The birth of the Zulu Nation, which came one year before the recognized birth of hip hop, was nearly 29 years ago. The Universal Zulu Nation is gearing up for the celebration of their anniversary. While the actual date of Zulu’s creation is November 12th, the celebrations will take place from November 8th to the 10th in New York City.

At this years celebration the Zulu Nation will pay tribute to the fathers of funk, which obviously had a huge influence on hip hop music. Among those honoured will be James Brown, George Clinton, and Sly and the Family Stone. Hip hop’s founding fathers will also be paid tribute at the event, namely Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa and Kool DJ Herc. There will be emcee, deejay and b-boy competitions in addition to panel discussions and some special performances.
