Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 11/24/2013

This week on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart, Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 lands back at #1, reclaiming the top spot from Lady Gaga, who earned the slot last week with her ARTPOP release. Although it is now in its third week and still at #1, Eminem isn’t the only Rap artist charting. This week, Yo Gotti’s I Am album breaks into the Top 10, Drake falls out of the Top 10 for the first time this year and Hopsin knocks himself into the Top 200 with Knock Madness. Here’s a look at some of the week’s movers and shakers on the Billboard Top 200.

    Eminem’s MMLP2 Is Back At #1

Last week, Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 was momentarily dethroned from the #1 spot by Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP release. However, all of that has changed this week, with Eminem reclaiming the top spot for the week. Em’s most recent release sold approximately 120,000 units this week, helping its total sales count hit approximately 1,124,000. Eminem’s supporters also helped other albums in his discography chart this week. The Marshall Mathers LP, for instance, lands at #135 with 3,900 units sold this week and The Eminem Show lands at #153 with 3,200 units sold for the week. Eminem’s Recovery also strikes at #168 with 3,200 units sold this week and Curtain Call lands at #197 with 2,800 units sold for the week. Eminem’s various projects have also been important for the rapper’s wellbeing, according to the Michigan emcee. During a recent cover story with Rolling Stone, Eminem spoke about how his music has impacted his life. “I’m as happy as I can be, I guess,” Eminem says in the interview. “Hip Hop saved my life, man. It’s the only thing I’ve ever been even decent at. I don’t know how to do anything else. I think they have a word for that — what do they call it? Idiot savant?”

    Yo Gotti’s I Am Lands At #7

Yo Gotti’sbreaks into the Top 10 this week with I Am. The most recent Yo Gotti release sold 48,000 units, landing at #7 on the charts. Yo Gotti has been vocal about his artistic versatility. During an interview with HipHopDX, Gotti spoke about how some of that versatility can be found in his new music. “I’m gonna rap to the situation,” Gotti said. “Guess how many niggas I heard say, ‘Man, you stepped it up on that song with Wale on his album?’ That shit is a trip like I don’t do this shit [laughs]. You feel me? I’m rapping for the occasion. If I get on a song with Wale, guess what? I’m gonna make sure that my shit is tight enough to keep up with Wale. If I get on a song with J. Cole [‘Cold Blood‘], you gone see the same thing. I got J. Cole on my album, and when you hear his song, you gone see what’s poppin’. If I’m getting on a song with a certain kind of nigga, and the shit is supposed to be simple, it’s gonna be simple. That’s what it’s supposed to be. If I’m on a song where the bars and shit are supposed to be stepped up, then that’s what it’s gonna be.”

Drake’s Nothing Was The Same Falls To #14

This week, Drake’s Nothing Was The Same falls to #14. It is the first time Drake’s most recent project has fallen out of the Top 10. Last week, Drake landed at #9 with this project, which is in its ninth week overall. To date, Drake has sold more than 1,129,000 copies of the album. This week, Drake moved more than 30,000 units. Drake is currently on his “Would You Like a Tour?” run, but he may be ready to unveil new work soon. This week, Drake revealed that he is slated to release new music before the year ends. “Not an EP, but maybe a blog thing like how I did ‘Versace,’ ‘The Motion,’ all those in one night,” Drake said during a recent interview with VIBE. “I’ll probably do ‘Trophies’ and three or four other records.”

Hopsin Breaks Into Top 200 With Knock Madness

This week, Funk Volume’s Hopsin cracks the Top 200 with his new album, Knock Madness. The project lands the Panorama City, California representative at #132 after Knock Madness sold approximately 4,000 units for the week. In October, Hopsin spoke with HipHopDX about what the album means for his career and how it may impact his critics. “People say I say the same things over and over,” Hopsin said. “But in reality, I haven’t released an album in three years, so people haven’t really seen what I can do or who I am. Everybody in my XXL Freshmen thing, I think, did their thing. I haven’t come out with mine yet. This is my time. From all the hype you’ve ever seen from Hopsin, this is that moment of truth.” Knock Madness features guest appearances from Tech N9ne, SwizZz and Dizzy Wright, among others.

    1. I am trying to understand how hopsin ended up in this weeks chart?
His album came out yesterday so his weekly numbers should come out next week.

      1. That always happens to every album, I know stores that get the album a week earlier but they never count them as early projections.
        Something is not right.

      2. They prolly sent in the preorder numbers. I wondered about this at first as well. Its not instores yet. For a couple weeks Dame said. It’s only being sold on myfunkvolume.com for now besides Itunes n other didgital spots. So 4k in preorders independently isnt bad. His next week numbers should be higher though.

      3. @gimik313 could be, if i remember correctly RAW was only a digital release. Just like TDE used to do to avoid printing covers. making CD’s etc.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Funk Volume did the same.

      1. When she releases 7 albums and has a handful of gold and platinum singles then she can claim dominance over Khaled. Until then she can keep crying over the fact she’s sold 46,000 in two weeks.

      2. and khaled can keep crying over the fact he’s sold less than 46,000 in over a month with every big name in rap on his album!

    2. As a young money groupie bitch, with no accounting skills I can confirm that drake actually only sold 2 copies. Birdbitch fucked me in the ass til I bought one and then he bought the other.

      1. No stan, I agree with d first comment. For Eminem standard, the sales are pretty low. But yeah, he’s still the highest in his lowest.

    3. Yo Gotti moved more first week than DJ Khaled in over a month that shit cray! DJ Khaled needs to find a new day job

      1. Why trade salaries with those bums when you could trade with someone who’s actually successful like Diddy or Jay Z or Dr. Dre.

      1. Obviously. Necro’s idea of promotion was going on some gay-bashing rant on Vlad TV. Promoting his album by being the only guy supporting Lord Jamar’s comments was idiotic.

