XXXTENTACION achieved astronomical fame almost as quickly as his ascension was cut short. As if his striking appearance didn’t turn heads, his speaker-destroying Soundcloud hit “Look At Me” ensured all eyes were on the South Florida rapper in 2017. XXXTENTACION blew up thanks to his hit single “Look At Me,” which was first released in 2015 before gaining popularity in 2017. The song’s success was partly fueled by accusations that Drake had stolen X’s “Look At Me” flow on his More Life cut “KMT.”
The name XXXTENTACION means “unknown temptation.” In a 2017 interview on 103.5 The BEAT, the rapper explained, “For some time, the X was the only unknown numeral to me ... it’s like John Doe. And tentación is 'temptation' in Latin, so I actually just pushed the two together ... ‘cause I feel as if [unknown temptation is] what my life revolves around.”
XXXTENTACION was shot and killed in an apparent robbery in Deerfield Beach, Florida on June 18, 2018. He was shot multiple times in the neck.
XXXTENTACION’s girlfriend, Jenesis Sanchez, gave birth to their only son, Gekyume Onfroy, on January 26, 2019 — seven months after the rapper’s death.
In July 2016, XXXTENTACION was arrested and charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. He was arrested again that October for false imprisonment, witness tampering and aggravated battery of his girlfriend, who was allegedly pregnant at the time. He was released from jail on bail in March 2017.
