is Chris Labrenz… talented MF.

    7. EVERYBODY GO OUT AND SUPPORT MY NIGGA GAME ALBUM GET IT BACK ON THE CHART. WE REAL BLOODZ UP IN DIS SU WOOO BIZNESS NICCA. YMCMBWS SUPPORT REAL BLOODZ NIGGA

      1. you must be 15 years old and not know who Timbaland is. You know…the guy that produced every song on his album?!!? One of the greatest producers in hiphop, boy.

    8. embarrassing numbers for hip hop. this is a hip hop site and the main topic is Justin Timberlake. Sad.

    9. Lil Wayne will sell 2 million this week. Eminem’s new album will sell 400k tops. Hell, even JT couldn’t do a million although Wayne did with Tha Carter 3. YMCMB MMG OVO STACKS ON DECK

    10. Just a thought: you every wonder why hip hop sales are going down? and ppl like Justin timberlake and taylor swift and no its not “all” because they’re white, its actually because look at this comments wall its starts there instead of supporting artist on here all hip hop fans do is cut them up!! they cut them up when they don’t sell!!! and they cut them up when they do!!, or if someone comes on here a supports their artist they get mad fun of or called nameds like dick riders, also morons on here don’t buy anything but feel they have the right to judge?? I don’t thinks so IMO, I actually do buy albums of artist I support so Then I might say something.
If the hip hop world would stop treating evrything like a competition and stop hating because the next man got alittle more than you then you, or you caught feelings becuase you feel you should be where he/she is in their career, or you feel someone got over looked. LISTEN YOU WANT CHANGE??? PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS LITERALLY, bitching and complaining or cutting somes musical taste hasn’t done shit and never will period!!!!!

      1. crab ass niggas, thats how we black people are,its sad,but true, unlike the haters,im checking every week until he reaches Platinum status,i want that,i bought 3 copies myself, because it was a rejuvenating piece of Art Work.Niggas are hating on the fact that a westcoast rapper is in control once again, and unlike Game ,k.dot wont let his position slip ever,i dont see it happening,i dont see Kendrick making any bullshit albums like R.E.D. or Jesus Piece, but back to the main topic,Timberlake & Taylor swift do most sell because they are White, thats a fact, same for Eminem, there are more white people in this country & world,so the fact that white people can identify with timberlake & swift more than they can kendrick lamar or T.I. is a no brainer,im not racist, just presenting clear society facts(not towards you, just the for the world to understand),cause timberlakes CD isnt shit, its good music, but thats its, nothing special, all those white girls and white people were fiending for a new JT album for years and flocked to it,same for taylor swift who has millions of white kid fans, and just overall white people flocking and white people really backing them over Rappers/MCs/R&B Singers.

      2. What ever gave you the idea that they’re actually rap music fans? Think about that one. Anyone can come here and throw shade on an artist over a photo or a headline and disrupt the comments, doesn’t mean they actually are an avid Hip Hop music lover. More so, they’re probably a “link follower”.

      3. @Lets keep it real, SO you mean to tell me that there is not at least ONE MILLION hip hop fans that can buy albums? You an idiot for pulling the race card on sales! The difference is black folks want shit for free! No need to get mad at the truth nigga! Check the difference between mixtape down loads and albums sales! Is not hard to tell that niggas want shit for free! DO you see country and pop artist coming out with free music? Fuck no! For the reason that they support they music. White people support they kind why cant you niggas stop crying and support your artist?!
Only nigga I support on this list is KL, only good album on charts! @chainz trash, Wiz just raps bout weed, TRASH Jesus piece, trash! Done fell off the charts! Support your artist niggas and stop crying!

      4. “thats how we black people are”

^ and what makes you think they’re Black

Because they type n*gga in here? I see them slip up on the reg. Besides, look at the comment above. Think of sites like chimpout that post links to this site all the time. Y’all look stupid self hating right now.

“there are more white people in this country & world”

        ^ this dude

        Asians
        Blacks
        Whites

WELL KNOWN FACT Whites are the MINORITY on the PLANET. Close to 170m are in the US, about 46m Blacks are in the US. So OF COURSE, the Elvises, The Beatles, The Eminems, Taylor Swifts, and Justins will sell more. This is why we laughed when they were crying, saying all Blacks voted for Obama when they have BEEN practicing that method.

    11. congrats to my nigga macklemore for getting that indie money. I told y’all muthafuckers that he’s going gold or platinum. congrats to my nigga JT for selling platinum records in his first week. what happened to that nigga tip? he selling like he used to be. wiz, game, meek and asap flopped real bad.

      1. Yeah congrats to JT for hittin a millie..Thats good for a pop artist, which he is!. Tip is going gold AND his album is doing better than his last…

    12. i wonder how many IANAHB2 albums Baby will purchase to make lil wayne appear to still look relevant.

Wayne said Fck TMZ because of what they reported about him, but then he did an interview a week later *WITH TMZ*, saying that he’s good. (the interview with TI in it).

