With Troy Davis‘ execution scheduled for tonight, Hip Hop has taken to Twitter to encourage followers to take action and try to reverse the verdict.
Rappers including Big Boi, Talib Kweli, Killer Mike and more have expressed their outrage over the injustice served to Davis, while DJs including DJ Drama, DJ Scratch and DJ Clark Kent have voiced their opinions on the case.
Check below to see just a slice of what Hip Hop has to say about Troy Davis.
Here we go again. A bunch of ignorant, race blinded idiot rappers trying to save the life of a guy who addmittely was there at the time the officer got killed, and who has been linked to another prior shooting. Plus it’s very convenient how witnesses who testified under oath are now suddenly changing their stories by saying Davis didn’t pull the trigger. Dude needs a miracle.
This issue for clemency is not for is the man committed the crime, but on during the trial why they chose the sentence that they did. There were some “experts” who stated that because he is black he is statistically more probable to be unreformed by a life sentence. Thus they said because he is from a high risk race he should be executed. That is not having a fair and impartial jury or trial if things like this are permissible in court. Violates the Constitution.
@ Nico3, trust me it dont there a lot to be a rapper, as long as you cant cuss, and say some stuff that ryhms with it, you are goo, most of these fool didnt even made it pass the 4 grade most less to have any idea or intelligence to what going on,a bunch of ignorant fools, why you think, they wait until there get rich to wanta die or go to jail go figure
@info….nevermind…it’s just too easy.
You wicked phukkas, does everything have to be about race? The death penalty is questionable at best, but, It’s definitely WRONG if an innocent person, or even one who you are not 1000% sure of their guilt, has to face it. Do you know much about the case? Do you know why some of the 8 out of ten witnesses, changed their changed their statement in support of Mr. Davis? Do you know that many people, organizations, and even the Pope, support him? From what I understand, one out of the two remaining who haven’t recanted their statement, is the real probable shooter. Instead of requesting anything special to eat for his last meal, which is what they always offer, the man asked to take a lie detector test, to show that he did not commit the crime, and they wouldn’t even grant him that. It’s truly remarkable that sooo many of these proponents of the death penalty, call themselves Christians.
Because everyone just found out about it….
i wonder if all these rappers and djs would be doing this if it was a white guy about to get the death penalty for something thats “doubtable” SMH
White guys are not thought to be part of a statistical high probable race to commit crime, by the trials standards. Thus a white man would not just be sentenced to death on account of his race. Obvious you forget about the privelege you have as a white person to be treated as an individual when you are white. Other non-whites do not get that sort of fair treatment. So your comment leads me to believe that you have had your head in the sand like an ostrich. Charles Manson or the millions of other serial killers that are white are individualized yet ethnic minorities failures are often generalized, excluding Asians with their perception in academia. Furthermore, the justice system acts as a fair entity when a white person is on trial, so your point is unfounded. Whites don’t support blacks in injustices yet want our support for hypothetical questions of things that haven’t even happened to them, a bit childish.
hold up got a better one man would any of these rapper even say something if was their mom’s pop’s, brother or sister, this nigga killed, bet you their twitters would have been different stupid ass niggas.
dis aint about race u red necks, someone is facing execution and all you do is talk bout race..
@Okay
Stop misleadin people, there are no laws that persecute one race more than another in America. If there are, please point them out. We should fight them together, because they are clearly in violation of the 14th Amendment. [Paranoid as shit, but its cool, I got a public education from the socialist liars too].
@ real talk stfu u fucking idiot socialist dont run anything in america the corporation who fund politicians do…please stop watching fox news….u ignorant wastes of space…..a democratic socialism would be the salvation of the poor and downfall of the economic elites
Dont worry, im sure Eminem would get the job done. Im sick of you fucking crackers on a hiphop site playing the boo hoo what if the shoes was on the other foot shit. You are not black, and while you might listen to our music and try to dress like us and blah blah, you will NEVER know what it is to be black in this world. You are quick to say we play the race card and shit like that, but having never had that benefit of bearing melanin, you dont know shit. And as far as it not being fair, tell me why Charles Manson & Casey Anthony are not worried about taking their last breath. Oh that’s right, they are both white so they must be right.
