Dizzee Rascal Compares Parts Of The U.S. To The Third World

Dizzee Rascal talks racism and poverty in the United States, during Vlad TV interview.

Although London rapper Dizzee Rascal got a glimpse at life in the states through music videos and the internet, he says he was taken aback by the amount of poverty he witnessed firsthand, during his time spent in the U.S.

The musician spoke on the matter when the topic of the effects of slavery, specifically in regards to racism, was brought up. At one point, Dizzee revealed that he’s glad he grew up in England.

“It wasn’t long ago enough,” Dizzee Rascal said while speaking on slavery. “I’ve been to areas in this country that are fuckin’–I can’t believe it’s America. It’s like third world. I been to parts of Miami and parts of Houston and New Orleans, back in the day. Before Katrina. It’s like ‘What the fuck’s this about? This is fuckin’ terrible.’ I’ve never even seen this kind of poverty before…The poverty I’ve seen here is a madness. The lack of empathy and how crazy this country is, I thought I knew. We grew up on music videos…so we could see exactly what’s going on and when it’s going on. But it wasn’t til I’ve been here for years and seen the shit for myself, I’m like ‘Fuckin’ no. I’m glad I grew up in England.'”

Dizzee later explained that racism is present in England, but added that it’s much “more blatant” in the United States.

“Racism’s more blatant here…I never felt like the police were gonna kill me. There’s been a few incidents in the UK. Probably more than [there’s been light shed on]. But it’s still not like it is here,” he said.

    3. of course some peeps are gonna take it the wrong way like he’s attacking ppl for saying what he saw (Df). as someone who’s lived overseas for a while, I can tell you a lot of people’s idea of america despite the hard circumstances they might be living under is skewed due to pop culture so what Dizzy’s saying is hardly surprising.

my own parents were born and bred in africa and grew up poor. i remember them telling me how after they had arrived in the States, they unwittingly went to Jamaica Queens responding to an ad for a car not realizing how rough the area was and they were stunned at how impoverished the place was and they said the same shit as Dizzy about how it looked like a third world country. mind you this was the late 80s early 90s. every country has rough, impoverished areas but many people don’t realize how bad it is in the US because the image they are fed from movies, shows etc doesn’t reflect it.

      1. Its the fact say we have it bad in some areas then cause we do half fallen buildings crumbling homes abandoned vehicles on the streets homelessness every which way its the fact its shocking because just 30 minutes in the oposite direction everythings good but dont say it worse than anywhere else in the world because wanna know why? Yea africa is very impoverished and so if alot of the war torn middle east but heres the deal for the most part those areas are consistently horrible and impoverished theres no escaping it 30 minutes in the other direction like in america and heres another part of the deal there are areas in africa that are much like new orleans or queens for instance and wanna know what? There is absolutley no policing or safety in those parts period and i guarentee the daily body count is astronomicaly higher than anywhere in america the part that bugged me about the article is someone trying to say a country such as america even compares to a 3rd world country with all the tools people have to utilize here
