Freddie Gibbs & Pharrell Start On ‘Album Of The Year 2021’

On the heels of releasing his 2020 HipHopDX Album of the Year Alfredo, Freddie Gibbs is already plotting his next LP and he’s got high expectations for his Grammy-nominated follow-up.

After teasing another run at “album of the year” in an interview with MixMag earlier in April, Gangsta Gibbs posted a photo to Instagram on Monday (April 12) locked in with Pharrell. A relaxed Freddie Gibbs looks to be playing Skateboard P some new music on the Beats Pill speaker.

Over the weekend, the Gary, Indiana native bumped into Rick Ross, who was holding a bottle of his Luc Belaire and rocking a colorful Versace blouse while enjoying a night out at the club. Rozay and Gibbs connected in 2020 for Alfredo standout “Scottie Beam.”

“It’s another album of the year,” he declared. “I’m about to go and work with Pharrell next week. Madlib, Working On Dying, The Alchemist, Sevn Thomas, Hit-Boy, I just talked to [Mike WiLL Made-It]. It’s gonna be the best-produced album that I ever made.”

Freddie Gibbs also teased another collab in the stash with Swae Lee that’s produced by Boi-1da. Speaking to MixMag, Gibbs stopped short of revealing his next album’s title, but did uncover that it will be a three-word acronym containing “SSS.”

      1. Can’t wait for his movie to come out as it seems to have a good premise. Most versatile artist in the game! People will recognize soon enough! ????

    1. How you diss a brotha multiple times calling him fake, then turnaround and pose for pictures smiling. What happened? Did he become real all of a sudden?

      1. Gibbs will do whatever it takes to make it. He turns 39 this year. He should’ve reinvented himself like Tity Boi to 2 Chainz did when he got older but it’s too late for that now. Label is spending ALOT of money to make this work in the favor of their investment. Thing is I don’t see it working but somebody does… maybe this 180 is a sign… of what… I have no idea. Interesting to see what happens with this project. I think he’s just too old… but if he gets a hit song as a rapper at 39???? I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

        1. Too old? Well guess what thats like one of the main barriers in hip hop no one can seem to break cause rappers r considered “too old” older rappers have much more to say than younger rappers who have hardly done anything. Maybe gibbs will be the old rapper that plays it rigjt and breaks that shit down.hopefully. older fans dont wanna hear a bunch of young non sense all the time

          1. I get it your from his team. You guys are all over this post defending him. Good job getting this to be highlighted on the front page of this site. So my thoughts… He needs to mature if he wants to be taken seriously. The whole comedic trolling doesn’t go with his age. The dude is dope but his antics are his weak spot. What other emcee at his age behaves like 69 besides him online? As an older older head, me, I need his material to also mature they ain’t nothing gangsta about pushing any gangsta talk at 39.

          2. What’s up with these idiots always talking about somebody is too old to rap when literally rappers get better as they age because they have had years to craft their skills! And nobody ever talks about any other genre in this way where there are literally eighty-year-olds still leading their genre. Stevie Wonder, Sergio Mendes and plenty of other old men are still making music till this day and are still popular to this day. Why is it that rappers always get bad when they are older? Busta Rhymes just came out with one of the albums of the year last year and he is older than Freddie!

    2. He didn’t need to reinvent himself, what he was doing was working, he pretty much became the King of the Underground. Now he about to become a small fish in a ocean in the mainstream setting. Bigger budget and adding more famous people on your projects rarely equals bigger numbers. The label taking a good cut, Gibbs one of the best right now no denying it, heck I would say he’s right behind big krit as the best rapper. But Gibbs trying to go mainstream hollywood, is not the thing to do. Guys like Pharrell, Dj Khaled only come around when you’re hot, when your buzz goes away, they want be caught even taking a pic with you. They come around to piggy back off your energy. I know this album will be good because Gibbs puts out consistent work, I just hopes it works from a success number wise, labels will freeze the s–t out of you, I bet snow the product wish she would have never sign with Atlantic, Nip prob wish he would’ve never sign to Atlantic, Krit wish he would’ve never sign to Def Jam

