Common’s Nobody’s Smiling Debuts At #6
Common’s Nobody’s Smiling debuted on the charts this week at #6. The album sold 24,537 copies in its first week of availability. Recently, Common spoke about this album and what it sounds like to him. “It don’t sound like anything I’ve ever done,” he said, “but I do feel like it’s a great piece of art.” The album’s title, Nobody’s Smiling, carries particular significance for the Chicagoan. “I’m not happy we losing people,” Com recently said. “People getting shot over things that ain’t even necessary. I can’t even act like I know every situation, why it happens, but some of it… it’s become part of… away of life. People don’t value life as much as we can, as much as we should.” Nobody’s Smiling earned a 4.5 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review.
Trey Songz’s Trigga Falls To #13
Trey Songz’s Trigga continues its success in the chart’s Top 15, this week arriving at #13. This is a drop out of the Top 10 for the R&B singer, who was in the #9 slot last week. The album sold 15,763 units, a 31 percent drop in sales from the 22,840 it sold last week. Overall, this means Trigga has sold 177,496 copies in this four weeks of availability. The album has provided the crooner with some favorable reviews. Recently, the project earned a 4 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review, which refers to some cuts on the album as “wild, yet well-delivered.”
Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic Jumps Back Into Top 20
It has been 14 weeks on the chart for Iggy Azalea and the Australian rapper has regained success in the Top 20 with The New Classic. This week, Iggy’s debut album arrives at #18, a jump from last week’s #22 placement. Despite the gains on the chart position, Iggy’s The New Classic experienced a 10 percent dip in sales, going from 13,326 last week to 11,957 this week. Overall, in its 14 weeks, The New Classic has sold 258,386 units. The New Classic earned a 2.5 out of 5 rating in its HipHopDX review when it was released.

It was never meant to be corporate. Back in the late 80’s and 90’s if you were alive you’ll remember hip-hop/rap was a bad word. While there were the Master P’s and Juvenile’s there was also that political side of hip-hop with Public Enemy or even NWA. Either way the gangster hip-hop nor the conscious hip-hop was never meant to become the biggest genre in the US. When it did in the 2000’s we didn’t know what to do with it so it was killed by the obsession with money and materialistic items. Recession hit and nobody wanted to hear that bullshit yet rapper’s forgot the roots and the struggle. The fans, artists, labels, radios etc all all to blame. We got the opportunity to bring hip-hop to a bigger scale and fucked it up by preaching greed and vanity. People don’t wanna hear that shit. That’s why Kendrick is so celebrated because it’s so rare that someone with that mindset makes it. My 2 cents at least

People are just not buying records anymore, even pharrell who had the biggest hit of the year is not doing huge numbers. He is getting royalties and some people that just bought the one song but still not huge numbers. Between internet reviews, free downloads and free listens people hear it a time or 2 and decide not to buy. I will take the schoolboy q record for example when you bought it for $10-$15, what did you get out of it? 2 spins, maybe 3 or 4 if you were really committed to it. MMLP 2 is kind of the same thing, it won’t be like any of his first few albums where years later you decide to listen to it once in awhile. People just don’t want to waste money on the lazy approach of the music industry anymore.
