Grandmaster Flash Says He’s Heard Dr. Dre’s Next Project + It Will ‘Change The Game’

Legends hanging out with legends will never fail to attract attention. So when pioneering turntablist Grandmaster Flash linked with celebrated Hip Hop producer Dr. Dre in Los Angeles over the weekend, naturally it piqued some interest.

On Sunday (August 1), Grandmaster Flash shared a photo of himself with Dr. Dre to the official Furious 5 Instagram account and revealed he’d been kicking it at the Beats By Dre mogul’s house following a DiscOasis event with music icon Nile Rodgers. Flash also revealed Dre played him a project that will apparently have an asteroid-sized impact on the culture.

“GRANDMASTER FLASH & DR. DRE,” he wrote in the caption. “Here in LA doing the Disco Oasis with Nile Rogers tonite, I get a call from one of my heroes he invites me to the CRIB.

“He takes me down to the STUDIO he played me a project that will change the game!! Totally incredible, we top off the day for 2hrs talkin about Music, Family Health and Life thanks for the Invite Dr Dre.”

Dr. Dre fans have been holding their collective breath for another solo album from the N.W.A visionary for years — specifically the nearly mythical project Detox.

Following Dre’s brain aneurysm and subsequent hospitalization in January, the 56-year-old got back to the studio rather quickly. Aftermath Entertainment-affiliated producer Dem Jointz shared an Instagram photo of Dre, The D.O.C. and several others posted up in front of a mixing board.

While that’s not necessarily anything too out of the ordinary, the caption caught fans’ attention.

“And we back!” Dem wrote in the caption. “#Detox21.”

Dr. Dre announced Detox in 2002, but it reportedly delayed so he could work on projects for 50 Cent, Eminem and The Game. In 2015, Dre claimed he’d officially scrapped the project after working on the album for over a decade and instead, gave Dre fans Compton: A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre.

In an August 2020 interview with VladTV, Akon spoke about the Detox sessions and suggested Dre’s perfectionism is what’s keeping the project from seeing the light of day.

“I don’t think [Dre] understands his power sometimes,” he said at the time. “I don’t think that — I think he’s gonna win no matter what because he’s Dre! Just drop that bitch! Like he got bangers though.

“I know for a fact I did a couple of bangers that the world probably will never hear. But man, from what I did hear when we were working together and I was submitting records for ’em, man, they got so much heat. But he’s just a perfectionist — too perfect.”

Dre is currently in the middle of a high profile divorce from his wife of 24 years, Nicole Young, who filed in June 2020, citing “irreconcilable difference.” Since then, he’s been spotted with Omarion’s ex Apryl Jones and another “mystery” woman just last week.

    1. It will be wack, almost mid,or won’t see the light if day during his LIFETIME. Been a dre fan FOREVER but he hasn’t made any heat in over 15 years, fanboys are delusional about most of their favorite artist ABILITY,post their prime. Search:darealkingrichard on YouTube for dope music/content

      1. Nah. You’re wack. Jackass. No one wants to hear your weak ass shit. This moron comes on here saying Dre is wack then directs people to his garbage? Hahahaha. Kind Richard? LOL. What an idiotic name. You should look up who that actually was. You’re depressing.

      2. The only thing you’re the king of is men’s genitals, Matt Damon has a perfect word for you.

      1. I highly doubt it. If anything, MAYBE a joint or so. Dre’s worst enemy is himself it seems. I might be wrong. But with the divorce and stuff, maybe it’ll press him to make more music. But honestly, I’m not holding my breath. As time passes, the sounds he’s allegedly producing will be too outdated. And I bet he goes back to square one. Detox is never coming out. Come to peace with that. He’ll probably dish out leftover beats from here on out, sub par in the lanes of MJB’s Family Affairs or Xzibits X. At least he’s been given his flowers.

      1. I laughed because it’s so true. People actually attribute dude’s sound to remaking George Clinton records, sometimes almost verbatim.

    2. Grandmaster Flash is how old? Dre music out of date. He no longer
produce records. He don’t have the voice. Compton was terrible. I rather her a new record by Cube or
      Yella.
      .

    3. Detox is just the name of a compilation of songs. It can be literally any tracklist Dre wants it to be. Unless he dies and somebody who inherits his estate finds a hand written proposed Detox tracklist and masters to accompany it, Detox never existed. With that being said, Detox can always be created from his vault by whoever inherits it. But it wont have the same effect that it would have if he releases it.

    4. Yeah whatever. Should come out the same time the Ness and Babs Bunny album comes out. I guess Free gonna release her album too eh?

    5. Change the game? If the game is making music nobody will hear and signing artist and not putting them out.

    6. I grew up listening to Dre, all the haters out there, your words don’t mean shit, Dre has accomplished only what you can dream of. The rap music of today is SHIT!!

    7. what is he going to do how do you ”change the game”. i can only imagine you will be like limp bizkit or kid rock and mix two genre of music together. or you go back to rap in its infancy and do that since grandmaster is around. he has sat on his ass and let down his fans. look how about just a decent album a decent rap album about everything street don’t do some crazy shit just because you have been away for so long you don’t have to prove anything my man.

    8. He will change the game because hip hop is pure shit these days. Everyone sounds the same. Dre always drops heat. Production is always on point. Please Dre drop it. I cant stand these new age drugged out rappers these days.