      2. you are sorely mistaken if you think Yelawolf agreed with his statements. He agreed with the obvious fact that didn’t even need to be mentioned which is that black people created hip hop. But Yela came out against Jamars gay and white rapper comments and started a big ol beef over it. You gotta stay tuned in to comment on DX boy!

    4. ok first off. hi haters. why dont yall take a day off for thanksgiving. second off. my boi 2 chainz does it again. outsells “king” kendrick and based god Jay z. chainz killing it these days with the massive beats and sicky lyrics. dude is a modern day poet with his rhyme schmes. so good to see that REAL hip hop is selling. thats 2 chainz. and fake pop ish is failling like with lame z and kendrick. ya bish? ya you bish! ya damn bish!!!!

      1. Fresh, you are an idiot for two things:

        1. Co-signing yourself again.

        2. Getting your shit wrong. Kendrick and Jay Z outsold 2 Chainz; they went platinum, Tity Boi didn’t. And you got it backwards. Chainz is the fake pop rappper with generic beats and shitty lyrics.

      2. Why would you scroll down to the C-Section if you didn’t want to see any haters? This is where they live. That’s like going to the hood and not trying to see any colored folk.

      1. why? yo Gotti been puttin in work growing a fanbase for almost 10 years, hopsins only a few years around and hes doing it all from the bottom with his own label with no funding…its reasonable that an established artist whos been around and is promoted everyware to get 10x more sales then an artist whos barely been around and isnt getting promotion everware

    5. Shit is sad but predictable.

The whites, half-whites and Black-hipsters are the only ones moving major units, the streets can’t eat anymore off the mainstream if Yo Gotti can’t do 50K first week while the white Mac Miller does 100K first week.

At least we still have the underground to enjoy and support without the dilution.

      1. A Majority of the biggest and most succesful underground rappers are either white (Atmosphere, ICP) or have primarily white fans (Tech N9ne, Hopsin)

So it looks like you lose their too big fella

      2. One of the whites made a comment that either the biggest and most succesful underground artists are either white or have white fan bases. LOL, that shows you the sphere of their understanding.

Underground artists like Talib Kweli, Jacka, LEP, & Slim Thug will continue to get our support irregardless of how many white fans they don’t have or if whites view them as being succesful.

Sadly the culture has been hijacked and it no longer represents the streets the struggle and the soul, now it’s just an outlet for outsiders to take up space and spots that the indigenous people’s should have.

      3. I see the idiotic racist nigga BruthaDee is making up lies because his phony “street” heroes with no respect for hip-hop and no talent are fading into irrelevance and are being replaced with talented artists who actually knows, respects, and loves the culture of hip-hop instead of just seeing it as some means of gaining a profit. And it’s not a race thing, it’s a talent thing and the so-called street rappers now suck. Hip-hop’s a universal thing; preventing other races from being a part of it is just gonna bring its demise.

      4. to the 4th anonymous, the 1st anonymous said “successful underground artists”. Who the fuck is Jacka or LEP?

    6. I just looked at iTunes and Knock Madness was released Nov. 24th. So Hopsin is doing pretty good. I believe that 4000 units may be based off Sunday through Tuesday.

    7. 4k, not a good debut for Hopsin on the charts. Maybe if he got 5 articles a day on this site like Eminem did leading up to its release he would have gotten a couple hundred thousand more sales.

      1. I highly doubt that HipHopDX can move a hundred thousand albums with five articles a day.

Tupac sold over 38 million albums in the US. Eminem sold over 35 million. Jay-Z over 29 million. And Outkast and Beastie Boys over 22 million.

Hate him or love him, Eminem sells records. Do you really think Marshall Marthers LP 2’s sales over Knock Madess is because of media articles? Do you really think Hopsin’s lack of ability to compete with Eminem or Jay-Z is due to lack of media coverage? I just don’t think you have the slightest grasp on the music industry.

      2. If you are suggesting that media coverage isn’t what gets those artists extra sales, than you are suggesting that Eminem and Jay Z’s music is is just that much better than Hopsin and all the other underground artists. If you know so much about the industry then tell me WHY it has nothing to do with media coverage. Don’t just tell me I’m wrong like some smug asshole.

    8. Eminem is a more polished artist, but MMLP2 is not 280X better than Knock Madness like these numbers suggest. What we have here is a case of Eminem reaching out to the younger pop audience who are less likely to illegally download free music while a majority of Hopsin listeners are 20-something college students who probably can’t even afford to buy his album. That and the millions of dollars that were spent promoting MMLP2. Numbers never lie, but they don’t always tell the whole story either.

      1. What we have year is an established popular artist out selling one who is past his peak of popularity (which wasn’t that popular to begin with). Nothing more or less. Also these are Hop’s sales after 2 days only. You’re right though, its not 280x better, I give Hop a 7.25-7.5 and Em a 8.25.

      2. I don’t think anyone with any critical thinking skills would associate sales with quality. Sales reflect popularity and money, not a whole lot else. You claim Eminem is reaching out to younger pop audience, while Hopsin to college students. That is the same demographic. College students ARE the young pop audience. Go to a college campus and kids you’ll see dorms plastered with Justin Beiber and Drake posters, people swearing by Macklemore’s message.

Now here is the real difference. Eminem is a mainstream entertainer of worldwide fame. He has sold more albums than any other Hip Hop artist worldwide. He has six multi-platinum records dating back to 1999.

Hopsin is releasing his second independent album to a small, but dedicated, fanbase. His first two albums did not chart due to small sales. In reality, Hopsin has a long way to go to compete with the top tier underground artists (Pharohe Monch, Tech N9ne, even Mac Miller) , let alone heavyweight mainstream ones such a Eminem.

      3. I’ve never known, heard, or seen a college kid who listens to Justin Bieber. High school kids, yeah, but not college.

      4. “I’ve never known, heard, or seen a college kid who listens to Justin Bieber. High school kids, yeah, but not college.”

