Eminem‘s latest album The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) has topped the Billboard 200 with the biggest sales week of 2024 in Hip Hop.
Debuting atop the chart with 281,000 equivalent album-units, Em’s 12th LP finally knocked Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department after an unbroken 12-week stint at No. 1, per Billboard.
The Death of Slim Shady‘s first-week sales make it the biggest rap debut of 2024, eclipsing Future and Metro Boomin‘s previous benchmark of 251,000 units sold with We Don’t Trust You.
Eminem’s latest offering also had the second biggest digital launch of the year with 114,000 sales, second only to Swift’s 274,000. The Death of Slim Shady does not have a physical release until September 13.
The album was originally projected to earn between 270,000 and 290,000 album-equivalent units in its opening week, so it landed right in the middle of this estimate.
The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) is Em’s 11th No. 1 album, putting him level with Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand. Only Drake (13), Swift (14), JAY-Z (also 14) and The Beatles (19) have more.
The album also had a bigger opening week than Slim Shady’s previous album, 2020’s Music to be Murdered By (279,000), as well as 2017’s Revival (267,000).
Since its release on July 12, The Death of Slim Shady has courted controversy after Eminem dissed conservative pundit Candace Owens on “Lucifer.”
“And Candace O, I ain’t mad at her / I ain’t gon’ throw the fact bitch forgot she was Black back at her / Laugh at her like them crackers she’s backin’ after her back is turned / In a cute MAGA hat with her brand-new White Lives Matter shirt,” he rapped on the Dr. Dre-produced song.
He continued: “Or say this MAGA dirtbag in a skirt / Just opened the biggest can of worms on the whole planet Earth / Call her Grand Wizard, Klandace Grand Dragon or / Like the national anthem, I won’t stand for the tramp / But I can’t diss her ’cause my plans are to get in her pants and I’ll blow my chance if I answer back to her.”
Owens responded to Eminem in a lengthy rant on her YouTube channel, accusing of him being a closeted homosexual.
“First thing I wanna say is Eminem is obviously a gay man. It’s very sad that Eminem cleaned out his closet but never came out of his closet,” she said, referencing his 2002 hit.
Owens added: “It would have meant something if he was at his prime. He is not at the peak of his career; he is at the end of it. His career should have ended, like, 15 years ago and he keeps going.”
isn’t this em’s 12th album?
Yup.
Yes, but the article says that it’s his eleventh album to go to number one on Billboard. He released twelve albums but only eleven were number one. SSLP only reached number 2, since then he’s had eleven in a row
13 studio albums, his first was Infinite and it didn’t sell and second was The Slim Shady LP debuted at number 2 behind TLC’s FanMail.
Wait a minute, that’s not fair, he’s white, how can this be happening?
Same reason it happened with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Elvis… White folks show up in droves once a White person validates Black music for them.
@Gem Lord cool story.. the only problem is that if what u said was true, there’d be massive amounts of white rappers who’ve had huge sales/streams. Besides Em, the Beastie Boys were the only other white rappers who’ve had mainstream success
@Nope This “cool story” has happened to Blues, Rock n Roll, Jazz, House and Techno. The only reason this “cool story” hasn’t happened to RnB is because White folks didn’t want it. The only reason it hasn’t happened to Hip Hop is Black folks wouldn’t let it. White folks had to be twice as good for a change instead of the other way around. So nothing cool about this “story”. These are just cold, hard facts.
So where are all the huge white rap stars at? There’s Eminem who still does massive numbers.. then who? I’ll wait.
So The Beatles and Rolling Stones is black music? LMAO! If what you’re saying is right then why didn’t the white folks show up for Vanilla Ice, Beastie Boys, G Eazy, MGK, Bubba Sparxxx, etc… and keep them at the top for 25 years?
And it’s trash. Dude benefits from white pop audiences. It is what it is.
It wasn’t his best album, wasn’t his worst. Fuel, Bad One, Lucifer, Tobey, Somebody Save Me, Kyrie & Luka, etc were all bangers. I’d put those songs against most other albums I’ve heard this year
Eminem is not the greatest rapper he is a good emcee but sometimes his music is boring. I don’t want to hear about Hailee, or Kim or his mom etc…his lyrics more shock value and his rap beefs were wack, nick cannon, Christia Aguilera, Mariah Carrey, mobey, benzino etc. Has he ever dissed somebody relevant in hip hop ? Way overrated. Lyrically and battle wise he is great which is really the only time I listen to his music. Em stans get super upset trying to convince everyone he the best of all-time he is not top 10 maybe top 15 of all time that goes to 2pac, biggie, DMX, Lil Wayne, Nas, Big Pun, Big L, jay z, ice cube, andre 3000, etc
No one will ever agree on who’s the GOAT but his lyricism and wordplay is unbeatable… he did not diss someone “relevant” because all the real rappers including the ones you mentioned have always shown him love and acknowledged him as one of the greatest to ever do it, even Big Pun who only lived to witness his first album (The Slim Shady LP) stood in a queue outside a record store with Fat Joe to get a copy of it and Joe have said this story which you watch on YouTube.
Eminem is a dope emcee. But half his audience doesn’t really buy/stream any Hip Hop besides him. And half of that group is undoubtedly anti black. So numbers don’t matter. The Culture stamping you is what matters.
Album is great. It is lyrical and technical plus has em’s natural ‘I can rap’ aspect to it. Dummies complain about everything. Album is fire. Em outraps everyone on this one and it is not just for the sake of it. The namedrop headlines are not even the strongest parts of the album.
confidence compliments accomplishments King Kong got tha shits.
So that’s the only line you got out of the entire album? LMAO
Fuck the haters …
