Big Boi Explains His Evolution As A Soloist

Outkast hasn’t released a group album since the 2006 soundtrack to Idlewild, but according to Big Boi, the duo has been moving separately yet together for a bit longer. As Big Boi prepares his second solo album, he hasn’t exactly been forthcoming on when fans should expect another album featuring him alongside Andre 3,000. But at this point, it’s probably safe to say Big’s previously stated plan of an Outkast album and an Andre 3,000 solo album in the same year probably won’t happen.

“That’s top-secret information, so right now I’m just working on this Daddy Fat Sax album, I’m working on my new group, Vonnegut, and as well I just shot the video for my new single, “Be Still” with Janelle Monae,” Big Boi told the Wall St. Journal, when asked about the next Outkast album. “For the most part, it’s been about, hmm, nine years solo.”

In the meantime, Big Boi has had plenty to keep him busy. Since inking a solo deal at Def Jam in 2010, he’s been nominated for two Grammys—one for his own “Shutterbugg” and another as a guest on Janelle Monae’s “Tightrope.” Big Boi also had some interesting thoughts on free music promotions such as Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Fridays, which spawned nearly a dozen imitations from artists looking to cash in on the trend.

“Before either one of them did it, I was doing it with this record,” Big Boi explained. “I put out ‘Shine Blockas’ the day after Christmas, and then came ‘For Your Sorrows’ maybe a week after that. They just put a name on it. But that was my method to releasing Sir Lucious Leftfoot—I didn’t have a record company releasing it, so I was just putting songs out like every week or two.”

Big Boi drove his point home by adding that “Royal Flush,” a song that he says he and Andre “just threw out there” prior to being featured on DJ Drama’s album, eventually got nominated for a Grammy with no major radio support.

    1. love outkast and big boi, but its hard for me to listen to a straight big boi album. His flow and ryming pattern just gets to me after awhile. Its jittery and not too conversational. Nobody pronounces all the “T’s” in the word dentist either, lol.

      1. I disagree, Big Boi has one of the best flows in the game. I don’t see how pronouncing the “T”‘s in dentist is a problem either, but that’s personal opinion I suppose.

      2. I disagree. His unconventional flow what makes me listen to him. That what makes him unique. Plus he be snappin hard as hell also.

    2. Big Boi is one of the most underrated mc’s of all-time and Speakerboxxx is a classic. His last album was pretty good, it had that P-Funk feel to it, but….

Andre 3000, quit being The Rock of hip-hop and bring your ass home and make an album for the fans.

Andre 3000 is one of the greatest ever to pick up a microphone, but some of the shit I’ve heard him on the past couple of years is just soft. The Love Below wasn’t as great as Speakerboxxx which is funny considering 3000 has the edge as an mc, but Big Boi is definitely more grounded.

Hasn’t that always been the case? Big Boi is grounded and 3000’s head is up in the clouds. It made for the perfect mix.

3000, quit being a prima donna.

    3. its good to kno that the homie is on its grind, a outkast ablum would be nice…yet big boi seams to be on his rap shit while 3 stacks on some recluse that shit…maybe this year will the fans hear something? a guess is good as mine

    4. it makes me really fuckin upset that 3 stacks won’t throw down any verses. I have always loved andre and he is one of my favorite hiphop artist i just dont know why he’s bein a bitch about makin a fuckin album with big boi?? is it that hard?? anyways props to big boi for bein the coolest mother fucker out there and holdin shit down.

      1. The label that 3 stacks is sign to wont let him make any records with Big Boi. Before Big BOi got release he was signed to Jive Records, actually big boi is still signed to jive but as a member in outkast but as solo artist he’s under def jam. Its the label not Dre 3 stacks himself.

    5. I totally agree w/Honestly, it’s kinda difficult to listen to Big Boi’s unconventional flow for a whole album, just as it is kinda hard for ME to listen to DMX yelling all by himself on a whole album. Luckily these 2 artist know how to compensate for their oddities by sprinkling the right dose of features on their album. Take for instance Big Boi’s last album. The potency was prevelant as always, but he had just enough cameos to keep it fresh without drifting into “compilation album status”. That album is a banger, and as much as I’d like another Outkast album, I salute Big Boi for holding ATL hip hop down. He’s done a great job at staying relevant and has continued to churn out some SERIOUS music. BTW I preffered “Love Below” to “Speaker Boxxx”, I’m just saying Big Boi has definitely developed into an iconic rapper without Andre by his side for sometime now…That’s gotta count for something.