Clearly you’ve never met a college girl. That’s the only shit that they listen to. And they are the only ones buying music. The guys are smart enough to uTorrent music.

      5. Teenage girls are the mainstream you dumb fucks. Who do you think listens to Katy Perry and Taylor Swift n shit? Those are the bitches that move albums and sell out stadiums. Eminem is the ONLY rap artists to sell like those bitches now because he puts bitches like that on his records.

      1. how much you think he was really gonna sell? hes basically unknown and apparently those sales arent from the whole week but 2 days

      2. Haha. 4k in 2 days = $20k/day in an independent rappers pocket. I don’t think he’ll be ending this career anytime soon.

      3. Are you the most retarded person ever? Yes. My proof is the 4000 albums he sold on the chart posted above and the fact that albums cost $10. Sure he has some bills to pay out of that money but that’s true for anyone earning a paycheck. But you wouldn’t know nothing about that with your broke ass.

      4. AND this was only after 2 DAYS! I would love to slap your fucking face right now. Ill just have your Mama do it for me.

      5. HHDX did a horrible job of reporting Hopsin’s sales. The album leaked, so Hopsin moved the release date on iTunes to Sunday night. So the 4,000 in sales is JUST from the late hours Sunday night. So technically, next weeks sales review will be the better overview of his first week sales.

    9. “I don’t think anyone with any critical thinking skills would associate sales with quality”

Most people don’t listen to music for quality though. Sales cut through the debates and let you know whose hacking it and whose not. Granted, there are alot of fickle people out there who don’t support the artists they say they do.

      1. “Sales cut through the debates and let you know whose hacking it and whose not”

aint this the same dude who shits on Kendrick Lamar every week for selling less than Drake but more than Ross? LOLOLOL

    10. “and khaled can keep crying over the fact he’s sold less than 46,000 in over a month with every big name in rap on his album!”

He makes his money off digital singles not albums. Do you intentionally close your mind to the truth?

      1. how can he make any real money if all his singles were produced by someone else and feature 3 or 4 rappers/singers? they all get a cut too you know.

    11. fuck HIPHOPDX for deleting my comment, Yo Gotti is a piece of shit, and new generation of street rappers suck hard. ignorant ass music, thats why nobody is buying their albums..

      1. No, that’s not why. It’s because their music SUCKS. Lack of good, hit singles is a problem. Lack of great production is a big problem nowadays.

    12. “When Khaled can get a successful album/single without any assistance from big names, THEN he can claim to be big”

He’s a hype man, not an artist. His only job is to gather the biggest names to jump on songs. Are you really cheering for a female artist whose sold 46,000? lol That is so pathetic she deserves a grammy for worst expectation artist.

      1. but shes basically a nobody. she had no promo and no radio play. for her to sell more than someone like DJ Khaled who had Drake, Nicki, Wayne, Ross, T.I., Diddy, Meek, etc, etc on his shit is pathetic!

      2. “His only job is to gather the biggest names to jump on songs.”

Then what’s the point of him releasing albums?

    13. #1. Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP 2 – 120,000 (1,123,000)
      #14. Drake – Nothing Was The Same – 30,400 (1,129,000)

      1,129,000 > 1,123,000

      Drake won

      YMCMB > Shady

      1. #135. Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP – 4,000 (10,777,000)
        #153. Eminem – The Eminem Show – 3,500 (10,279,000)

How do those two match up to Drake’s 1 million sold? Have Drake’s 3 albums combined sold 10 million yet?

      2. Haha! Some SERIOUS trolling going on here. Em’s album only been out for 3 weeks. Drake’s? It’s been months. Just wait until next week, where EM will pass Aubrey the pop singer.

    14. upto I saw the draft which said $4945, I have faith …that…my cousin was truly erning money part time on their computer.. there best friend had bean doing this 4 less than 17 months and recently repayed the morgage on there mini mansion and purchased a great Jaguar XJ. browse around this website… http://www.Fb39.com

while 50 sk will more then likely get pushed back for the 63rd time.. gunits nomore its not 2004 in this bitch its a new day move on.. oh yea, and game stole 50’s basketball rim!!!!!!!!!!!

    15. Looks like MMLP2 won’t go past 2 million. Will be interesting to see if Drake passes Em in popularity if Em doesn’t retire in the next few years.

    16. “Will be interesting to see if Drake passes Em in popularity if Em doesn’t retire in the next few years.”

And we can all sleep well at night knowing that THAT will never happen.

    17. Yo…Hopsin’s album just came out 2 days ago I believe. AND, it’s not even IN STORES YET. IT’s coming out IN STORES NEXT WEEK. You know he’s gonna sell a shitload more than that.

    18. I see dentalboy ain’t here. He’s probably crying in his room right now with Gerald consoling him, knowing his life was a waste.

      1. LOL coming from the guy whos wondering where he is!!! wow, why you check on people that are irrelevant? kinda makes you irrelevant ya know….

    19. DX, how about you dumbasses mention the fact that Hopsin’s album has only been out for 2 fuckin days?!?! JESUS. Do you know how many fans that dude has?? Watch and wait until next week and the week after ESPECIALLY, because his album comes out in stores NEXT Tuesday. He sold 4,000 in TWO DAYS. Mark my words.

      1. LOL @WTF, we gotta fucking Hopsin stan on our hands, chill the fuck out and listen to the music, who cares what he sells!!! OH WAIT,,,, LOL obvi this faggot stan does….smfh

      1. The albums sell just not alot. That’s beside the point. If only one song per album goes platinum or gold that project is considered a success.

      2. he must get all those features for free i dont see how else he could afford the beats and features with sales like that

      3. LOL yall are so fucking stupid!!! @ the last ANONYMOUS, its called a fucking music label and having budgets!!!!

LOLOLOLOLLLLLLL yall need to stick to just listening to DJ KHALEDS shitty ass music, because the business part yall are clueless LMAOOOOOO

    20. “Kendrick Lamar every week for selling less than Drake but more than Ross? LOLOLOL”

Kendrick was calling himself the King of New York. I’ve merely pointed out how weak his numbers are for a debut, and how Drake has passed him without even blinking. Ross may only be capable of going gold, but Kendrick would love to have Ross’s career and business/hustler mentality.

