Are Rap Crews Dead? | The Breakdown

Host Page Kennedy has returned with a new episode of The Breakdown titled “Are Rap Crews Dead?” During the roughly 13-minute episode, Kennedy explores if rap crews still exist in the new year or if they really are part of a bygone era.

The enthusiastic rapper/actor starts by defining what exactly a rap crew entails. He explains one can consist of members of a label such as Bad Boy Records or Death Row Records or simply be an actual rap group such as The Roots, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Fugees or Organized Noize. [apple_news_ad type=”any”]

Kennedy also talks about rap groups that became a movement — from N.W.A to Wu-Tang Clan.

While rap crews dominated the ’90s, 2000s and early 2010s, Kennedy points out some of those crews slowly began to dissolve.

    So what happened?

Watch The Breakdown to hear our theories.

    1. Yup. Black Hippy could have been a resurgence at the time, but they didn’t do it. And if they did it now, it wouldn’t be the same. 2012 was the year everyone wanted a black hippy album. Today, it would sound like a young money compilation album…

    2. There are still crews but you won’t find them on any of them fuck ass Top 40 lists. His Kingpin and The Winners, Planet Asia and the Gold Chain Brigade, Griselda, TDE, Dreamville…..Just to name a few of the better known crews out there putting in work.

      1. Lol, TDE is purely the top 40 list. Kendrick raps with Migos and Future now, Schoolboy Qs crash talk was straight up radio pop rap, Jay arocks Redemption was pop rap, and Absouls last good album was Control System.

    3. This dude is so out of touch. Griselda is running shit..he never mentioned Infamous Mobb..I think ppl like Flee Lord and big Twins would take offense. Soul Assassins..dude is out of touch

    4. I’m from the Ruff Ryder, wutang, dipset, rocafella, gunit, state prop era. I agree the streets played a big part of it. Look at griselda

    5. Labels take too much cake. Rappers rolling solo still get greased. How would a group make enough to pay ends meat entering into a 360 deal? Puppets on a string Man

      1. Black hippy… One song every 2 years, awesome! Black hippy could have been amazing… They passed that opportunity up.

      1. Going strong? No, they’re not. As individual members, maybe. No album since 2014 and in-house fall outs with the RZA means they’re absolutely NOT going strong as a collective. Get your facts straight.

        1. Wu tang 25 years and still going strong. Your favorite artist probably wouldn’t last this long. Most artists in all genres don’t last this long. Wu forever!

      2. Wu-Tang clan literally have ONE classic album one decent album, and then mostly not so great albums. Wu-Tang only survived because some of the individual members had great solo careers. 95% of those who wear Wutang shirts, or Rep Wutang, cannot name 4 albums of theirs… Bunch of posers.

        1. GOOF talks.

First they don’t just have one “classic” you must have not been born or extremely young in 97, if you don’t appreciate that wu tang forever is a classic. Best double cd album of all time, and if you want to debate it base don sales, it beat out Any album to date with record sales setting a crazy record with that joint.

          SO you have the classic
36 chambers – monumental hip hop classic that helped spawn

          OB$CL
          tical
          RT36C
          LS
          Iron man
          Da pillage
wutang Forever- greatest selling labum to date, best double cd of all time(we know Black shampoo was an accident)
Supreme clientele – greatest album released in the 2000’s IMO

Those are wu albums, all produced by RZa, all had numerous wu tang features that helped make the albums. Its all colelctivly part of wu tang

Then the W – Good album, not 36/forever status, but a damn good album

followed by several hit or miss albums. I won’t even go in to the Wu fam albums, la the darkman, SOM, Killarmy, gravediggaz, killah pries solo, royal fam, because you know, i only know 4 albums or less.

          Goof talks!

        2. First of all do the knowledge before you speak on the Gods. They have millions of albums. Enter the 36chambers is a classic,Wutang Forever(double CD) is a classic. Iron Man, Tical,The Pillage,Liquid Swords,Only Built for Cuban Linx are ALL PLATINUM. They did this before all this bs social media fkshyt. So watch your mouth because we ALL know you aint comin close to anything theyve accomplished.

    6. I feel more rap/trap collectives are surfacing and that is becoming the ish
Look up The La Même Gang from Ghana and see what I’m talking about

    7. How about No they aren’t dead, The Migos are going to go down as one of the biggest rap groups of all time. And individually they’re on fire too. And no I don’t wanna hear that bullshit about they’re mumble rappers. They clearly are not mumble rappers and have shown across multiple projects they’re more then capable of being top tier rappers.

      1. You know rap crews and rap groups are not the same thing right? Anyways. Migos will most definitely not go down as one of the biggest rap groups of all time. Wtf are you smoking? Ever heard of the Wu-Tang Clan? N.W.A? Run-DMC? A Tribe Called Quest? Wait no, you probably haven’t.

    8. Groups don’t last because of selfishness, greed, jealously, envy, some members not having the same dedication after success, substance abuse, members now have families, individual goals eventually become more important than group goals, members probably weren’t all that close to begin with, or most important, group members grow/mature and want to do different things as individuals.

    9. As you said, this is just our opinion. Where’s the substance in this video? I am missing the point of the paradigm shift of hip hop group and the understanding of its popularity. Is it not popular any longer?

    10. Wu tang and bone thugs n harmony still doing good both group been in the game 25+ years all of them have at least 3 classics albums and as solo artists ! Dont wanna talk about sales cuz thats bullshit
