Drake Claps Back At Joe Budden’s ‘For All The Dogs’ Critique: ‘You Have Failed At Music’

Drake isn’t standing for criticism of his new album For All the Dogs — at least if it comes from Joe Budden.

The two engaged in a back-and-forth on Saturday (October 7). It began with Budden sharing his thoughts on For All The Dogs on the latest episode of his podcast.

“[Drake is] rapping for the children,” Budden said. “I had to look up how old this n-gga was when I finished listening to the album … You gonna be 37 years old. Get the fuck away from some of these younger n-ggas, and stop fucking these 25-year-olds. … Why are you still fucking the 25-year-olds? You’re a 37-year-old billionaire.”

He compared Drake’s career arc unfavorably to J. Cole‘s. “Cole used to rap about kid shit … And then he started to grow up. And then the rapping sounded like an adult rapping. I want to hear adult Drake rapping for adult people. That’s my issue with him today.”

You can hear Budden’s critique beginning at the 1:09:47 mark of the episode below:

Drake responded to Budden’s comments with a long screed on social media, saying the rapper-turned-broadcaster had “failed at music.”

“You left [music] behind to do what you are doing in this clip because this is what actually pays your bills,” Drake wrote. “[Y]ou switched careers cause the things that pop into your brain had you broke living cheque to cheque and the raps you write had 450 men showing up to your shows in dusty Enyce jeans to screw up their face to Mood Muzik 29 and pretend you are the goat.

“[Please] to any artist that’s doing what they feel is right don’t let these opinions affect your mindset after the fact…this guy is the poster child of frustration and surrendering.”

“If you need it put in simpler terms,” Drizzy concluded, “I own a 767…he owns a modest house in the 973 and flies first class on special occasions.”

Budden hit back, writing: “You’ll grow up sooner or later…. Father time is undefeated.”

Drizzy’s clap back comes years after his and Budden’s highly publicized rivalry. The pair began feuding back in 2016 after JB gave a harsh review of the 6 God’s 2016 Views album. Drizzy would go on to snipe Budden on songs such as “4pm in Calabasas” and “No Shopping,” while Budden returned the favor by sending four diss tracks in Drake’s direction.

The two put their differences aside and squashed their feud officially in 2020 during an Instagram Live session.

In July last year, Drake had some fun at Budden’s expense when he posted a video on Instagram of some people dancing to the retired rapper’s 2003 track “Pump It Up.”

Drizzy was at an outdoor restaurant in St. Tropez when he clocked a couple of people getting down to Budden’s breakout hit as it rang off throughout the venue. “Where else, where else, Joey, would you have them going so crazy? They’re going so nuts. Ay,” Drake can be heard saying while filming the party.

However, this latest spat suggests their relationship is back on rocky ground.

    1. Hit songs equal success? Why this corporate era of hip hop is so wack. Pac has one #1 Billboard hit, and Drake will never be on his level. Budden made good music when he used to rap. He’s a little extra with his antics off the mike, but the music is all I care about. Drake’s albums since NWTS have been the same thing over and over again. It’s the hybrid baby of that Black Eyed Peas and Florida pop bullshit from the last decade. I don’t shit on dude just because, but he lost his way a while ago and seems to be a bitter dude who has lost his inspiration for making music. Maybe the pressure to deliver the next forgettable radio hit is cracking him up or something, but the well is dry. Half the time he sounds like he’s high or something doing these songs.

      1. lol this comment made it clear you haven’t listened to any of his last 4-5 albums. From CLB, Take care, Scoprion all completely different. Versatility at its peak. Now show me versatility on buddens projects I’ll wait

      2. Have at least given every album he’s put out a courtesy spin going back to Room for Improvement days, and they’ve been underwhelming since NWTS. That you think this shit has been amazing the last ten years is more on your ears, not mine. Dude made a song with Michael Jackson vocals on it because he thought it would be a hit, not because he wanted to make a good song. That’s the definition of phoning it in, and he’s been phoning it in for going on eight or nine years now.

    2. I agree with both Drake and Joe. While Drake album is wack, Joe’s opinions on music are invalid and voided.

      1. Why are his opinions invalid? So your opinions count but his don’t? Let’s be real, who is hot or not is just a matter of circumstance. If Drake never stood next to Lil Wayne, he’d already be out of the game right now. That’s how it’s always been going back to Snoop and Dr. Dre getting that NWA push. It’s up to the artist to run with the baton, but name the last truly organic star in the game. Even people like 2Pac got their first looks because of the DU connection, and then people liked what they heard when they picked his shit up. So now Drake is forgetting that? He’s acting like this is organic? Budden gave him some constructive criticism of why he probably looks so miserable every time you see him because he’s swag surfing and putting out forgettable music. Joe Budden was one of the few people in the industry who actually fucked with him before he got the Wayne co-sign, so I think he can critique him all these years later.