FOH for real man.
does busta rhymes really think himw writing on twitter is gonna change the mind of a damn judge haha
Amean come on man Busta should be the last person even open to say anything, this nigga watch his bodygaurd got kill and wouldnt even tell the police who did it and all his bodygaurd was doing is protecting him, come on busta man shut up and sit down somewhere man go write a ryhm
Probably not.. but he’s voicing his opinion. Nothing wrong with that!
Man all these rapper and niggas make me sick, who was there speaking again it when he kill those people nobody, no rapper no niggas, and now come time for him to face up for what he did everybody talking dont kill him, man F all your’ll rapper, funny 99.999% of rapper rap about killing niggas, so what the different now as*holes
WHERE WERE THEY EVERYDAY WHEN US BLACKS KILL EACHOTHER??!?!?!?!??!?1?1
HAHAHA!!!@ rappers trying to ‘make a difference’ via twitter. That’s like someone tossing a jellybean to a starving man from a leer jet. Hip-Hop is pathetic..btw, you can’t be named ‘Killer Mike’ and then boycott an execution.
Rappers are embarasssing.
I agree, and your right about how its more about economic class and injustices than race. I have compassion for all people but when have whites in America fought for the injustices of black people in this country?? Yes racism sucks, but I always see people saying what if it were a white man so maybe their the ones that have no compassion because this article isn’t about a white man.
@Marxist L-Boogie
If economic class is as big of an issue as you say it is, than how do you explain that Bernie Madoff is locked away for 1000 years?
Secondly, I know you marxist love to be dumb as fuck on history, but really… There were many whites that fought and died for the equality of the races. Look up the Abolitionist movement. Look up the Freedom Rides. Look up the students at Berkley in the 50’s. There was a famous case of three college kids, two of which were white, that were killed by the KKK, cuz they were comin down south to help fight segregation. Look up what James Madison and Alexander Hamilton and John Adams and Ben Franklin speakin out about racism in America.
Whoever taught u (or didnt teach you) that history is just tryin to create disorder and confusion, because they want to push their false wacked out hippie world view on our generation.
Because Bernie Madoff fucked over a bunch of rich white people. If he screwed over a bunch of black people he’d be a fuckin’ folk hero.
i swear rappers use anything for attention and publicity
Are all of you serious?? I read some comments saying “Rappers will do anything for publicity” and “people die all the time, why don’t they do anything about that?” and “If this guy was white, they wouldn’t do anything”. Really?? Is Fox News here or somthing, cause you all sound retarded. Maybe they should just do it your way and do nothing and let someone who die who shouldn’t. You guys are Ignorant as fuck.
I just think people feel like it’s too little too late for these rappers to be trying to take s stand now, when most of them have done nothing but contribute to the problem. It’s like they pick a “cause” to get behind because it’s trendy, then they all act like they’re outraged. Where’s the outrage in the ‘Hip-Hop community’ when 90% of the rappers who are popular infuse poison into the kids’ minds and convince them to be drug dealers and womanizers. On top of that, it all just seems so contrived and insincere. If these fools had to give up 2% of their paycheck to save this guy, they wouldn’t do it.
Btw, a cop just beat a homeless white man to death in California and it was caught on tape, let’s see if we get the same ‘outrage’ from the Hip-Hop community.
Look, I’m not against rappers trying to take a stand, I just think the first stand they need to take is against themselves. Hold themselves and each other to a higher standard of conduct and influence, then someone might take these fools seriously.
We all know blacks and other ethnic groups are racially profiled and disrespected more by the police so why should rappers take a stand when a white dude gets beat up by the police when it rarely occurs. White people always trying to flip shit to make the situation about them.
