Fans know him as Hakeem Lyon from the award-winning Hip Hop soap opera Empire, but police are referencing Bryshere Y. Gray as a suspected wife beater.
TMZ reports the 26-year-old actor and rapper was busted on Monday (July 13) because he “beat the hell outta his wife … according to cops.”
Goodyear Police say they responded to a call outside a Circle K made by a “good Samaritan” assisting another woman, who turned out to be Gray’s wife. She told officers her husband had assaulted her for several hours inside their home, brandishing visible bruises and claiming he strangled her to the point of temporary unconsciousness.
When cops arrived at the Gray residence, a standoff with a SWAT team and crisis negotiators ensued as the rapper known as “Yazz The Greatest” barricaded himself inside. He eventually surrendered outside his home around 7 a.m. local time.
He was then booked into the Maricopa County Jail on felony aggravated assault (for the strangulation), misdemeanor assault (for the overall domestic violence) and misdemeanor disorderly conduct. His wife was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for her injuries and later released, police say.

The unsavory moment apexes a string of uncouth behavior for the Empire actor. In June 2019, he was pulled over and subsequently arrested for driving without a license or insurance. And this past May, he was sued for over $30,000 as landlords claimed he destroyed the Chicago condo he was renting, clogging toilets with condoms and letting his dog urinate wherever and whenever the urge presented itself.
Although quietly married, it was widely speculated Gray was a cheating honeymooner last month.

I don’t know what happened between them but irrespective of whatever it was, it shouldn’t have come to that. I hope his wife is recovering well. Nursing the wounds from such an experience can’t be easy for either of them. Its also my hope that the brother Bryshere is holding it together as well. He needs guidance and room to see the error of his ways through constructive criticism and patience. Our justice system is naturally harsh towards our young black males anyway so he shall face the full wrath of the law in due time. My prayer is that we as a community do not cast him out and forget about him. After all is said and done, he is still one of us.

The two are completely unrelated. The weight of the damage Bryshere has done to his own life and reputation will be felt through the penalties he will recieve from the justice system, wasted time and missed opportunities. Other non-black actors have been charged with the same offence in the past but have managed reform and salvage their careers thanks to help from the justice system and community support. It’s clear that it’s not going to be that easy for him. We can choose to make an already difficult situation damn near impossible or we can let justice run its course and extend an olive branch to a man who’s willing to change afterward. History has taught us that both are necessary in order attain results. That’s why you also need to look at how other communities are rehabilitating their own before you open your mouth.
