Talib Kweli has dropped a new single, “She’s My Hero,” which addresses the case of 14-year-old Bresha Meadows. On July 28, 2016, Meadows reportedly shot and killed her abusive father, 41-year-old Jonathan Meadows. Kweli notes her resemblance to his own daughter and draws the similarities to the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who reminded him of his son.

“What struck me about this case was Bresha’s age,” the Black Star MC wrote in the SoundCloud link. “I express myself lyrically, so a lyric popped in my head while thinking about it – ‘Do you kill yourself or kill the monster thats making you suicidal, decisions to heavy for the mind of a child.”

Using the hashtag #FreeBresha, supporters of Meadow have rallied around her and set up a GoFundMe page for the family to help with legal fees.
