Bun B, who was featured on Drake’s 2009 mixtape, So Far Gone, says he recorded his verse for “Uptown” less than 48 hours prior to the release of the mixtape, and that he attended a Drake concert shortly after.
“It was amazing to watch how quickly everybody mutually agreed that this is a great talent,” Bun B says during an interview on The Devin The Dude Show. “Like this dude is an incredible talent.”
In 2013, Drake referenced Bun B on Nothing Was The Same’s “Too Much”: “Backstage at Warehouse in ‘09 like, ‘Is Bun Coming?’”
Bun B also says that he and Drake have developed a friendship. “We talk a lot about different things, about life,” Bun B says. “He’s a real smart dude, but outside of that I think he’s a lot more mature than people think, for being so young. And he got a clear understanding of where he’s trying to go and where he’s trying to be, and he’s not letting anyone dictate that for him.”
“He’s been in the business for a while,” Devin the Dude said in reference to Drake’s role in the Canadian TV show Degrassi: The Next Generation.
“It was new to him” getting in the rap game, Bun B says. “This is a lot different from doing a teen TV show…When they slap somebody on TV, it’s fake. When they slap somebody in the rap world, it’s real.”
Bun B also says that UGK originally went by “4BM” or “4 Black Menaces,” and that the group included himself, Pimp C and two other members who went on to pursue football. He says “Cocaine In The Back Of The Ride” was the first song he and Pimp C recorded together in a studio. Bun B says they recorded the song “on the same mic at the same time” to avoid studio costs.
