Akademiks Says Freddie Gibbs Is ‘Absolutely Irrelevant’ If Jeezy Is

Akademiks deemed Freddie Gibbs to be a nonfactor during a discussion about the Warner Records artist’s recent comments on Jeezy’s current musical prominence. In a segment for Complex’s Everyday Struggle, Akademiks argued Gibbs is also irrelevant if Jeezy no longer qualifies as relevant.

“If Jeezy is irrelevant, Freddie Gibbs, you are absolutely irrelevant as well,” he said. “If Jeezy drop an album right now, he sell 50,000 [units] … Relevancy means is your music actually doing anything. And to be honest, other than the few people who fuck with Freddie Gibbs, what relevancy does he have?”

Akademiks’ co-hosts Nadeska Alexis and Wayno pushed back, but the internet personality continued to be dismissive of Gibbs over his album sales history.

Although Akademiks suggested Gibbs was selling around 20,000 copies, the Indiana-bred rapper’s latest release Alfredo — a collaboration with Alchemist — sold over 30,000 copies in its first week and peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200.

Gibbs’ relevancy became a topic of conversation on Everyday Struggle due to remarks he made about Jeezy in an interview with Bootleg Kev. Gibbs, who was once signed to Jeezy’s CTE imprint, said his former boss had become irrelevant.

“Jeezy is musically irrelevant,” he contended. “Let’s be real, dawg. Did you listen to his last album? No you fucking didn’t. He’s a legend but right now, you’re irrelevant.”

DJ Akademiks Calls Out Freddie Gibbs For ‘Speaking In Codes’ When Dissing Rappers

He added, “I love [Jeezy], but what you want to fight? You can’t fight me, out rap me. Any nigga that can’t out rap me or beat me up, I don’t give a fuck about.”

Listen to what Akademiks had to say above and revisit Gibbs’ words about Jeezy below.

    1. Sorry, Mr. Gibbs. I was born in the 80s, grew up in the 90s. I see your recent critical acclaim, and concede I’ve never heard a single song of yours. I’m not dissing. I just haven’t had a chance to check out your music yet. I will say this though: all yall new super lyrical guys — Kendrick and Cole included, Lupe exempt — sound mediocre lyrically compared to my greats, which include Rakim, Nas, Wu, etc. And I understand you’re from that era as well, so maybe I’m wrong. I reserve the right to be wrong. Peace to you, my brotha.

      1. This is the politest slight I’ve ever seen. Either great fiction, or really sad truth. By all means I recommend you look him up if you’re being serious. Especially if that’s the era you grew up in. You’re doing yourself a disservice.

        1. No doubt, no doubt. I’ve become more of a reader than a listener. I’ll read album reviews, listen to a snippet, and just not be impressed. Only certain cats I check for nowadays, like Killah Priest or whateva. Maybe Canibus, Nas — a few. But I’ll give the brotha his fair trial for challenging Jeezy’s relevance. Hell, I’ll even give Benzino his fair trial if magically he put out some dope shit. Peace.

          1. I feel you El, but you should check out his discography. Play that “Baby Face Killa”, then hit “E$GN”. And for shits and giggles, peep “Sittin Low”. Gibbs go, for real. From an ‘84 baby…….

          2. I feel it. There’s a lot of music that drops now. Doesn’t mean it’s music people want to listen to. Jeezy has a good discography. I found Gibbs through listening to Jeezy. I will say that Jeezy started to fall off for me between TM 103 and Seen It All. So I will say he isn’t as relevant as he used to be overall. Still has some great albums, and TM 101 is a classic album for me.

        2. We’re not talking about talent were talking about relevance. So, to say that young jeezy isn’t relevant and you sale significantly less than him means your completely irrelevant your self, not a smart move

          1. Peace to the Don. I paid my weekly fee to the underbosses. Did you get it? But yo, you hit it right on the nail what I was getting at. Jeezy for me holds weight because I dislike 90% of Southern rap, but can admit he’s had dope songs. And as I understand, Jeezy transitioned from the rap side to the business side. So, we can all agree to disagree. Peace. And if you get a chance, check out my irrelevant ass song on souncloud called “The Sickest Blues” by me, The El.

        1. Amen my dude jezzy has Certified Gold and Double Plat albums all 5 plus a num of crazy hit singles . Freedie has neva had a num one hit on billboard or a num one album . How soon do ppl forget but u right my brotha keep speaking on it

    2. Freddie’s last 2 albums are better than anything young jeezy has ever made. Ever. The quality hes putting out is on another level from what jeezy is even capable of. Could you imagine jeezy trying to go over 10 or 12 madlib or alchemist level beats and consistently murder every single one let alone while creating a cohesive theme through them all? Its laughable. He couldn’t even do it over some fucking kindergarten beats on his last album. It’s two different levels completely.

    3. Fuccin trash stop tryna get at a real nigga.. All that kendricc lamar rap u aint either stop my nigga jeezy is the nigga in the south..never heard anything from u until this bs genocide shit its trash..

    4. These idiots are hilarious. Jeezy solidified. He had his time and moved onto liquor, clothes, tv, water…evolution. but don’t wait until someone is obviously not focused on rap to try and kick dirt on them or no longer closely associated with gangsters to talk abt fighting. Gibbs wld not have said this in the BMF era or in the Trap or Die era. The Snowman is the snowman. He cld never drop again and is still too far ahead for Gibbs to catch up. 4eva.

    5. GIbbs told no lies….Jeezy is irrelevant now, only know for being engaged to Jeannie Mai now….Gibbs has lapped Jeezy a few times now. Has 2 certified classics under his belt and has many styles…Jeezy, not so much but Jeezy does have bangers. We gotta get rid of Akademiks, he brings nothing to the table.

      1. Jeezy got 4 classic albums. TM101, TM102, The Recession and TM103…culture changing relevant albums…wtf has Gibbs done that compares to those…a new K Dot is NOT gon have a Gibbs album as the backdrop skits for a classic like Good Kid M.A.A.D city. ????

        1. You can’t read. Gibbs said Jeezy is a legend but is irrelevant RIGHT NOW. If you bumping Jeezy last album right now you just a fanboy

    6. I mean, Jeezy was great and had a great run but musically he hasn’t really been cooking lately. His early catalog is awesome though and I still go back every now and then. Freddie Gibbs on the other hand got at least 3 dope project in a row dropped these last couple of years. So, even if its harsh by Freddie to say Jeezy is irrelevant now I get his point. Either way, Akademiks needs to shut the f up. Dude is a bum.
