Another rap lawsuit will be set to go to court. The hot new group Nappy Roots whose song “Aw Naw, Po Folks” propelled them up the charts, is being sued for allege lack of payment to St. Louis “hip hop” producer Willie Woods.
Willie Woods alleges he wrote and performed music (he plays bass and guitar) on the Grammy nominated group’s album “Watermelon, Chicken and Grits”, with the expectation that he would receive acknowledgement and compensation for his time, says he received neither. “While Nappy Roots and the defendants have received great acclaim and financial success from the Po’ Folks song, Mr. Woods has received no songwriter, producer or performer credit and no compensation,” the lawsuit alleges.
Nappy Roots and Atlantic Records have yet to release a statement in response to the lawsuit. The group is nominated in the best rap-song collaboration category, which will be broadcast later this month.