      1. 1. Many rappers think they’re the best. Why single out one?

        2. Weak numbers for a debut? 241K 1st week and more than a million total is strong numbers for a debut. You have French Montana selling 50K 1st week, less than 150K total, Meek selling 160K 1st week, around 300k total, and let’s not even bring up Wale, whose debut tanked horribly. If anything, Kendrick’s numbers are strong.

        3. Drake is a pop artist, so of course he’ll sell more than an actual hip-hop artist. You bringing up Drake has no validation to anything.

        4. No one wants Ross’ career. He can’t even go platinum and his labels are full of rejects that takes non-stop Ls.

      2. If you think Kendrick’s numbers are weak, then you’re on crack, Molly, and meth combined. Kendrick’s album sold more than the recent albums from Nicki Minaj, French Montana, Ace Hood, Tyga, and everyone on MMG.

      3. I don’t Think Kendrick’s numbers are weak for a debut in this present climate, but the second guy has some obvious mental illness, calling a Gold artists like Wale a “reject” is asinine especially on the eve of his single “Bad” going Platinum…..then the nerd loses all credibility by insinuating that no label wanted Meek ‘Mill.

        What a clown.

The Black Hipster Kendrick Lamar was bound to have a certain level of success just like the other artists that Dr Dre has executive produced, artists like Snoop, Eminem, 50Cent and Game,

95% of the rappers in the game would love to have Ross career, he’s a CEO of his own label with 4 Gold albums and has made the Forbes list 5 years in a row but more importantly he’s done records with true legends like Nas, G Rap, JayZ, Kiss, Carey, Bun B, Badu, and people your kind has never heard of.

    21. “Haha. 4k in 2 days = $20k/day in an independent rappers pocket”

That gets cut up into pieces, so in reality he’s probably pocketing a few thousand.

      1. LOL @JRich comment. @Anon, stfu and stop acting like HOPSINS MANAGER….smh, yall are the worst, just enjoy the fucking music you stan

    22. Many young children seem to have a fetish with bashing Khaled which we can only assume can be attributed to the past beef Khaled had with 50-Cent and the adoration 50-Cent gets from children online.

I think normal people are more apt to congratulate Khaled on his success at putting together hit songs as a DJ instead of denigrating him because he didnt sell as many albums as Macklemore.

      1. Maybe he needs a more humble approach, is not like he promoted himself as an underdog, or like if he actually cared about the music so of course people are gonna celebrate his flop.

    23. HipHopDX’s Most Wanted Trolls:

      dentaldamboy
      Fresh 2 Def
      Quote-Man
      BruthaDee
all of the Drake stans (Drake runs rap, Drake Till Infinity, OVO, Champagne Papi Life, etc.)
      The Ja Rule fanboy

      1. If you don’t get it then perhaps your new. I completely agree with dude. Those are the biggest fuck boys on this site.

    24. “So in reality you have no idea”

The reality is Hopsin sold 4,000. Why would anyone believe he’s caking up over that? Macklemore actually had to do numbers week after week, for months to start seeing the real money, but clearly Hopsin is the exception. Idiots….

      1. Do the math – he’s 100% independent… that’s all his cash.

Most rappers – i.e Drake are getting $1/2 per album sold.

Thats $110,000 – Hopsin is on $36,000 from $8/$9 on 4000 – you get it??

    25. “Many rappers think they’re the best. Why single out one?”

Cause unlike most boasts, Kendrick’s was talked about everywhere. That’s why big ears gets singled out.

      1. Serious question: If Drake did that Control verse instead of Kendrick, claimed to be the KONY, name-dropped his peers, and did EVERYTHING Kendrick has done, would you criticize him the same way you do Kendrick or would you act like a groupie and defend his actions as genius?

    26. “Weak numbers for a debut? 241K 1st week and more than a million total is strong numbers for a debut”

Did I stutter groupie? Took him 7 months to do what Drake did in a month and a half. That’s to be expected. Who else outsold him? Macklemore. Eminem. Look back at all the major debuts of past rappers and most were doing 2-3x platinum. You literally weren’t worth the diamonds in your fake chain if you weren’t at least doing 2 mill. You bring up Wale like he’s homeless. Dude makes $50k a night. French Montana had a platinum single. Don’t cry for those fools, homie.

      1. Mackelmore is 75% independent –

He’s caking $6/7 a album. Plus the single money is crazy….

Drake is getting rapped at .5 points – so $1/$2 a album after production cost are paid back

(no doubt 40 charges extra and pays Drake back some bread lol)

      2. “Took him 7 months to do what Drake did in a month and a half. That’s to be expected.”

Again, Drake’s a pop artist, and pop artists usually sell more than hip-hop artists.

“Who else outsold him? Macklemore. Eminem.”

Just two rappers, one a legend and the other had huge hit singles that blew up this year.

“Look back at all the major debuts of past rappers and most were doing 2-3x platinum. You literally weren’t worth the diamonds in your fake chain if you weren’t at least doing 2 mill.”

That’s the problem with your argument. You bring up PAST rappers. Let’s talk about the major debuts of rappers out NOW and most of them never sold as much as Kendrick did.

“You bring up Wale like he’s homeless. Dude makes $50k a night. French Montana had a platinum single.”

Don’t kid yourself, you fucking cheerleader. Wale ain’t making that much. And French’s puny platinum single (which only happened because Wayne and Drake were on it) doesn’t mean anything, especially when other rappers have platinum singles, including Kendrick.

      3. Quote-man; constantly contradicting himself to make his favorite rappers look good and his least favorites look bad with complete bias.

