Those watching Atlanta on Friday night (April 6) might have noticed the character the episode revolved around — Teddy Perkins — looked like Michael Jackson had risen from the dead. Not only that, Perkins carried the same mannerisms as Donald Glover, raising suspicions it was actually the show’s co-creator donned in whiteface.
Lo and behold, Perkins was played by Glover who dipped himself in white makeup for the role.
Fellow Atlanta actor Derrick Haywood confirmed the news to Vulture, explaining, “Initially, I had no idea that Teddy Perkins was actually played by Donald Glover. Not only did Glover play Teddy, he transformed into Teddy on set, staying in character as the shady figure – pasty makeup, wig, high-pitched voice and all – between scenes.”
“The director [Hiro Murai] called ‘Teddy’ over [on set] and said, ‘Let’s see what Teddy thinks,'” he continues. “I’m like, ‘Okay, who is this Teddy guy and why is his opinion so important?’ When I say this guy was in character the whole time, it was just amazing the commitment he brought. We were calling him Teddy, he acted as Teddy – there was no Donald on set whatsoever.”[apple_news_ad type=”any”]

You mean like robert downey junior in tropic thunder?
Now, let’s pretend it was the other way around – some white guy would wear a prosthetic blackface. Imagine the outcry – there would be accusations of racism, boycottting and demonstrations, big ass BLM marches on the streets of every city etc. This way around.. *crickets*
Two words tropic thunder..yw
Ben Stiller is jevvish.
Please dont bring your ass up in here complaining about what Black people can get away with and White people can’t.
Log out and regroup. Next time think and do some research before you come out of your mouth… lol! Fake outrage is played out.
It must be really challenging being so close minded. I get what u are saying, but it does not apply here. There is a difference between taking creative license and what you are clearly accusing DG of. If you think Atlanta is purposely perpetuating stereotypes and ignorance through their portrayals of that character let me know. Don’t be brainwashed. Don’t be hateful and accusatory. Racism is real and apparently here to stay. Just be fair and respectful. By the way my life does matter. You don’t get a separate set of rules, even though you may think so.
Nadia wasn’t claiming another set of rules, fool. It sounds like your projecting your vision of bias onto her. She was only pointing out the hypocrisy of how blacks can be incredibly racist towards whites as well . Yes it happens. They become that which they claim to despise.
She also didn’t say your life didn’t matter. And nothing she said seemed racist. It was her offering a perspective that you twisted and rejected. But you need to play it off as racist, and as a result hold on to hate. When you try to put words into people’s mouths you undermine your effectiveness and whatever point you were trying to make gets lost.
She was just sayin there is a double standard when it comes to black/whiteface. And she’s right. There are two sets of rules, because BLM demanded it.
Something more recent Tropic Thunder and i don’t recall anyone marching or calling for a boycott this week. Luann on the housewives of New York came to a Halloween party in blackface. Her cast mates acknowledged the bad taste. Besides this was not a white face issue. This is an issue abiut failing to love who you are because you feel like society wants you look and be something else. You can’t love yourself when you only know pain. But you tried it…. applause
You realize Tropic Thunder was making fun of Hollywood’s use of blackface right? Several characters in the movie even pointed out how distasteful & inappropriate it was.
That episode was a waste of time. They went from the dope barbershop episode to that bullshit.
Versatility! Glover not only delivered a fantastic, emmy worthy performance himself, but so did his co-star. How can you not show love?
That Teddy Perkins episode was crazy in a good way, if u understand all the things going on in the episode from the acting to the dialogue then u think it’s great, otherwise u don’t understand and think it sucks.
“Atlanta” on FX airs on THURSDAYS at 10 PM Eastern US time zone. !! It is pure brilliance !
Donald Glover to Hiro Mural to Stefani Robinson to Lakeith Stanfirld to Katt Williams…. mixes comedy, drama, world events, music, cultural mores ( to name a few) and spins them on their heads ! A MUST SEE experience !!!
? that’s crazy. the cultural undertones were pretty dope too. Dude can really act.
Tropic Thunder
Yet another Donald Glover article…. how far are you up this guys bumhole dx? He’s an average actor and rapper full stop!
Man, that Teddy P. was eerie yet intriguing as well. Regardless of how any 1 feels, I still liked it. i didn’t even realize that was D.G. until my lady pointed it out. Atlanta has been dope so far. Every episode has been fire, except 4 maybe Helen, but I later found out that it was actually a tribute dedicated 2 Zazie Beetz’s actual German heritage so I can accept that. All in all, the episode w/ Bibby was the best by far, in my opinion.