Listen man…this whole mindset of blacks vs. whites is the problem. Don’t you understand that injustice is injustice? If you were a white dude, and you were being wronged, you would want a fair shake just like anyone else. I’m not disputing that black people have it worse than white people. Shit, I’m mixed, and I don’t look black OR white, so I’ve experienced racism from BOTH sides, and I still do, all the time. But I don’t let that jade my perception of what’s right and what’s wrong. You think this homeless white man that got beaten to death gets treated like a business man on wall street just because he’s white? The injustices are not just about race, they are about economic class. Yes, black people are at the bottom of the economic scale, mainly because they have been discriminated against. But being someone who has been treated unjustly, shouldn’t that trigger some compassion in your heart for someone else who is being treated unjustly? or is your compassion simply limited to black people? If so, you’re no worse than the people who discriminate against you. Peace.
He’s black, so he must be innocent!
The hiphop community didn’t care too much about justice for the hundreds of black youth that were murdered in the hood last year, but good to see them looking out for this guy… smh
Look, i could sit here all day and say what rapper should or should not be tweeting about this but the FACTS are, they’re trying to execute a man for a crime to which they have little next to no evidence:That’s the issue here:
All you white people saying “would they do this for a white man?” NO THEY WOULDN’T:GET OVER IT:THEY’RE BLACK MEN SUPPORTING ANOTHER BLACK MAN:The next time a white man is hours away from execution then you and your friends can protest the courts but NOW, the focus is on Troy Davis so keep that racial sh*t to yourselves:Stay positive and stay focused:
(Oh and btw, there are a lot of white people who are apart of this protest as well:Infact, this started because of a WHITE investigator:Stop making this about race and pay more attention to the lesson at hand)
WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!
This reminds me of that time when BET was doing that stupid tv special about that gang member who founded the bloods and tried to get him out of execution cause he writes children’s books.
This is about the same as that.
tookie williams….he founded the crips….jus clearin that up….but i hear ya
@Cealix Ya thats what im sayin, mind u BETs news coverage on everything is BIAS as shit, and while Im tellin all my boys that sellin drugs is gonna fuck up your life, BET is brain washin the youth wit documentaries on legendary criminals “American Gangsters”. How about a documentary on Booker T Washington or how about on the black Founding Fathers? Nope. Than they want to make us cry over Tookie, cmon, Im not for the death penalty, but your talkin about a real violent dude there.
@Realtalk. That shit is so true man. It makes me sick they way they glorify crime on BET. BET is the most sickening channel I’ve ever seen in my life. Everything on it, from American Gangster to 106&Park to the shows about golddiggers and shit are all aimed to mislead young black people, and they’re doing a fine job of it.
People always say “Rappers aren’t the problem, the problem is much deeper than that, and if rappers got together and started a movement towards positivity it wouldn’t do anything”, but I don’t believe that. Rappers have made a movement towards negativity in the past several years and we’ve seen the damage that has done, so why can’t the pendulum swing in the other direction?
I think people underestimate how much influence rappers have over kids. Kids walk up and down my street all day with thier headphones on, reciting lyrics as they walk down the street “Gettin money bitch, gettin gettin money bitch, yeah I’m gettin’ money bitch”…you don’t think them listening to that shit all day has any effect on them? You can tell it does just from the demeanor they carry as they listen to it.
If a difference is going to be made in a positive direction for young black people, it’s gonna have to be rappers that lead it. We already know the government doesn’t give a fuck, and black people in the hood have NO voices except for these dumb ass rappers. It’s pretty sad when we’re relying on idiots named Lil Trappy and Young Flappy to save people.