    27. “Drake is a pop artist, so of course he’ll sell more than an actual hip-hop artist. You bringing up Drake has no validation to anything”

That’s funny. The Source, XXL, and everybody else on this planet call him a rapper. Just because your manhood is bothered by a dude singing doesn’t mean he’s not hip hop.

      1. And those people don’t know hip-hop, which Drake is the farthest thing from. He’s as hip-hop as Flo Rida and Pitbull.

    28. “Kendrick’s album sold more than the recent albums from Nicki Minaj, French Montana, Ace Hood, Tyga, and everyone on MMG”

NM sold more copies than Kendrick last year. That’s fact, tiny. And you can continue listing Ace Hood and Tyga until the end of time. At least Ace has albums under his belt. His street cred scares a little softie like Kendrick who can’t even stand up to his own boss.

      1. Are you kidding me? Nicki’s album didn’t even sell platinum. What you said wasn’t a fact at all. And every album Ace put out flopped. Street cred? What street cred? That nigga’s a phony like Ross and Plies. And, no. Kendrick ain’t soft, that’s your boy Drake.

    29. “he must get all those features for free i dont see how else he could afford the beats and features with sales like that”

I realize you have down syndrome, so I’ll try and make this quick and painless. Khaled works for a label that is worth over a billion dollars. Khaled isn’t personally shelling out for these artists. His job is to get them on songs which he does and which often go platinum or gold. There’s also digital sales. Ringtones. Touring. Stop thinking about the music industry as this little lemonade stand, and start looking at the bigger picture. 12 million singles sold. I don’t care who you are. That’s impressive.

    30. Damn Eminem only been out for two weeks with mmlp2 and he already passed up jay-z and Kendrick Lamar in sales. It took jay-z a month to go plat. It took Kendrick several months to go plat. It only took Eminem 2 weeks. He use to be able to go plat the first week but that was when he was at his best. The fact of the matter is it doesn’t matter what eminem comes out with he will always have multi platinum albums. Even Relapse sold over 2 million copies domestically. Relapse was garbage. Even Recovery and MMLP2 from what I understand aren’t nothing compared to his first three albums and he still can live off his past enough to sell multi platinum albums at a point in time where going gold is now considered a good achievement. Im black and even I am abl eto admit that eminem must have struck a cord with alot of people in order to keep doint this repeatedly. People say it’s because he’s white that he sales so much, but what about the influx of other white rappers that are out? Why aren’t they selling(except Macklemore)? It has to be because of what he did in the past and or just the name… Eminem. He’s not what he use to be but I guess his impact keeps him afloat enough to be as relevant now as he was in the 90’s with SSLP. Thats amazing.

    31. Hopsin. $8 x $4000 – $32,000 – not bad.

Plus thats touring and merch money to invest.

These young independent guys are doing the right way.

    32. DMX went 5x platinum off his first album. Eminem 3x platinum. 50 Cent 8x platinum. Nelly 8x platinum. Where are you King Kendrick? You mean to tell me with a Dre co-sign, and a major label behind you, the best you can do is under 1.1 mill? Rookie.

      1. Those guys released their albums back when people actually went to stores and bought albums. This is a new age where people download shit off the internet. 1.1 million for a major label debut now is great.

      2. The Game killed gunit clothing and the label. Banks and yayo both get got dropped from interscope and are crackheads now who cant sell past 40k,on the same label and game JesusPiece is a CLASSIC while 50 sk will more then likely get pushed back for the 63rd time.. gunits nomore its not 2004 in this bitch its a new day move on.. oh yea, and game stole 50’s basketball rim!!!!!

    33. TRUE STORI:

      Drake: Muhfuckas neva luved us!

      Mom: I luv you

      Drake: On mi wurst beehavior

      Mom: Wat?

Drake: Bich betta hav mi money like am ODB!

      Mom: Drake, U ar grounded

      Drake: Fuk

      Comment if you liked.

    34. “He’s caking $6/7 a album. Plus the single money is crazy”

Good for him, cause he’s going to need it once he reappears and can’t write a hit song to save his life. Drake makes plenty off guest verses, and can still make millions despite his bosses getting chunks of his sales. You act like that’s unheard of. Macklemore’s afraid to go to a major cause they wouldn’t put out his cupcake music.

      1. Are you joking about Macklemore? He ain’t afraid of going to a major. Why would he go to a major label where he’ll get screwed over and turned into an industry product when he’s making more money independently than many rappers on a major? You are an ass-backwards thinker. Also:

“once he reappears and can’t write a hit song to save his life”

Yeah, keep dreaming because your hate won’t make that happen for real.

    35. Rick Ross might NEVER have the success of EM or 50and definitely is NOT lyrically a better artist than EMTeflon Don sure as hell was better than RELAPSE, Before I self Destruct, Curtis, ENCORE.man I swear everything FIF and EM have done on their past few albums was garbage compared to Ross

Say what you want to about him bein fake or wuteverin the end its all about the quality of musicand the quality of ROSS’ shit cannot be denied!

    36. “Do the math – he’s 100% independent… that’s all his cash”

The only way being independent is profitable is if you’re moving units. Macklemore is the one exception out of thousands who make peanuts because their profits often get eaten up by their expenses because guess what, genius. Everything comes out their pocket. The only other exception would be Mac Miller and that’s more so because he has company sponsors that net him most of that money. It says something about Drake’s popularity when he can be worth $30 million despite having to shell out to his bosses. The up side, he’s building a career while Macklemore can thank his lucky stars for allowing him fifteen minutes of geeky fame.

      1. Wrong bro.

Indie is more proftable if you are touring and own the rights.

Drake owns no touring rights, – he’s 360’d at Cash Money for 7 albums. LOL

      1. Wayne is a true blood gang member and I KNOW you fuckboys will say he isn’t.

Go to LA and ask The Game that and he’ll slap the shit outta u for even questioning Waynes Blood Gang legitimacy.

