Hip Hop Week In Review: Yelawolf, Young Thug, Big Sean

This week saw Yelawolf’s second album as a major-label artist jump into the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 upon release, the best debut of his career thus far. Less celebratory, Young Thug was booed during a live performance in Louisiana late last week but persevered through the set, tellings audience members, “I still love you.”

Meanwhile, Big Sean recently opened up about the passing of his grandmother earlier this year, Mannie Fresh dropped some new details about Lil Wayne’s Carter V, and Lil Wayne himself had some shots fired at his tour bus.

Hip Hop Album Sales: Yelawolf, Drake, Kendrick Lamar

Earlier this week Yelawolf’s second Shady Records release marked his first album to crack into the Top 10 ever after debuting at #27 in 2011 with Radioactive. Despite putting up the second most album sales of the week, Yelawolf’s Love Story clocks in at #3 this week due to relatively lower streaming activity than the Furious 7 soundtrack at #2. Yelawolf’s first album since Radioactive sold 51,472 first-week units and was streamed just over 2.75 million times. By contrast, that last album sold just over 40,000 albums upon release in late 2011.

Young Thug Booed In Louisiana During Show

Performing at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana last Saturday night (April 25) during a stop on his tour with Travi$ Scott, Young Thug was booed by audience members who already pledged their allegiance to the home state bred Lil Wayne.

Amidst interludes of fans chanting “Wayne,” “Hollygrove” and “fuck you,” Thug told them, “I still love you.”

Big Sean Speaks On Grandmother’s Passing

“She was one of the first female Black captains in World War II,” Big Sean recently said of his grandmother, who passed away earlier this year. “She was one of the first female cops in Detroit. She was a teacher, a counselor. She was the best grandma. She was the best mom to my mom.”
