Recently, a headline in several articles in many different publications noted that Jay-Z declared J. Cole’s debut album a classic. When J. Cole was asked about this during a recent interview with AllHipHop, he responded by sharing his disappointment after reading the article and seeing that Jay-Z never actually told a publication that. Instead, the story came from Cole’s statements about what he’s heard from others about Jay-Z’s reaction to the album. He clarified the misunderstanding.
“When I saw the headline, I got happy. I was like, ‘Jay said my album’s a classic!’ And then I read it and it was like, (hits forehead with his palm).”
He went on to explain where the story came from.
“The story comes from me telling someone what I was told about what [Jay-Z] said. You know what I’m saying? It’s not like he did an interview and said it. But if you ask him, I’m sure he’ll probably tell you the same thing. But, it was so weird to see that headline.”

When asked how he felt when he initially read the headlines, he said he felt proud.
“When I heard that, I got really proud. It was cool. Imagine, it’s that nod of approval or that confirmation.”
The J. Cole/Jay-Z dynamic has been a topic of other discussions of late. The Jay-Z verse is also something J. Cole is waiting on, as he told HipHopDX’s own, Kathy Iandoli in a recent interview with DX.
“Your guess is as good as mine if we’re gonna get a Jay-Z verse,” he told DX.