      2. He’s obviously a sensitive dude, but you can clearly see he’s not happy because the music complex is using him to push this shitty music. He knows it, but it’s akin to the guy who sold out saying I did what I had to do, but look at how big my house is. Never mind that I can’t sleep at night because of what I did to get here.

      3. So my opinion matters too bc you responded to me. If thats how your basic ass logic works 🤣

      4. This is why I give LL so much respect. No crew, no cosign, and rose from the dead multiple times in his career.

    3. Drake just spoke truth. Drake is appealing to a wide range of people and his music speaks to all genders and animal forms. Joe Budden is old and washed up and signed to a pop rap group under a pop rapper

    4. Drake is gay as fxck but nobody put this fool Budden in his stank ass place like Drake just did. Everything he said was facts! People (especially Budden) forget this shit is entertainment and not everything you say on the mic needs to change the world or be a statement. Dude still holding onto 1992 FOH Budden!

    5. Yikes! For Drake to reply so quickly, Buddens must have touched a nerve. Cole did used to rap about his teenage and college years but grew out of it.

    6. Can’t stand Drake’s music but like him or not, he is successful. So he certainly doesn’t need to take advice from a never-has-been. Honestly given how much of a non-entity Joe’s music career is, I don’t know how even thinks he’s in a position to offer critique.

      1. So by your logic, A&Rs and music execs like Clive Davis who have made careers like Whitney Houston pop shouldn’t critique or say shit because he never made a hit record. Budden has been a fan of his before anybody knew who he was. Before the Wayne co-sign, he was one of the few people in the industry who used to give him looks when he’d shout him out back in 2006 or 2007. Drake has sounded like h’es on auto pilot for ten years now, and whether he sells or not has little to do with him doing anything right at this point. You know that as well as everyone else does.

      2. And who’s career has Budden made exactly? You’re reaching and you know it. I’m not a Drake fan so I don’t care how much you bad mouth him. I don’t listen to mediocre simp music. However he’s currently at the top of the game when it comes to commercial hip hop and you’d have to be incredibly dense or just desperately ignorant to say otherwise. Drake actually has a career and is doing massive numbers. You can argue over quality but not the numbers. Joe makes a living bitching about rappers having success in an industry that he never succeeded in himself. It’s embarrassing. If you were Drake and getting all these sales and profits, would you seriously take any advice from some bum that aspires to be nothing more than the rap version of Loose Women? I certainly wouldn’t. Be honest with yourself. Joe Budden is in no position to give career advice about rap, end of discussion.

      3. Who said he made him? Some of you are illiterate as fuck. I said he was genuinely a fan when it didn’t benefit him whatsoever. He was a fan when he was making Little Brother knockoff songs in 2006 or 2007. So why do you assume he has an agenda. The fact is that the music isn’t good and hasn’t been for a while now, but according to you, as long as he sells records, which is debatable knowing how the industry works with streaming farms, it’s all good. Like are you serious? So someone with his platform putting out FloRida or Black Eyed Peas type music that isn’t what his heart is in, which is obvious to anyone looking at dude and knowing how he came into the game, is cool because the ends justify the means? No wonder hip hop is as fucked as it is.

      4. What are you rambling on about? Where did I say that you said Drake made Joe or vice versa? Are smoking crack or is the vibrations from smacking your elbows on the keyboard rattling your last remaining brain cell loose? All that nonsense you just literally does not have a thing to do with what I said or even what Drake said. Who cares if Budden or Drake are a fan of each other? The point as has been made… That you are seemingly incapable of grasping…. Is that Budden is in no position to give musical advice either in term of critical or commercial success. No pick your dummy back up, shove it back in your mouth and don’t take it back out again until you understand what’s actually been said.

      5. he didn’t give him any advice. He actually praised him like he always does. He criticized why he’s rapping about shit from an early 20 year old’s perspective when he’s nearly twice that age. But you’re a dickrider so you think anyone not putting this sorry sack of shit up there with Thriller is hating on him. Fact is that Drake is a chameleon putting out forgettable music trying to stay relevant.

      6. That is exactly what an A&R does. Joe isn’t an A&R. If he couldn’t hold up his own career, why critique mine? Joe obviously only had one hit and nothing after that, so sensitive drake is right, do not take his advice.

      7. SEMS,

A&R doesn’t have shit to do with telling a damn near 40 year old that they shouldn’t be rapping like a 25 year old. They find new artists. So what in the fuck are you talking about?

    7. Drake worships Joe and even used to rap like him. This definitely hurt his feelings. Fuck Joe tho. No one in Jersey likes him.