@Sensaye252
Rap music doesn’t raise children. That’s the parents job. Can’t blame television for the way your kids turn out:
@Prince Jimmy. Everybody says that. But the fact is, the kids in the hood that worship these rappers most times don’t have responsible parents and thats why they’re in the hood in the first place. So, do we just throw our hands up and say “Okay, these kids don’t have good parents, so fuck ’em”. No. We, as a society, have to be responsible for ALL children. Rap music DOES raise alot of children. When I was little, I was raised by a single Mother, and I was alone most of the time listening to rap music. The difference is, I was listening to guys like LL Cool J, Rakim, Kane, Public Enemy, Ice-T, and the message was positive, so I turned out to be a positive person. If I would’ve been listening to mysogynistic glorified crime stories and ‘get money’ anthems all day, I would have turned out different.
I’m a Father, and my children live with me. But I can’t deny that media has as much of an influence of them as I do, and I’m constantly fighting against this media monster that tries to oversexualize and miseducate my kids, and most of it comes from rap music, straight up.
And your plan to fight back is to come on a HipHop website to voice your opinion?
My plan on fighting back is having a positive impact on people, being a good person myself, and trying to raise my kids to be good people. I’m not a saint, that’s for sure. But when I see something that I feel isn’t right, I speak on it. Whether it’s on a Hip-Hop website or at City Hall.
Mumia all over again…
Go read the facts of the case. If it really is necessary, look at the racial composition of the jury. Dude killed a cop, and there was enough evidence.
This dude is no Sean Bell. Troy Davis committed murder and was convicted properly, but like Mumia he’s doin a great job of playin the part of “soft spoken victim of racial injustice”.
If you are really for justice and against racism, dont stand up for people like this.
What exactly are the facts?? 7 of the 9 witnesses have recanted their story & expressed that the Savannah police department pressured & coerced them to make those statements. The same man who identified Davis as the shooter has also been identified as the shooter by other witnesses. That same man has been telling people for years that he shot the cop. What evidence did they recover? Where’s the gun? Clothes? etc… Maybe it’s part of the evidence that the SPD illegally seized from Troy’s mothers house after they threatened to kick her door in if she didn’t allow them to search her home without a warrant. A lot of politicians, entertainers, activists are hopping on the bandwagon to serve their own agendas. I been following this since I was 10 years old. I don’t know if he guilty or innocent & neither do they. I do know the justice system down there is fucked up!! This could be any of us. What happened to ‘Beyond a reasonable doubt’? GA don’t give a fuck about that! When Jimmy Carter, the Son of GA speaks out against his own on behalf of a black man… That alone should tell you something. I’m not saying free Troy Davis but I am saying don’t kill the man.
Hey what’s this shit about where were rappers when… WHAT FUCKING SONGS were you clowns listening to all these years???? Not any 2Pac songs. Not any P.E. songs. Not any Moss Def, Tribe, NWA and hundreds of other RAP SONGS screaming about this shit! Fuck you motherfucking FAKE ASS hip-hop fans. Rappers BEEN preaching on this UNJUST bullshit for YEARS!!
Oh but the only fucking thing you nerds hear is Eminem bitching about his mommy.
That was 15 years ago though my man. Rappers haven’t given a fuck about anything but their money for at least a decade now.
You should listen to Mosh
@ 100: Totally fucking agree with you, there’s so much in the back catalogs of hip-hop on social topics.
@ M:
Because political opinions from some high school dropout pill-popper are SO well-informed. Dick-rider.
WHAT ABOUT LIBYA AFRICA??????? HE MEDIA CAN SHOW BLACK PEOPLE FIGHTING FOR THIS DUDE BUT NOT AFRICA?
WHERE IS HIP-HOP TO FIGHT AGAINST THE TAXES ON THE POOR????
DOES HIP-HOP THINK WE SHOULD TAX THE RICH???
