Review: Eminem Earns The “Revival” Redemption He Sought With “Kamikaze”

Rewind the clocks back approximately 10 months and Eminem was wallowing in an extremely low point in his career. Not life per se; that would be the well-documented period where he nearly overdosed. However, at 45 years old, Marshall Mathers couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that the masses weren’t feeling his raps from his ninth studio album, Revival, at the time.

Let social media and popular score aggregator Metacritic tell it, the project was the biggest dud of his career and he was better off wallowing in his riches in whatever Detroit bomb shelter he’s been holed up in since the aforementioned overdose.

Ever the defiant Libra, Eminem has seemingly listened to the criticism, read all the negative articles and social media comments and used it to fuel Kamikaze, an album that crash-landed into the rapmosphere on August 31. And like its title alludes, the explosive project proceeded to fuck up all that we’ve come to expect from Em with noticeable in-pocket rhyme schemes atop traditional rap boom and bap composed by the likes of S1, Illa Da Producer, Mike Will Made It and more.

    [apple_news_ad type=”standard”]

So is Slim Shady back? Sure, in a sense. Despite running the narrative of fans and (ahem!) critics being too thick-skulled to absorb Revival’s supposed greatness into the ground, Kamikaze instantly assumes the identity that Em has taken heed to some of the weighted judgment on his artistry. On “The Ringer,” it could be argued not since The Eminem Show has an Eminem album opened with such conviction and command. From Lil Yachty to Mike Pence all the way back to Lil Pump and Charlamagne Tha God, the name drops are aplenty and his scorn is more focused than ever.

From there, the Shady onslaught is equal parts enjoyable and informative. When he spars with his new age descendant in Joyner Lucas on the fiery “Lucky You,” he admits “They’re askin’ me, “What the fuck happened to Hip Hop?” I said, “I don’t have any answers.” ‘Cause I took an L when I dropped my last album It hurt me like hell but I’m back on these rappers.” On “Stepping Stone,” those who have been down since day one get their closure on the D12 situation with ruminative wordplay. Even the clear-cut single “Venom,” scored for the potential blockbuster of the same name, is layered in real MC grit, making for a catchy ladle worth holding on to.

So is Kamikaze the definitive Eminem comeback? He’s been here for years and getting him to fully understand that the heyday of the dozens of rap legends he shouts out throughout the album has come to end (sans Lord Jamar, who’s among the firing squad who gets blasted on the bold “Fall”) is a conversation that will only go so far. He and his contemporary in Royce Da 5’9 show their age badly on the red-hot Tay Keith’s shoot dance track “Not Alike” by dousing it with rapidity-rap. And he’s still trying square peg his round hole “girl” records, mainly on the Jessie Reyez-featured “Nice Guy/Good Guy” couplet, which come off as “Kim”-lite yawners. As one of the greatest storytelling rappers of all-time, his imagination would have worked wonders for beefing up the album’s amenities.

When you siphon the fuel from the Revival backlash, it’s obvious that Detroit bunker still hasn’t given Marshall much to rap about but that shouldn’t negate the reality that Eminem has returned with a very solid body of work after being longed counted out as a venerable threat.

Rappers mentioned on the album who can’t lyrically compete need to puff on that shut-da-fuck vape and keep it moving. Fans clamoring for the old Marshall Mathers should stream the old album or hell, rent it from the library or something. After being faced with nothing to prove as the highest-selling rapper of all-time, Eminem’s found another challenge in perfecting the new style he’s put on display.

    Word to MCA.

    1. So much better than Revival, I don’t think it’s as good as his earliest albums, but his best since recovery, the beats are so much better, finally got rid of rick rubin, he’s not trying so hard to just make rhymes, he made sense with his lyrics, and his natural rhyming skill enhanced his lyrics rather than feeling forced

    2. Like all the tracks except “Kamikaze” and the hook on “Greatest” 11 & 12 seem like fillers but are good.

Best track is “Fall” followed by “The Ringer” and “Lucky You”

“Stepping Stone” was done really well and FINALLY answers so many peoples questions and dream scenarios, D12 will never put out an album with Eminem.

The Royce track is cool, just really dont feel the beat. Solid Album for sure.

      1.MMLP
      2.Em Show
      3.SSEP
      4.Recovery
      5.Kamikaze
      6.Relapse
      7.Encore
      8.Revival
      9.MMLP2
      10.Infinite

      1. Well said. I don’t like MMLP2, and find this is Em’s best album since Recovery. While Kamikaze is not without faults, I disagree with the HHDX reviewer on Not Alike – thought it was fire. (Then again, I thought Revival had some decent deep cuts… Tragic Endings, In Your Head). He skewered everyone he came at on the album except Joe Budden. Decent diss, but not enough imo.

