Drake, B.o.B, Lex Luger & More Win At BMI Urban Awards

The BMI Urban Awards were held last night at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, California, honoring the songwriters, producers and music publishers of this past year’s most-performed BMI R&B and Hip Hop songs.

According to Billboard.biz, Drake was awarded his first songwriter of the year award, dedicating the award to his mother. “I really want to dedicate this award real quick to my mother, who never gave me the definition of a word in my life. I would always ask her what this meant, she’d always make me look it up. And I would have to look up all these words and I’d have to learn words and build a vocabulary.”

Producer Lex Luger was honored as the youngest-ever BMI Urban Award recipient, while producers Polow Da Don, Kane Beatz, R. Kelly and Kanye West were also named Top Producers.

B.o.B also became the youngest songwriter ever to win the BMI Urban Song of the Year for his track “Nothin’ on You” featuring Bruno Mars.

Snoop Dogg was the recipient of the BMI Icon Award. During a tribute performance, “Wiz Khalifa kicked off the tribute with ‘Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang’; The Lady of Rage followed with ‘Deep Cover’; Too $hort delivered ‘Gin & Juice’; Warren G, Kurupt and Daz Dillinger came together for ‘Ain’t No Fun’; Game performed ‘Murder was the Case’; Charlie Wilson delivered ‘Beautiful’; Akon followed with ‘Sexual Seduction’; Nas and Kurupt wowed with ‘Next Episode’; and lastly, Aftermath’s Dr. Dre offered a heartfelt speech before Snoop Dogg himself joined Bootsy Collins and Charlie Wilson on stage to deliver ‘What’s My Name?’ as the towering finale.”
