One of the slowest release weeks of the year ended with some shifts. The year’s biggest and best climbed back to the top, while artists like Lloyd Banks and Mike Posner climbed back onto the Top 200, after weeks away. It was a close race at the top, and should look like this for some time, as January and February has a history of being friendly to independent projects to get their moment in the sun.
Eminem’s Recovery climbed five more spots on the charts. As one of the year’s best-selling albums, the Aftermath Entertainment/Interscope Records release has now surpassed 3.4 million units sold domestically. The work features production from Alex da Kid, DJ Khalil, Just Blaze and Mobb Deep’s Havoc.
Close behind was Rihanna, who climbed seven spots. Her Loud album climbs towards platinum, with features from Eminem, Drake and Nicki Minaj.
DXnext alum Nicki Minaj climbed four spots with her Young Money Records debut Pink Friday. The effort out-sold the critically-acclaimed Kanye West album for a third straight week, which was released on the same November 22 date. Featuring both Nicki’s brand of singing and rapping, Pink Friday has appearances from will.i.am, Drake and Eminem.
Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy shot up 14 spots in the last week of the year. The Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam Records released topped numerous year-end lists for it’s lyrics, music, guests and mixing. West has been rumored to be releasing “All of The Lights” as his next single, which features Rihanna, Fergie and Elton John, among others.
Another big climb came courtesy of Atlantic Records’ Bruno Mars. The singer and producer, known for his work with B.o.B. and Cee Lo Green climbed 13 spaces with his debut Doo Wops & Hooligans. The album features the aforementioned Bobby Ray and Damian Marley.

The emcee and label owner’s latest album was released while he was incarcerated for probation violations earlier this year, involving drugs. Officially crossing the 330,000 milestone, the latest album from Tip features Kid Cudi, Scarface and Rocko, with production by DJ Toomp, Kanye West and Jake One.
Going from #40 to #20, Lil Wayne‘s digital-turned-physical 2010 release I Am Not A Human Being continues to succeed with the emcee now free. Selling over 660,000 units to date, the album could reach platinum this new year.
After a major drop last week, Diddy and Dirty Money’s Last Train To Paris bounced back 16 spaces in its third week on charts. Now at #27, Diddy’s first Interscope-backed album features Drake, T.I. and Rick Ross. The conceptual work is said to be soon getting remixes to popular tracks, featuring Lil Wayne, Mary J Blige and others.
In its second week, Ghostface Killah‘s Apollo Kids actually gained five spots to #109. With vocal appearances from Game, Black Thought and Wu brethren, the album also features production from Pete Rock, Sean C & LV and Scram Jones.
G-Unit’s Lloyd Banks returned to the charts after several weeks of absence. Banks’ EMI-distributed H.F.M.2 (The Hunger For More 2) is widely considered a comeback for the Queens, New York rapper. The album features Kanye West, Raekwon and Pusha T.

The reason why Eminem sells like he does is because 80% of his fanbase is made up of Punk Rock/Death Metal/Screamo/Alternative Rock music listeners, which we all know sell records over a Hip Hop album ANYDAY. If you go on a site reviewing an Eminem album I guarantee in the Comments section you will find a hige majority of posts that read like this:
1) “I really dont like rap music, but I listen to Eminem”
2) “To me I hate rap, but Eminem’s music is cool”
3) “I listen to Death Metal, but Eminem is the only rapper I like”
Hip Hop sales actually act different than any other form of music as well. If a rapper sells about 200,000 first week, his 2nd week sales will fall between 50%-80% and in its lifetime will barely go platinum, or maybe 850,000 total. But you take a Country, Rock or sometimes a Pop album that sells between 100,000 to 300,000 their debut week they go on to sell between 3.5 & 5 million. That’s how the audience of those forms of music buy their albums, so Eminem’s main audience will buy his albums in that manner as well.

I remember when The Message first came out and I went back to the East Coast for the summer back in early 80’s and I was shocked how many white kids on the east coast loved rap. Out here in Cali they didn’t get into rap until 85 when Run DMC and Beastie Boys were big, but the East Coast they were into earlier.
I remember when Thriller came out, you had guys that only listened to Funk and Soul and Jazz, Rock…everyone and I mean everyone loved Thriller and that was straight POP. That’s why I say EM is the best, he isn’t just for one group of music lovers, he hits everyone. Like Snoop said, when he made Kim, who no matter what race or music tasted didn’t feel like killing a bitch before? He made you feel it. Now these little kids want to bring race into it, but trust me, if you are great at something, everyone will listen. Pac was great, everyone listened just like EM.

Banks Cd is fire he’s doing ok for his album being undershipped. I dont know why they did a distribution deal with emi that label doesnt have any money to ship alot of albums to stores. They are counting only the physical coppies the rest of his album is being downloaded from itunes. I saw an about a month ago that Beamer, benz, bentley is over 700,000 worldwide just off itunes.Then you got the start it up single people buying off itunes, the i dont deserve you single off itunes, the anygirl single, and all the other hot songs on that album. So he’s doing well but he would be doing alot better if he had more promotion, and a better distributor to get a bunch of albums in the stores. When i went to get banks album there were only a few in the store, and there was alot of people asking where was banks album but they only had a few in stock so people was like fuck it. So if it wasnt in the stores you have to get it on itunes and alot of people dont have itunes or arent good with computers so if they cant have the cd they just be like fuck it then. The only good thing is they dont have to share the money it comes to them cause they’re independent. The’re next deal they will get a better distributor and have better promotion cause they will probably get distributed through def jam. They dont have to worry about an album being undershipped with them because they arent in crazy debt like EMI.