      Publicity stunt!

    13. Congrat JT, the album is worth the numbers. Will be tuned in next week to see the 9th wonder of the world, if wayne sells more than 100k then hip hop is officially dead, that album sounds worst that a microwave.

    14. JT Done did it sopn! Good CD I must say!
Game fell off the charts, lol not surprised
Chief hanging by a a hair, You keep doing 3800 the rest of the year and you won’t get drop son!
Lamar, still wants that plat plaque!

      1. Im NOT surprised u suck dick for a living u soft ass bitch…GAME going Gold soon enough, as soon as he drops the video for Ali Bomaye and Tours, you un-educated chi town fool..

      2. stop saying the same shit. a video and a tour isnt gonna help sell 200k more albums. he is most certainly not “going gold soon enough”

      3. Really @The Truth?! Nigga stop with the dam post! ANother video and tour and going gold! It gets old nigga! He felt off the charts! At this point Chief still on charts, thats how much game done fell off!
Un-educated? Sure! laughing at yo dumb ass

      1. A label will ship an amount to distributors who fill the store orders who stock the shelves and take inventory. Justin shipped a million copies, if he did 6 or 8 hundred thousand, no need to re-order just yet. Hardly a “trend”.

        But I’m the sheep. L O L

      1. Months of your babble, myself and others literally point our fingers on your forehead and tell you to prove YOUR words, and all you have are these weak, insolent retorts.

        You wack son.

      1. officer Ricky put molly in his champagne and he aint even know it. He took him home and enjoyed that, and he aint even know it

    15. People on this site who illegally download rap albums, but legally support timberlake deserve to have a syringe with AIDS blood inserted into their asscrack.

    16. “myself and others literally point our fingers on your forehead and tell you to prove YOUR words”

This is entertainment loner boy, not the real world, cause if any of this was real you’d meet me face to face. Instead you choose to hide and fling insults all because your old and grumpy.

    17. “its not a “trend” its how they have always done it”

In the old days, you had to actually sell a mill to be certified, which wasn’t hard to do cause people bought almost everything that came out. These days, to save artists egoes and possibly careers, it gets reported that they go platinum when in many cases they didn’t.

    18. certain artist move units because they not featured on every artist song or putting out mixtapes every week

    19. “A label will ship an amount to distributors who fill the store orders who stock the shelves and take inventory”

They forecast what they think will be high demand, but since were in a bootlegging age you can often go to any store and find most albums just sitting on a shelf collecting dust. IMO, regardless of what gets shipped, why should ANY artist get credited or bumped up simply because a store paid for extra copies that they then can’t then turn around and sell? Think Donnis. I realize your old and grumpy, but I have faith that you can grasp these simple concepts.

      1. You’re spitting the old, grumpy version dude. They don’t ship platinum or double anymore since the JLo buy-back fiasco, they send out increments and count the distributor sales as units. JT, the smooth R&B, SNL guest alum, part time actor who has a stake in the NBA Grizzlies will get a million printed. Scans AND orders will tell them how much to print this go around, probably a half a million because of the second week drop off.

To clarify my “simple concept” is hardly a “trend”, Coca-Cola counts distributor orders, not store scans. They don’t wait to see how many sodas McDonald’s sells, they sell them bulk and McD’s gets their own money. That’s where you get DISCOUNTS and STORE MARKUPS.

But when they started this, you were probably one of the SHEEP that were saying the labels were UNDER-SHIPPING.

    20. “Coca-Cola counts distributor orders, not store scans. They don’t wait to see how many sodas McDonald’s sells, they sell them bulk and McD’s gets their own money. That’s where you get DISCOUNTS and STORE MARKUPS”

Great for Mcdonalds, but not at all on topic. Illegal downloading is costing the music industry millions, so I just don’t buy that alot of these albums are platinum when it’s clear their numbers aren’t even close to be ok to nudge up. Then you glance every week at the scores of albums that are flopping and any logical person would see what some of these labels are doing. If Kendrick was at 945,000 (actually sales) and some outlet reported he was platinum then big deal. That’s pretty close as it is. AS IT IS NOW, he hasn’t even cracked the 900,000 mark, plus if I went to the store right now I bet you I’d find a gang of copies lying on the shelf. Granted, that’s only one store, but you get my point. Labels manipulate the public because they can.

    21. “its by how many albums are shipped not actually sold”

And what I’m saying for like the hundreth time is that’s wrong. Why should Kdot (just to name one) not be expected to physically sell 1 million copies to earn his certification?

    22. “BECUASE THATS HOW IT HAS WORKED FOR DECADES”

No retard. For decades the big time artists actually sold what they bragged about. Fans bought the albums, so naturally nobody questioned the numbers. It’s not like that now. Nobody calls up the stores and asks how many copies of GFID got shipped this week.

    23. “arguing with quoteman is a lost cause”

Half a man, I’ve beaten you down so many times my hand wants me to apologize.