Lil Wayne is the KIGN of HIP HOP!

      2. Wayne goes to LA and parties with The Game (a blood gang member)and a whole bunch of Blood gang members. Dont believe me? Look it up on YouTube. HAHAHA I keep beating a dead horse.

      3. Wayne boasts about his Blood Gang ties since 500 Degreez and he hasnt been checked or murked because he is RESPECTED in the Blood Gang commmunity.

        YMCMB!

    38. Hip Hop DX …The home of angry white keyboard warriors who hate black people but feel torn because they kind of like hip hop but just wish it wasn’t so damn black

      Thank god for macklemore

    39. Women consistently fuck up all forms of music, not just hip hop.

Look at the people who get shine now? Drake? Lil Wayne? Justin Bieber? 1D? I mean, you could virtually name any really big artist who’s doing big numbers and they have a significant female fanbase. Because women are idiots and only just by what they find attractive, not actual talent. Even soulja boy is still around because of his female fanbase. You’ll never see a dude buy a chicks album just because he finds her attractive, but women do this type of shit all the time. Ban woman from music, and you’ve fixed a good chunk of the issue!!!!!!!!!

    40. In a Freestyle Battle 2Pac>>>>> Eminem

Energy and passion on the mic 2pac>>>>>>. EM

His 1st verse on DEAR MAMA>>>> any Eminem verse

      2pacs single >>>>>> ems singles

2pac impact on the game >>>>>>> Eminem impact

      1. Em’s lyricism >
        Em’s flow>
        Em’s sales>
but you had a few valid points, they’re both dope, like enjoyed MMLPII

    41. To the Eminem fans who say niggas is scared to feature him on songs. Bad vs Evil Royce was pretty much bodying Em on every song. Keep it real you have to be a big fan to not realize how much this dude fell off. And his new album sounds like the crap he has been producing himself lately…..

      1. You gotta be a fan to say Royce wasn’t bodying Em. Let me not say he was bodying Em, But his verses where way better in my opinion. Bodying such a harsh word. Its sort of like how Nas gassed niggas to think Em completely Bodied Jigga. Sure Em had better verses on Renegade but he didn’t completely body Jay, his verse was just better. People forget the fact that Renegade is more of Eminem style then Jay-Z anyway.

Bottom Line, Royce was bodying “Bad meets Evil” and killed Em on mostly every track the sameway Em killed Jigga on Renegades. Its not a big deal cause Royce is still trying to get on and Em been there and done. Basically Royce still spit like he is hungry and Em spit like he already ate.

      2. @Truth, that’s the truth. It was an Em production and thus an Em song in real terms. I’ve always said Jay’s verse was also good. Plus very few people, perhaps only Eminem could have done better than Jay Z in that song. It was Em’s moment of magic.

      3. Jay’s first verse is a masterpiece

“Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?” One of his most memorable lines is from that verse

Jay was not bodied. They both brought their absolute best to that track.

      4. to this nigga @Truth u gotta to be a fuckin idiot to say such thing…Em didnt wrote shit…Royce is a real MC one of the best out there…a Top5 dead/alive nigga u lost ur shit go check his discography out and then say shit like that

    42. “The only way being independent is profitable is if you’re moving units”

^ I see the pussy has been all up in here talking that bullsh*t today

Just read his comments, he knows everything about everybody and he’s always right. Did you ask him how he knows what Wale pulls in when he doesn’t know Wale? How about his “theory” about an independent artist, but an indie like E-40 who owns businesses and can make $100k in a week or Jim Jones, who made millions on an indie label and sold minimal copies, or even Nipsey Hussle, who cleared $100k selling 1000 copies independently and Jay Z buying 100 within 24 hours exist.

Since he knows so much about every rapper’s finances, ask him about contracts. Who has a 360 deal Quote-Man? What are the mechanical rates and publishing percentages Quote-Man? Is it a P & D deal Quote-Man? What’s the length of the deal Quote-Man? What are the budgets and costs of the album so you know when you see the Wednesday numbers you and only YOU, know who’s banking or not Quote-Man?

That’s when you’ll see him bitch up, toss some lame insults at you whilst thinking he’s above you, yet he’s looking like the consummate jackass babbling and rambling on all along.

Told y’all that person has some serious mental and social issues.
But Quote-Man is always right, even when the information I just typed has been on the same site Quote-Man uses to show us how omnipotent he is, HHDX.

      1. “Anonymous:

Quote-man; constantly contradicting himself to make his favorite rappers look good and his least favorites look bad with complete bias.”

^ this says it all, another person beyond me calling BS

Guy feeds off of naivety, only sick minded people do that. Wise, intelligent, experienced critical thinkers compare notes.

He is named QUOTE man, not WISE man. And he ain’t trolling, read the nose-in-the-air “insults”.

I keep my foot on his neck to show the true nature of him, a deceiver.

      2. E-40 is your best example? lol We all know he’s a businessman who releases albums because he can, not because he’s making millions off them which he’s not. You fuck boys must not know how to utilize the internet because most of this info is at your finger tips. Jim Jones is your next best example? The same nigga whose now on VH-1 lol He had a good thing back in the day when Dipset and solo albums actually saw favorable release dates mainly because downloading for free motherfuckers were paying for albums instead of stealing them. Do I need to go on, or can you just slither away with some shred of dignity and self respect left.

      3. A good example of Quote bitch being a bitch nigga not saying anything of relevance. No one can take this guy seriously because he fails at life.

    43. I only have one question
Where the hell did most of you learn to write? 90% of the people who post on this site have absolutely no concept of writing in a lucid and direct manner. Have you ever thought about using commas, periods, question marks, or any of the other syntax and grammar tools that have been adopted by the english language to help articulate your mindless rhetoric and beefs?

      Heres a suggestion
If you really want someone to get your point, do not write in your street slang. It isnt near as effective, and it is very hard for the reader to comprehend (not that most of you really have anything important to say anyways).

