Ahead of his performance at the Sunset Music Festival in September, Iamsu! spoke with HipHopDX about his reaction to the DX review of his debut album Sincerely Yours in May.
“Hey man, I’ma keep it real with ya’ll,” he said in a clip that debuted as a part of today’s DX Daily (October 1). “This is HipHopDX and ya’ll gave me a crummy ass review. I was hot as fuck, I’m gonna be honest with you. ‘Cause I’m a big ass fan of the site, every day, I’m on there, on my phone. So I seen it, shit I put my whole heart into this CD. It’s like a child, so it’s like somebody saying something about your kid. I was like, ‘What the fuck?’ I was hot. I take my shit that serious, you know? But I understand. Everything is just a variable. Everybody ear ain’t the same and everybody’s not gon’ feel my story the way they supposed to so it’s my job to explain that. So it took a little growing up but once I did that it’s all good. It’s all respect. But trust me I was hot as fuck though ‘cause I take my shit serious. I’m supposed to be mad. I understand though.”
Sincerely Yours was released in May and featured production from Iamsu! himself, Jake One, Trackademicks, Chase N. Cashe, and more. The album’s features included 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, Dizzy Wright, and Too Short.
HipHopDX rated Sincerely Yours with three out of five X’s in a review published on the day of release. “Iamsu! is a relatively adept rapper—far more proficient than his HBK Gang comrade Sage the Gemini—but he isn’t quite an efficient song maker.” DX’s Sheldon Pearce wrote. “He has yet to generate a true club hit like Sage, and the rest of his music lands in other uncharted soundspace (both figuratively and literally). ‘T.W.D.Y.’ falls well short of similar charting songs fashioned in the same vein—YG’s ‘Who Do You Love?’ for instance—and ‘Girls’ isn’t exactly a ballad in the purest sense, though it would like to be. His content is rather formulaically structured lyrically, and he isn’t a particularly profound songwriter, so he often relies on the strength of his production to carry him. Unfortunately, outside of spurts of genius, Sincerely Yours doesn’t punch with the ferocity of past work. In total, it is somewhat blasé.”
Today, Iamsu! appeared on Chinx’s new single “Feelings (Yay-Mix).” The Bay Area rapper is currently travelling with G-Eazy as a part of the Bay To The Universe Tour.

Truth hurts…
That album did suck. Hopefully he uses the hard truth to make his future material better, because he needs it.
That’s what I’m talking bout.
The album was ok but I’d recommend better production to back the lyrics. If you got a connection with DJ Mustard, go after some of his beats.
Yep, Mustard’s a good recommendation, if you want your album to sound like one long song.
Fuck what yu hurd, Sincerely yours was a brilliant album altogether. I normally don’t listen to comersh. but that album is still one of my favorites from the new school. if you reading this SU – make more of that banging shit and don’t compromise quality – maybe that is why you missed them haters on such an aspect…I guarantee you they are going to go back and listen a few years from now and they will bow coz shit was real besides being hot…I dig that album I think it the best you made so far.
Album was bad, but like KRIT, mixtape/underground stuff was better.
new niggas…
Iamsu’s album was dope. But it wasn’t as good as his mixtape for example KILT II. That shit had that vibe man “Changes”, “Hipser Girls” maan I was bangin that shit whole summer. And I’m from Poland tho
iono i always felt like SU is exceptional at capturing a vibe and selecting beats.. but his lyrics have always been basic, like more generic than YG (who stole his fanbase)
still got love for you SU! you just dont have much replay value!
