Hip Hop Album Sales: DJ Khaled’s “Grateful” Still #1, Jay-Z’s “4:44” Didn’t Chart Despite Going Platinum

DJ Khaled should be feeling, ahem, grateful that his 10th studio LP, Grateful, has landed atop the Billboard Top 200 chart for the second week in a row for the week ending July 6. Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. holds the third spot, also for the second week in a row, with 2 Chainz and Drake holding on in the Top 10 with the Migos and Future enjoying a slight bump in sales. Vince Staples’ Big Fish Theory had a strong debut last week at #16 but took a mighty plunge to #67 in its second week on the Top 200 and TDE songstress SZA saw an 11 percent dip in sales for her CTRL album.

JAY-Z’s 4:44, which has dominated the conversation ever since its release, is noticeably absent despite going platinum. Hov’s new LP is missing from the chart because Tidal did not report any of its streaming numbers to Nielsen Music. The situation mirrors Kanye West’s 2016 album The Life of Pablo, which also did not chart in its first week due to Tidal’s refusal to report its streams.

DJ Khaled’s Grateful Keeps #1 Spot

Although DJ Khaled’s Grateful had a dip in streams, pure album sales, and total album equivalent units sold, the impressive 63,406,062 streams coupled with 15,633 album sales and total equivalent units of 65,975 just edged out Calvin Harris’ #2 debut of his latest project, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1.

Kendrick Lamar Holds Steady At #3, 2 Chainz and Drake Stay Top 10

While Drake’s More Life continues its chart dominance by remaining in the Top 10, a slight dip in sales this week could push it out of that coveted range soon as the record sits at #9, dropping one spot. Tity Boi’s latest opus, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, also dropped one spot to #6.

Post Malone, SZA, Future, and Migos Stay Top 20 With It

Post Malone’s Stoney has enjoyed a strong 30 weeks on the Top 200, boosted by his Quavo-assisted smash, “Congratulations.” The album now sits at #12, dropping one spot. SZA’s CTRL also dropped a slot to #13, while Future’s self-titled album goes up a level to #19. Migos keeps showing incredible staying power as Culture also goes up a spot to #14.

As mentioned previously, the talented Vince Staples’ Big Fish Theory sits at #67 due to an epic 65 percent drop in sales. But don’t count out the young Long Beach rapper yet as fans are still getting familiar with his sound.

    1. From a music lovers ear…bone thugs NEW WAVES ALBUM is hottee than khaleds with out question..i hate these young motherfuckers

      1. You been wilding homie lol but I do agree with you tho, that change the story video just dropped today, hopefully their will be a new waves 2 or just another Krayzie and bizzy duo album

    2. You dumbos still aren’t paying attention? Jay doesn’t care about THEIR numbers. Did you even listen to the album? How much do you think he made with Sprint? TIDAL?tours? While you dummies are on the internet collecting checks.

      1. Charlie Murphy Voice WRONG WRONG, he does care that’s why he’s not reporting them he doesn’t want it to be considered a flop if the numbers aren’t high. Which when your rich you shouldn’t care, but some of the wealthiest most popular people are also extremely
        insecure.

        1. Hence why most of his subject matter in his songs are bragging about how much money he got

      2. Tidal’s been in the red. That Sprint money probably already burned through. Kanye can’t even get his measly $3 million.

Jay the only one that can start a company, and say it’s for the Artists and by the Artists…then turn around and sell 1/3 of it back to a corporation, and we still turn around and say its a success. Wasn’t that the whole point of starting Tidal….to give the artist the control?

      3. Who gives an F about how much money Jay Z has. Hip Hip started in the South Bronx, not on Wall Street. Hip Hop was a reaction of the ghetto to predatory capitalism, the same predatory capitalism Jay Z participates. Only Jay Z dickriders care about how much money he has. Hell he was bragging about the money he had on Reasonable Doubt when he was broke and living off of Biggs and Dame Dash’s hustle.

    3. So what about bone thugs ? New waves is straight dope and better than those albums !! Fuck this shit

    4. Question for HipHopDX: Why is Calvin Harris’ “Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1” not considered an R&B/Rap album? The lineup is almost as good as Khaled’s album and features Frank Ocean, Migos, Future, Nicki Minaj, Young Thug, Pharrell, Big Sean, Lil Yachty, ScHoolboy Q, Travis Scott, Snoop Dogg and more.

That sounds like a hip-hip album to me! Am I wrong?!?!?!

      1. It sounds for a desperate talentless fuck just like dj khaled who has a little money to pay off artists have dirt on them or just called in ONE time favors and now think there “artists themselfs

    5. Why do they even say “his album” it should be lil wayne nicki minaj drake future big sean rhianna bryson tiller and 2 chainz FEAUTURING dj khaled considering there the ones who are responsible for the albums end product not just some fat arab who likes to scream alot

        1. But if you just did a dj khaled album no features hes got NOTHING and his live sets are garbage so wonder what kinda ghost mixer hes got working for him? Not to mention if he did a album without 10+ platinum selling artists he wouldnt have shit either the guys literaly just a fat 500 lb fucking parasite

    6. platinum without billboard? how? why? ooooh yes is because jay z is buying plaques and pretending he deserve them

        1. because he made the deal with sprint, this was not a surprise, obviously he put that in the contract

    7. I WON THE SUPER BOWL…You can read right? Tidal didn’t report/submit the streaming numbers to billboard..u dumb fuck…lol..yet ur smart enough to create that stooped ass name..lol..smart dummies are upon us people!!

    8. Jay z cant even go gold unless he buys his own albums or gets a drake feature. No1 is checking for.music from this overeated washed up peice of camel shit.

    9. 4:44 didn’t chart because Jay used the phone company buying a milli gimmick he used on Magna Carter Holy Crap This Cash Grab Sucks album.
