In an unexpected move, several Muslims are planning to boycott Russell Simmons. Russell Simmons, who is a very focal and active member of the youth and hip-hop political movement (as well as a friend of Min. Louis Farrakhan), is being boycotted against because of a cover on the ONEWORLD magazine that feature Lil Kim.
The cover showed Lil Kim dressed in an “identifiable Islamic attire”, which Muslims alleged is “mocking the prescribed Islamic dress code for women”. Russell Simmons has not released a statement on the impending boycott against Def Jam, Baby Phat Clothing, Phat Farm and ONEWORLD Magazine.
“Mr. Simmons’ refusal to apologize, while he holds Minister Louis Farrakhan in high regard and has stood with him and many other Muslim men at the Million Man March and Hip Hop Summits appears very hypocritical. Mr. Simmons is obviously seeking to build bridges with Muslim men but appears unremorseful about sexualizing images of Muslim women”, Dr. Debra Mubashir, a spokeswoman for Project Islamic H.O.P.E
