“9 Signs That Prove The Grammys Don’t Know $#!^ About Rap” Listed By Complex

“9 Signs That Prove The Grammys Don’t Know $#I^ About Rap” is a video article from Complex that highlights what the publication says is the strained relationship between Hip Hop and the Grammys.

“We knew it was bad, but wanted to see how bad it really was,” the publication says.

“So we analyzed the Rap Grammys down to every last ‘shiny sippy cup’ handed out since ’89 by pulling together data about every award given to every artist in every Hip Hop category for every year since rap was introduced. Looking at the stats, it becomes clear that this isn’t our version of Rap, it’s the Academy’s version of Rap. And even though the Rap awards are usually televised, the Academy still treats Rap the same way they did back in 1989.”

In its story, Complex notes that Macklemore won three of the four Rap Grammys last year. Macklemore has more Grammys than 2Pac, Biggie and Nas, as well as more than “2Pac, Biggie, Nas, DMX, Busta Rhymes, KRS-One, Rick Ross, Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Big Pun, Jeezy, Ja Rule and Kendrick Lamar, combined.”

To put this into context, Macklemore’s The Heist album has earned more Grammys than such classic albums as Tupac’s All Eyez On Me, Biggie’s Ready to Die and Nas’ Illmatic.

Complex’s story also says that the nominations don’t make sense. For instance, it says that Iggy Azalea has more Rap nominations than eight-time Grammy-winner Lauryn Hill. Most of Lauryn’s nominations were in R&B. Additionally, Afroman has as many nominations as Redman.

The awards seem to all go to males, Complex’s story says. A female rapper hasn’t won a Rap Grammy in more than a decade. Two females have won Grammys for Best Rap Song: Alicia Keys and Rihanna. However, both were vocalists on a male’s song – and, both times, that male was Jay Z.

Eminem, Jay Z and Kanye West have won 41 of the 92 awards given in the four Rap categories – that’s just under half of the awards doled out when they were nominated, Complex says.

    1. Same shit every year…why even give the grammy attention? I get that it gives exposure but if you feel they don’t respect your craft then don’t respect them.

    2. No one’s disputing that the Grammy’s know nothing about rap…but some of this is just reaching. Like what woman rapper has deserved a grammy? Kim? Nah. Nicki? Nah. Missy? Maybe, but not over Eminem/Outkast/Kanye in their prime.

    3. This new generation of hip hop believes the Grammy is validation. I agree with John. I’m old school where awards and record sales never meant you were the dopest( m.c. Hammer, Vanilla Ice anyone?). In the words of Public Enemy from the song Terminator X To The Edge Of Panic….”Who gives a fuck about a goddamn Grammy?!”

    4. Yeah, Grammys don’t know shit about hip hop. But why is anyone in hip hop watching expecting them to? And why is anyone making it about hip hop in particular? You think Grammys know anything about Rock or Metal? Anybody remember Jethro Tull getting the best Metal album over Metallica? Go back through history and count the awards of classic bands with legendary albums and you’ll find the same travesty that’s pointed out with Illmatic. It’s not that Grammys don’t know shit about hip hop. It’s that Grammys don’t know shit.

    5. Who cares about the Grammy’s, FUCK THE GRAMMY’S! Besides, there are no good rappers nowadays anyway. I’m not even sure why there’s still a genre called “hip-hop” because it doesn’t exist anymore. Call it “hip-POP” or find a new name for it.

    6. The GRAMMY and all other academy awards are all about controlling history. That’s why they give it to all the white artists. It’s a long con game. 2,000 years from now when students research this era, they will see that the academy honored the greatest artists, like Mackelmore and Eminem. When the history books are written, whites will be the greatest hip-hop artists of our time. Same way they have the world believeing Elvis is the king of rock when anyone from that era will tell you Elvis’ whole style was bitten off Chuck Berry. Half of you people are like, “Who is Chuck Berry?” See how they did that?

      1. That makes absolutely no sense. There will be recorded data of this shit everywhere, the Grammys will not be the sole document of all hip hop history you fucking idiot. And even if it were, Kanye West has won a ton already. Loads of black artists have. Fuck outta here, Immortal Technique.

      2. You forgot the 2nd part. By that time white people will be extinct through massive interbreeding. So they will be revered as forgotten pantheon of gods.

    7. That’s adorable, hip hop is figuring out that the grammys don’t really matter. Welcome to the rest of the music industry, retards.

    8. If you really sit back and think about. They are not going to nominate or give awards to mc’s who feed people’s brain because then if they win a grammy. People are going to go and listen to them and when they do they are going to be wtf, that’s whats going on over here and over there. Grammys with regards to hip hop is only for watered down stupid shit.

    9. LMFAO complex claiming someone else does not know shit about hip hop. Those guys are a fucking joke. However i do think bino should have got best rap album, and not eminem. (coming from an eminem fan).

    10. Grammy’s don’t know shit about Hip-Hop or Rap. What else is new?

What’s embarrassing about complex tho… Half of the legendary MC’s listed in the video had already ended their active careers and/or died by the time Grammy’s even started to give out awards for Rap.

I mean Biggie should have totally won that grammy in 1994 for best Rap Album right?

    11. Oh and Ja Rule should definitely have a bunch of grammy’s for his HUGE contribution to Rap/Hip-Hop right….smh these “journalists”