      1. and how many times have you been totally owned with facts on this website and just not responded? too many to count bitch

    24. “and how many times have you been totally owned with facts on this website and just not responded?”

Totally owned by who? lol I hit you with fact and perspective. Try it sometime. Oh, and I don’t respond cause I have a life. Can’t play all day, sport.

    25. “LOST CAUSE”

Yes you are. But for the sake of grimey, in your face debate, why are you ok with awarding an album platinum status if you know the sales don’t add up? I’m pretty sure you don’t tabulate the shipping counts every week, so all you have to go on then are the sales totals each week. I’m not the first person to question this practice.

      1. im not saying its okay but if thats how its been done for year and year then you cant stop it now. unless they wanna start taking back platinum and gold records they gotta leave it be

    26. Wayne is on track for 210,000 high end estimate. Not bad for everybody and their drunk Uncle saying how much it sucked.

      1. still pretty bad compared to his past efforts and all those wayne stans saying he was gonna go platinum first week

    27. “Illegal downloading is costing the music industry millions”

      ^ WRONG!

“Illegal Music Downloads Not Hurting Industry, Study Claims”-Time Magazine, 4 days ago

NO LABEL is waiting for Wal-mart, Target, Best Buy, AND other retailers to count up scans. THEY ARE SELLING BY BULK, AND NOT USING YOUR MOM AND POP FORMULA.

    28. Macklemore and Kendrick are my favorite rappers, but Macklemore has been my favorite since I heard gift shop on the radio. They are real rappers and I’m glad they are selling the most. And I’m not racist, I think Macklemore and his partner Ray Lewis make a nice gay couple, hip-hop needs equality. What they do is their business. Macklemore knew he was gay since 3rd grade, so he’s been through a lot more than you guys hating.

      1. Hate on what? Nobody’s even checking for this bullshit compilation of throwaway tracks. Baby think he can just sell anything as long as it has Wayne on it and “part 2”.

    29. hiphopdx didn’t put ja rule up ’cause they scared of ja rule’s shiv. ja rule sold 10 mil with pil 2

    30. ja rule sells so many units, the units themselves run up in yo house and steal yo money so they could be bought

    31. “NO LABEL is waiting for Wal-mart, Target, Best Buy, AND other retailers to count up scans”

Best Buy doesn’t even stock many albums in bulk anymore. You’d know that if you got off the internet once in awhile and actually were around people. Not militia members.

    32. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), 30 billion songs were illegally downloaded between 2004 and 2009. Even with sites like iTunes and Rhapsody offering legal downloads, peer-to-peer file sharing still exists. Illegally downloading music has had a significant impact on the music industry resulting in a loss of profits and jobs, and changing how music is delivered to the masses.

    33. This has cost the industry something like 12 billion dollars, Donnis.

      Class most definately dismissed…

    34. “you really bragging about shopping at best buy now?”

Go back to watching Jersey Shore you lame faggot.

      1. Go back to watching Miami Vice reruns, listening to Pitbull and Birdman as well as Latino Rappers and maybe after that catch an episode of the Pauly D Show.

I’m gonna go jerk off to J-Wows titties whats your excuse for all your fuckery?

    35. I notice Donnis hasn’t responded. Hmmm…. When confronted with facts this lil bitch hides. Got anymore tidbits about Target or Mcdonalds, cocksucker? lol Maybe tommorow you can really top yourself by informing us that Chuck E. Cheese buys napkins in bulk.

    36. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE MAKES REAL HIP-HOP FOR THE STREETS AND THE CLUBS AND PEOPLE ALWAYS LIKE HIM, GO AND BUY HIS RECORD. HE WAS EVEN A MEMBER OF THE MOST FAMOUS GANGSTA HIP-HOP GROUP EVER, N SYNC. I LIKE HIS FLOW AND HE GOT REAL CONSCIOUS LYRICS. ESPECIALLY THE SONG ABOUT BEING FRESH, SUIT N TIE WITH JAY-Z.

    37. Good Kid, M.A.A.D City-Kendrick Lamar
      Long.Live.A$AP-A$AP Rocky
Trouble Man: Heavy Is The Head-T.I.
      The Heist-Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

      dark horses/long shots:

      O.N.I.F.C.-Wiz Khalifa
      Jesus Piece-The Game
Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors-Big Boi
      Dreams & Nightmares-Meek Mill

future releases that could possibly get nominated (if they were released before September 30th):

      Nothing Is The Same-Drake
      Eminem’s next album
      Kanye West’s next album
      Born Sinner-J Cole
      Street King Immortal-50 Cent
      Jay-Z’s next album

    38. “Go back to watching Miami Vice reruns, listening to Pitbull and Birdman as well as Latino Rappers and maybe after that catch an episode of the Pauly D Show”

You sound really close minded and bitter. May I ask if your parents are divorced? You’ve brought up Miami Vice so many times I honestly think you might be Don Johnson’s son.