      1. Hes not reinventing himself. Listen to his lyrics. All he’s doing is collabs he never did before and working with producers he never worked with before. Plus if u know this guys work and im sure u do he can do a lot of stuff so why hold back. Fuck numbers he trying to make hits with the best after he made hits with the rest to prove his true artist. The shit with pharell better be nuts. Go freddy str8 killa no filla

      2. See this is how I know you don’t know what you were talking about, because you said that Nipsey signed to Atlantic when he did not sign to anybody! He had a partnership with them but was still his own artist. They just helped him reach a wider audience with the distribution deal. I’m pretty sure he made that very clear and people continue to say that same thing. Either way if you are really a good artist you can overcome anything if you are hardworking and talented enough, which Freddie Gibbs definitely is and he is leagues above Big Krit. The dude can literally rap over any beat, switch up flows (in and out of his own pockets) doesn’t only rap but sings and is way more charismatic and funny than any rapper out now. He also has one helluva story.

    3. I wish when people like him gets more spotlight from mainstream would stop filling his album with expensive producers thinking it helps sell their albums more. I say get to two or three and the rest should be producers like Kno, Hi-tek, and Flying Lotus, or producers that been there from the jump.

      1. Shut it dumb dumb. He should work with Madlib and Alchemist. The people he has been with since jump. Keep your backpack ass opinion to yourself.

    4. Rap album of the year? People will say Gansta Gibbs had the best album last year, they didn’t
listen to Reason from TDE New Beginnings. Freddie Gibbs always drop some heat, but if Krit drop or Reason I think they will top his.

    5. Dude, stay in your lane. Work with Madlib mostly. Have an alchemist beat here or there and a premier beat. Keep your features underground. Stop the Rick Ross shit. The underground got you where you are my guy. You start down this road and you’ll end up like Xzibit. Real talk.

      1. What is up with these people on here? You are obviously do not know Freddie Gibbs and who are you to say that he does not have what it takes to do whatever the hell he wants in the rap game? He’s the greatest and most versatile rapper in the game right now and would destroy any and all of your favorite rappers out now guaranteed.

    6. Gibbs is super versatile and I am eager to hear how a Pharrell collab sounds. Listened to some tracks off Str8 Killa and then played Big Boss Rabbit, and it is unreal how much better Gibbs has gotten at rapping. In fact just going from Str8 Killa to Cold Day in Hell is a huge difference. Amazingly consistent for the last 10+ years. Hope he and Jeezy clear their beef and collab again, they were amazing on tracks together. Do It For You and Sittin Low still go hard

    7. These dumbass writers need to start using people’s real names instead of changing the way they refer to them in every sentence. “…Looks to be playing Skateboard P some new music”, “Over the weekend, the Gary, Indiana native bumped…” Skateboard P? Indiana native? Shit is confusing. Not everybody understands these references. Just refer to these people by their names. Gibbs or Pharrel. And quit trying to find new ways to refer to them in every paragraph. Shit is confusing.

      1. Well if people can’t clearly read the title that is in bold that clearly says the artist’s name or if they don’t know who they’re looking at in the picture maybe this article isn’t for them and they should stop bitching about things just to bitch. Just a thought.

    8. Hahaha, album of the year…rappers need to stop using that phrase. Everything nowadays is subpar to average.

    9. Ppl kill me. Some fans will create out of thin air, bs to bitch about. Freddie Gibbs has been every kind of rapper you can be in music and now that he’s getting his due and taking his place on the top echelon, ppl wanna drop hate on him. Stfu and appreciate that man’s growth as an artist. Keep supporting that talentless, mumblin bumblin, fantasy Rambo Rap and let Big Rabbit get his shine