You are disgracing yourselves and the people who helped raise and mold you. You are disgracing the hip hopsters you are trying to defend by writing things that dont convey a real messagejust like every one of Chingys songs. hahaha

      Final thought
Use some sense when you write; you may just school some niggas.

yes I am an avid hip-hop listener and have been for many years. I have seen it evolve into the crap we see from most artists today. Test my knowledge if you must.

    44. Drake is the leader of hiphop this year. He sold almost 700k copies. Drake keeps it real and father son kissing isn’t gay.

      1. Both wrong. Best selling hip hip this year was Jay Z. Eminem’s beats are too rock and pop, Drake is R n B. Only Jay Z has proper hip hop beats.

    45. say what u say…. name another hip hop artist (shoot name 2-3 music artists in general) from the 1992 era thats does it like doggy dogg does…..u cant name many if any. dude is like the only one that can flip it shake it n bake it sophmore jinx it and still be in demand dropping #1 albums (1st 3 where #1 debuts, all others top 10) all platinum plus with or with out dre. from the top of my head who else has at least 2 to 3 hot radio spins year after year after year…..who??? snoop who else ……..pretty much every year since 92 to 06 (expept for 97 death row drama) and is this album as good as doggystyle NO….. but everytime dude drops (its always the same reviews best since doggystyle)…..thats why im always bumpin snoops sh!t its hot ……if not the whole album ….more than half of it is…..(most non dre affiliated albums only got 3 hot tracks tops )…..so thats that shit…..keep em comming!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    46. Hopsin deserves more sales. Its funny how his fanbase worships him yet they all torrent or download his album for free

      1. So true.. unlike Hopsin, Tyler has a LOYAL fanbase and sold an amazing 90k 1st week with Wolf, more than a lot of newer artists!

        #OF!!

    47. “And those people don’t know hip-hop”

But your downloading everything for free ass does? Don’t make me laugh fuck boy.

    48. “Let’s talk about the major debuts of rappers out NOW and most of them never sold as much as Kendrick did”

That’s only because most people steal music and you know it. It’s not an even enough playing field to say where Kendrick is right now. Even if Drake is his only competition, that’s still double platinum status to contend with there.

      1. Now you’re just making nonsensical excuses. You’re just rambling about bullshit because you know I’m right. Kendrick’s debut basically outsold most other rappers’ debuts and don’t even bring up Drake because this isn’t about him at all. You have nothing, so stop the hate and take a seat.

    49. “If Drake did that Control verse instead of Kendrick”

Depends on what he said and who he said it about. I think he should have said something to Common, but he let his success do his talking for him which was a better strategy.

      1. Correct, it’s #1 in 2012, though the way Kendrick keeps selling, in the long run he still has a chance of regaining the spot 🙂

In 2013 there will be no competition, Eminem will surpass Drake next week, and he almost did it this week, just 6000 copies behind 😉

      1. Rick Ross is top 10 right now

Anyone that hates him because hes fake (hes not, mind you) is a dumbass. Its the most tired and false excuse. And the people the claim hes fake just point to the CO pic. They have no other evidence. As IF that photo proves anything. All it proves is that he was a CO. It doesnt prove that he didnt slang. Plus anyone that know anything knows that COs are dirty. Its only the 16 y/o white suburban kids that claim Ross fake. REAL NIGGAZ fuck tha Bawse.

If you dont like him for his music, its fair because peoples tastes are different.

But the all his songs sound the same argument is tired as well.

First, that argument can be used for almost any rapper.
Secondly, does Sixteen sound like BMF? Does Free Mason sound like Im Not A Star? Does 911 sound like Amsterdam? Does Diced Pineapples sound like Fuck Em? Nope, because Rawse is the king of diversity.

        Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!

    50. I know there are a lot of whiteboy haters out there but have you heard Rap God? I mean, who goes at it like that? 6 mins of just straight going at you? Em is still doing it, still selling and still saying shit I can’t believe hasn’t already been said. Numbers don’t lie, the kid is at least in everyone’s top 5, that is if you aren’t a racist hater!

    51. This is fukn retarded, Knock Madness has only been out a couple of days????? Release was 25th. Of course it hasnt sold much

    52. I didn’t buy eminems album cause he had 5 bonus tracks where he could of put anyone he wanted give them sum shine or just for nostalgic reasons like Obie Trice Cashis D-12 Slaughterhouse Yelawolf but he aint do shit which to me shows how much he is being told what to put out by this pop machine manufacturing his shit

      1. have a cry. most people think MMLP2 is dope, deal with it

eminem’s fans are not just old school hip hop fanatics. that’s not what everyone wants to hear all the time.

      2. Most the beats were shit n why’s he trying to fit as many words as possible into every line fuckin rappity rap bullshit

    53. eminem is a pop star he makes pop music he doesnt even make a complete hiphop album like drake did. Drake didnt need features from rihanna skyler grey and other pop artists to sell big he did it all by himself. Eminem needed to make a ton of pop singles and songs with annoying pop accents to sell. Drake did those big numbers all by himself while eminem didnt.

DRAKE IS STILL THE KING OF THIS RAP SHIT. ONCE THE OLD GEEZER EMINEM THE WASHED UP POPSTAR RETIRES DRAKE WILL BE KING OF RAP FOR EVER. DRAKE WILL PUT UP THE BIGGEST NUMBERS AND IT WONT EVEN BE DEBATED WHO THE FACE OF RAP IS.

      1. Drake making a complete hip-hop album? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        There’s nothing hip-hop about Drake’s albums, they’re filled with R&B/pop bullshit. Eminem’s album is more hip-hop than Drake’s.

      2. “Drake making a complete hip-hop album? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

        Exactly.

If he thinks Drake makes hip hop. He’s a zombie in the machine.

    54. Webbie’s new album just came out and sold 11,918 first week why they aint mention him but they put up all these niccas who sold less?

