    1. Very well broke down, Murs. Aging up is a blessing for more reasons that can be counted. More years means more mileage which equals more experience. Not more experience in terms of just crafting rhymes, but with experience comes maturity, humility, and a greater awareness of yourself. More ups and downs to reflect on. Also worth noting, alot of rappers in their 40’s weren’t rapping for the money when they started out necessarily. There was no real money to be had at that point, unless you were LL or RUN DMC. There was a degree of pride about who was the nicest. Those days, it meant something to be the fastest kid on your street, the highest jumper, who could wheelie a bike the longest, etc. In some of those cases, nobody was watching but you and your friends. No social media existed. We were competitive and truly wanted to be the best in everything we did. The business end has really affected hip hop negatively from a originality perspective (biting off one another constantly). Anyways, plenty of discussion to be had on this topic. I’m a little upset you left Nas off of this list and chose to highlight Meth but not Ghost and Rae, but I guess I’ll let it slide lol.

    2. Interesting point of view and Murs mentioned he didn’t list everyone but how does The Lox not get a mention?

    3. The younger generation just threw away the need to have actual talent. Now anyone who can mumble n make noises on a beat is considered an artist. There is barely any music from millennials that gets universal acclaim. Where is the “miseducation” or “illmatic” from the current gen? It doesn’t exist

      1. Agree for the most part, but Good Kid, M.a.a.d City is definitely a classic. Definitely in the “Miseducation”, “Illmatic” category IMO.

      1. This isn’t an all time greats compilation. This is about those who are still actively performing and putting out music.

          1. I’ll give you the Kool Keith drops for ’16, but I should’ve worded my response differently. The categories were rappers over 40 who still make decent and/or dope music. Me personally, I don’t think Keith is either at this point, no shade just honesty. And Body Count is rock.

    4. Thank god you have mentioned Black Thought Murs cause if you didn’t I’d have to go all out. Anywayz how old is Murs himself? Cause he better then half of this list. Snoop? Eminem? Are you serious? I’d put 3:16 over any work those two put out in last decade. No Scarface, Nas, Common, Ghost on the list too. E-40 dope. I’d add Slick Rick the ruler but he missin. You lucky you mentioned Black Thought the GOAT

    5. The best rappers are over 40 becuase you are around 40 yourself and are biased and unable to progress beyond valuing the generation of music you grew up with. It’s nothing new: folks who were teenagers when Elvis came out couldn’t stand the Beatles and Beatles fans hated the Sex Pistols. LIke so many elder music listeners, you use old means to evaluate MCing such as technical lyricism (which often is the easiest part) but forget about delivery, content, unique flows, hooks and landing in the pocket with your flow. The hard truth is both Drake and Kendrick Lamar are going down as legends as the kids who are only 20 now listening to them will be washed up at 40 doing editorials like you and they will be complaining about the new kids dominating the game. Be careful with rejecting new innovators in hiphop music- it often kills the genre. The rejection from the old heads by not allowing a genre to change is why disco ended in the 70s and wasn’t also called house music and why punk rock died and didn’t have alternative and new wave included which were clear derivatives. The. new generation is actually better than their young generation MCs in many ways. The biggest knock against past MCs from the golden era will always be that there soundtrack contained obvious blatant samples of music relying on this for hooks and choruses instead of unique ones and there staccato flows often already sound very dated thanks to artist like Drake who are just better at sliding perfectly into the beats . Anyways, This is just classic old generation not understanding the young bucks. Nothing new. Get over it

      1. You do realize this video didn’t have anything negative to say about the new generation right? This was a salute to the elder statesmen in Hip Hop that we now have due to Hip Hop getting older. Bad music will die and good music will live on, regardless of the generation. Calm down and breathe homeboy.

      2. The hard truth is that Drake has a ghostwriter and us unqualified for legendary status. He is a product of an industry marketing plan= light skinned guy who raps to women over pop beats with just enough “street” features to keep him credible. Kendrick is the truth as is Big KRIT. Also, rappers stop talking about real stuff pertaining to black people because of their need for the corporate dollar and white acceptance.

      3. Lol disco ended because the people got tired of its repetitive party nature and needed something else. Rap will die like disco because there is no innovation. Once upon a time there like 100 rappers with legend status potential to choose from. Now? I can count on one hand with any new guys with potential and we all know who those are

    6. The new generation doesn’t care about skills it’s just all about the money. What the hell is mumble rap? It takes no skills to make noise on the track. Today’s rappers are completely controlled by the corporations. The rappers not the hip hop artists are willing to do anything to get money including wearing skinny jeans, dresses, blouses and loud ass colors. Hip hop artists have their own styles and don’t follow bullshit trends like (lil )kids. We love hip hop music because it’s not fad like rap music. Lil wayne and the rest of those wack rappers can’t survive without the radio because their so called music is just hot but not good. Hip hop artists are hot and good but the radio wants watered down bullshit like drake. Once the radio stops playing drake and others their careers will die because the music isn’t good but just hot. Smooth jazz, rock n roll and rap are poor reflections of real black music. Corporations want the most watered down music to sell but not the most creative. It takes time to figure out a good hip hop album. Time is money. Rap music is simple to understand like mumble rap that’s why the radio likes it so much. It’s easy to make money off of that junk. Long live to the greatest art form ever, HIP HOP MUSIC and death to the rap years 2000-2018.

        1. I can see your from the rap years not hip hop golden era. Rap should get their own genre of music because it’s not hip hop music. Rap is pop music. Hip hop music is popular but not never pop music. Corporation’s control your music. You conform to the industry because your rappers have no skills. Hip hop artists alway have skills with or without the radio. Rap is so called hot because it’s simple sh!t for the corporations to sell. Death to the rap years! Call your pop music something else it’s not hip hop, please.

    7. Bottom line is rap had more lanes back in the day, today has only one lane and its mumble and fill wit little boys acting tough and promoting drugs and they look a mess wit that badge of shame tatted all over their face they cant sell out large arenas because of the violence that follow them so sad J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar got a good thing going that’s like 1% of todays hip hop artist

    8. This was a pointless video and made no sense. The reason all good rappers are over 40 or close to 40 is because of white people. Eminem was like everyone else back then (mid to late 90s) but he blew cuz he was white. Then he took the fame and made 50 cent blow. Because of the way 50 cent blew it killed the spirit of hip hop and there has not been one good rapper that debuted after 50 cent (name one). Whereas before he came out you had a talented rapper debuting monthly. Hate to say it but benzino was right. The other reason is you cant have a good rapper born and raised during the internet age because everyone is the same cuz theyre all connected. I thought this was common sense.

      1. a talented rapper who debuted since 50? Uhh, Game? Kendrick? KRIT? But you are right that lately there is a severe lack of dope rappers in the mainstream.

      2. Kendrick, Big KRIT, Q, Lupe, bunch of A$AP, Joey, Chance, countless. But I know you wouldn’t agree this because you are such a close-minded dumbfuck, who stuck in your delorean type pre-00’s tiny-ass cave, complaining about every rapper on this planet today is wack, still claiming real hip hop head as much as you can. Common sense my ass.

    9. Murs you forgot to mention Masta Ace! 51 years old and still releasing pretty good albums and touring around USA/Europe on a monthly basis

    10. I feel like the fact we can even have this discussion is dope. There is lots of hip hop I love from all eras, and lots I don’t like as well. Let’s see what the future holds! Dope video Murs.
