Gang Starr‘s own DJ Premier has revealed that the legendary Hip Hop group will be dropping new music this upcoming week.
On Saturday (June 24), Preemo took to Instagram to tease the new offering from the iconic rap duo consisting of himself and the late Guru, sharing a photo that resembles an Egyptian tablet with the group’s name and faces on it.

The Grammy-winning producer simply captioned the photo by saying: “Monday,” but didn’t give any detail as to whether or not fans can expect an album, a single, a video, a book, or anything else they might be planning.
A few of Gang Starr’s contemporaries, including Pete Rock and Cormega simply left emojis in the comments section to signify their excitement for what’s to come from the pair.

DJ Premier has worked tirelessly to keep Gang Starr’s name alive for the sake of himself and Guru, who passed away in 2010 from melanoma, which is a form of skin cancer. The group’s last full-length album was 2019’s One of the Best Yet. At the time, HipHopDX gave the album at 4.2 out of 5 rating.
During an interview with Idea Generation earlier this week, Preemo discussed how one of his earliest creative influences was Travis Scott’s father, Jaques Webster Sr.

“We call him Jack,” the Texas native said about his friend. “Jack’s mom was my English teacher … he has a brother named Travis and he has a sister named Sonora — they’re literally across the street.”
He continued: “As I got older, getting closer to almost junior high, we’d go over to the Websters’ house anyway because they had a VCR — they were the first ones I knew with a VCR — and they would tape Soul Train. And I’d be like, ‘Yo, I can watch Soul Train over and over and over.’”
“I’d go over there and Jack’s playing the drums, like killin’ it,” he explained. “And Travis was playin’ the bass, which is two of my influences when I make beats to this day, is my drums and my bass.”
Meanwhile, Cormega recently gave Gang Starr their flowers while asking why the group doesn’t get the recognition they deserve in the stratosphere of Hip Hop.
Last month, the New York-bred lyricist took to Instagram to ponder why the duo is often overlooked, despite their achievements and what they’ve brought to the game.

“Hip Hop 50 year anniversary,” Cormega began. “I have a question? How is a group with one of the most innovative lyricist and a prolific producer who is on the Mount Rushmore of production overlooked? I see list mention groups and exclude Gangstarr that is blasphemy. Some people’s opinion blur the lines of reality. Guru is one of a kind.”
He continued: “He was so smooth that he was able to mesh rap and jazz with his Jazzmatazz project and had listeners that weren’t familiar with jazz intrigued. Together Guru and Premier made a catalog of albums that stood the test of time and should never be excluded from any top group discussion they were elite. Rest in poetic grace Guru. And salute to Premier.”