    55. Pretty sad that after Bun’s last album which was very good but not a classic like the sauce tried to say in order to generate magazine sales, that he can’t out sell an album that is 13 years old.

    56. …are intense. He’s only been in the spotlight since like 2010 and everyone is acting like he’s an already tried and true legend. I’ll admit he has some bars, and has made a handful of good songs but my god, get off his dick. He literally had to make a song to tell you all to stop riding his dick so hard.

He’s got a long way to go before he has proven himself to be more than a trendy gimmick. Gazing at the Moonlight was like 6/10, Raw 8/10, and Knock Madness 7/10. The guy doesn’t even have a classic yet. Jesus.

      1. nope billboard calculate weekly sales u liar. if it wasn’t week sales it will be updated to the next week.

      1. Yo, how you create this culture? just cause you’re black you think you can claim responsibility for everything all black people have ever done? Lemme guess, you responsible for the Civil Rights Movement too?

      2. Black struggle created the spiritual upliftment known as Hip Hop culture of which rap music is a part of but it’s a damn shame that same music is being used by white-owned corporations to oppress the very same group of people it once uplifted. Open your third eye, don’t be a sheep.

    57. All you new hip-hop fans (15-25 yr olds) have horrible attitudes about life and music. You don’t even discuss the music like we did back in the day when Run DMC, Nas, Wu-Tang, Rakim, Biggy, Pac, etc. was running the game.

ALL you guys do is have your little online race wars and cry about Eminem vs whoever or Jay-Z is illuminate or who’s “real” or not. Worst of all you think there is one way to rap or one style to floss.

You guys are too myopic, boring and ignorant to call yourselves “hip-hop” fans. It was never like this in the 80’s and 90’s. Black and White kids grouped up and pushed for better race relations. We were too smart to suck on the FOX news or CNN teat.

This is what’s frustrating the pioneers of rap music and new well rounded rap artist. You FANS, YOU FANS, have lost ALL perspective.

    58. Hopsin only did 4,000 units?!? Dame must be at home shaking his head while typing #stillmovin on the FV Facebook page, well along with some other quote that he thinks will power his ego a bit more and allow him to feel like he administered change in many young fan minds. This sounds deep and a hint that I don’t like Dame, but in fact, he is just that simple to understand for real. Lol

    59. Macklemore weak, but he made 9 mill..respect. Ems new album is trash, deal with it crossover pop, but dude still went platinum..respect. Drake cd rnb, ok. But its unique, and sold over a mill..respect. Nothing changes, but shit evolves keep it real.

    60. “Kendrick’s debut basically outsold most other rappers’ debuts and don’t even bring up Drake because this isn’t about him at all”

For the span of a few measly months when there were not many notable albums released. Wow! Stop honoring this man like he’s your father. His hype died. Accept it and be gone troll bait.

      1. his hyped died? LOL his album still selling 4 or 5k a week 14 months later….. who elses major label debut from the last few years is doing that?

    61. “Indie is more proftable if you are touring and own the rights”

Most indie artists don’t own anything, dunce boy. For every Macklemore, there are thousands more who are signed to small, indie labels, push next to no units, and end of broke cause they can’t afford to even go on tour, and when they do it’s small little joints where they make peanuts. Drake is making millions and can more than afford to pay his bosses what is owed to them. The major label system works if you’re marketable. Someone with your second grade education should be able to understand that.

    62. “Are you kidding me? Nicki’s album didn’t even sell platinum”

For the week ending April 10, 2012, the album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 253,000 copies in its first week.[40] This marked Minaj’s second number-one album in that country following her last studio album Pink Friday, which peaked at number one in February 2011. On June 22, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, for shipments of at least one million copies in the US.[41] The album sold 785,000 copies in 2012 in the US,[42] making it the best selling rap album of 2012.

      Game over.

      1. theres a difference between shipped and sold. we’ve been through this remember when you were shitting on kendrick for not selling a million?

nickis last album has yet to cross the million sold mark

    63. “And every album Ace put out flopped. Street cred? What street cred?

Oh so Kendrick’s Mr. street, but Ace Hood is a phony? lol At least Ace Hood doesn’t duck and scream when the bullets start flying like Kendrick does.

      1. Who is K. Dot? A young nigga from Compton
On the curb writing raps next to a gun shot
On the corners where the gangsters and the killers dwell
The fraudulent tender scars that get unveiled
Everyone I knew was either crip or piru
Cousins in elementary, relatives in high school
With that being said, each one of their rivals
Was aiming something at my head, I needed survival
Got jumped, got jacked, shot at, shot back
And I don’t even push a line, I’m just tryna push these rhymes
In the midst of staying neutral and discrete
My momma said you’re judged by the company you keep
But what you can consider, that if it goes down
They’ll kill you if you kill me, it gets deep nigga
So if you ask what I’m doing
I’m tryna duck the influence of my city that’s blue-and,.. real talk, and

This is why they fuck with me (real talk nigga, believe it)
This is why they fuck with me (do what I do, y’know?)
I’m no gangster, no killer, I’m just your average Joe (know that)
But one thing you should consider, I’m the realest you know

Yeah, and he and Meek were just photographed together a few weeks back. The only one getting caught up in his feelings is…Drake. I know, it’s hard to believe that Drake got emotional.

    65. “theres a difference between shipped and sold”

Shipped… Sold… Returned to a bargain bin… Fact remains NM sold more than Kendrick in 2012. Numerous sites prove this, so there’s no need to take it personal. It’s just the way it is.

      1. but kendrick kept selling and passed the million mark and is still selling, nicking aint sold 900k yet

“NICKI MINAJ – Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded : 885,000”

      2. GKMC was released at the end of October 2012, Nicki’s album came out 6 months earlier in April! Of course a pop star sold more records in 8 months than Kendrick did in 2!

He still outsold her at the end and put out the better album that will still be played 10 years from now.