Fuck outta here. This dude who already had a questionable past, shot one nigga, beat a homeless man, and then shot a cop. Dude is found washing blood out of his fuckin clothes the same night, and the very gun that could be used to clear his name has mysteriously gone missing. No doubt the cops banged on these witnesses, but my bet is Troy’s connections got to the witnesses. Now all of a sudden, 7 witnesses see things differently, and have the same damn story on why that happened. And unless dude was masturbatin all over the shell casings and kissing his victims, why the fuck would there be a DNA link? He got rid of his link (the gun). As far as I’m concerned, this dude’s residence is somewhere in Hell, and I pray to God the great state of GA sends him home tonight. There are innocent niggas in prison that we should fight for. Troy Davis wasn’t one of them.
I say hang the feck. At the very least he is guilty of shooting the man in the face before the officer, and I frankly have no doubt he shot the officer too. I swear, you fecking racists who want freedom for him because he is black and his victim was white, disgusting. Racism goes more than one way, and from what I have seen (OJ?) it often comes from you blacks.
I don’t agree that he should be free. I don’t think he should be executed based on the evidence they have.
i agree. get off your bandwagon. ya’ll just like to push buttons, and be loud, and when someone is trying to make things efficient, ya’ll say “no one tells me what to do” and get into trouble. think about the idea of the police. this dude went against that.
Jimmy Carter backs him and he’s white as well as the Pope.
Sensaye252 looks like u got this covered. I agree with everything you’ve posted. by the way rappers, Obama could give two shits about this guy.
See, alot of these dudes get involved in bad shit, make the wrong decisions, then in their last hour, it finally dawns on them that they have to finally be held accountable for their actions. So they play the race card. The sympathy card. The wrong man scenario. Anything to keep them from being accountable. I’m sure some killers wish they could go back and make a different choice, but in life, there isn’t a rewind button. Even if by a prayer, his execution got delayed, that doesn’t mean he’s innocent of god knows how many other things. Things that are right there in fine print for any judge to read. The system is flawed, but it’s still the system, and just because a group of people are now protesting doesn’t mean the system will change itself and how it inteprets things like murder. Especially when it comes to slain officers.
Am pretty sure this man is innocent. Am 100% in support of the death penalty punishment, but execute when there is minimal or absolutely no doubt about someones guilt. The Case of the man is different, too many doubts. Pls don’t execute this Man….If u want to, then clear the doubts first!!!!
Statistics have shown that the death penalty doesn’t deter crime. It’s useless.
white people are so hateful n blind and easy to believe the government and worship laws written by land stealing slave masters…..
please be informed if ur going to state an opinion……i apologize for the generalization…its aimed towards those pretending white people are somehow wrongly treated in this country do to their race…thats laughable
Troy Davis was convicted in a court of law by a case that was found to be strong. 9 witnesses plus the circumstances placed him as the culprit. Even if the witnesses recanted, not only is this common in death penalty cases years after (even when they dont mean it) but they didn’t recant under oath in a court where they could be cross examined therefore it could not be used as evidence. im sure we can all agree witness statements outside court shouldn’t hold weight unless we ant to plunge every case into anarchy.
SO he was originaly convicted by a jury that was composed of five whites and SEVEN blacks. But you know what, white people are so hateful. its their fault that this happened. They werent just doing their jobs with what was given and the black people involved…pffft… lets ignore that.
The problem with most of us black people is blaming white people for things like this. You can have your opinion that you dont agree with the verdict, but to claim racism and ignore all the other facts. come on man.
Im white and this is fucked up. I dont believe in the justice system of today. First the Casey Anthony thing now this. We need select politicians, police officers and other representatives hand picked by the communities to represent us not the fake snake ass ones that get into power positions. Our system needs radical reform, imminently! We cant let these kind of injustices go on any longer!
i knew he was gettin executed regardless cuz this country aint as great as yall think it is, its only gonna get worse u will see.
Here the truth and a little lessen for all your’ll dumb ass BLACK PEOPLE out there NIGGAS, how the hell anyone in power going too take any request from rapper serious, when that all most rapper rap about is murder, murder, kill, kill, you cant glorify something then turn around and be against it, doesn’t made sense to anyone that have a high education that most of these dumb ass rapper do. Seriously explain
