This past Saturday The Soul Train Music Awards broadcasted their annual show with many surprises and performances. Nelly won the award for Best Rap Album (“Nellyville”) over Ashanti (“Foolish”), Ll Cool J (“10”) and Nas (“Stillmatic”). Nelly also received the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for Entertainer of the Year.
During his acceptance speech Nelly said, “”We’ve only being doing this a short amount of time, and you don’t think you’ll be receiving awards like that so early on in your career. But the fans have fortunately put me in a position right now that I’ve been able to change – not only my life but a lot of lives around me – friends, family and such. It just feels real good to get an award like the Sammy Davis Junior Award – I never met the man. I wish I had. My grandfather loves him – so it’s big.”
LL Cool J won the award for Outstanding Male Achievement for his work in movies, music and books. LL Cool J, whose career has spanned almost twenty years, thanked several of the people that helped him through his career. “”I’d like to thank my mother and father for coming together in love to give me the opportunity to live on this planet. “I’d like to thank the most influential visionary in the history of hip-hop, Mr. Russell Simmons, for allowing me my dream to make this happen.” Besides winning these achievement awards both Nelly and LL Cool J performed during the show.