    3. Angry, funny and to the point. He has had a few bad albums but the reviewers for this album must be some enya listening bitches. Royce and Em showing their age? Gtfo. And nice guy? That track is a fucking banger

      1. I don’t like the Jessie Reyez song, but Not Alike was dope. I don’t see how it is “badly showing their age” by any means

        1. Because Look Alive is one of the biggest songs of the year and no one will ever hear this song because it’s not swagger p enough. It doesn’t sound right

    4. Not a return to form but a huge leap forward. His life is not as chaotic as it once was, so don’t ever expect another Marshall Mathers LP. But he’s at his best when he’s frustrated with himself and how others treat him. Back then it was many things, but now it’s just the rap game and critics. I didn’t enjoy the songs with Jessie Reyez, but the rest of the album was a lyrical onslaught. Yes he came off as a bitter old man, but a bitter old man with BARS, and finally some decent beats!

    5. This album is the Stan service we all wanted. Its tight from start to finish. Thanks for listening to our complaints Slim. Holding AOTY for now.

    6. Did he really tho? The rhymes are dope, but this is a man scared of losing his place in the game. What other legend feels like that? Never seen a rapper’s INFLUENCE fall off so hard. I know some of y’all will hate this part right here, but the Trump curse strikes again.

      1. What legends Are you reffering to?
Pac and Biggie Who died way to young to be afraid to loose their place.
The carters Where bee raps Harder than jay?
He had to sell his last album through a mobile phone so that the Numbers wouldnt be low. And now He had to bring his wifey on this album because she brings the Numbers.
Snoop with all his Ghost writers and rasta lion?

Ice cube is the only Legend that just keeps on delivering without the Need to prove anything.

Em is bringing shady back. Thats What this album is about. He dont give a shit about Who or What. He just spits. He has clearly wanted to Go at MGK for the last 5 years But shady was burried with the pills and booze. He’s back now. Cleaning out the closet. Go to Sleep.

      1. I bet if he was not white you would be all over it. The guy spits on this album. Funny how a 46 year old is killing all these young ones at this time. New hip hop sucks, this year has sucked for hip hop just like the last 10 years. Eminem has brought fire back to the game. I have not liked his past few albums but this one is hot af.

    7. This album is a lyrical juggernaut. To not give this at least a 4, is pure stupidity. Barz upon barz upon flowz upon flowz….

    8. Finally a fair review. All the other reviewers are clearly hating to get clicks. This isn’t a perfect album but it is good, it’s rap at its finest. If you think this album is trash, what state is hip hop in?

    9. Em’s always been more pop than Hip-Hop and that’s not really my thing. Better than the last one but that’s a low bar. The flow’s not as bad as it has been on the last few records but it’s still pretty bland.

    10. Y’all blacks really mad a white boy is the the GOAT. Let it go man. The only thing you guys got us beat at is sports and you guys got bigger dicks. Other than that we good to go!

        1. You make a very valid point sir or ma’am. Music is definitely a matter of taste. The fact that there are a wide variety of artists who all offer different styles, skill sets, and abilities Is great because we are all in search of something different. Our lifestyles and upbringing often go hand in hand when choosing an artist of our liking. When taking this into consideration, it would be unfair to criticize someone of their opinion of an artist. However, To say Eminem is viewed as an awful artist comes as a shock. I do believe there is no denying this mans talent, dedication and love for Hip-Hop. His story telling ability and overall skill in my opinion is bar none. And I say this from an unbiased viewpoint as he is not even my favorite artist. But as long as he has more to say through his art form, I will definitely be tuned in.

          1. I hear you, and no one is denying his talent. But his music – especially in the last decade and a half – has been terrible. That is obviously subjective, but it is valid as an opinion as any other. Peace

    11. The day Eminem loses his ability to rap is the day I force my dads thick throbbing stinky meat pop down my throat and slurp every drop of sticky icky out his soft man sack.

    12. Pussy boys these days are shitting themselves. They are not used to confrontation (bless). This little zanny or whatever his name is looking like a cock sucking retard with his pink fluffy backpack holding his strobe light dildo.
At least em is making rap aggressive again. You wanna hold hands and sing kumbayah then go find that Canadian wej (backwards) or the rainbow haired little pussy.
Album kicks ass, thank you Slim! Best album since relapse.

    13. You guys are all stuped if you think eminim is still a good raper he lost his skills years ago dum ass. Komakozie is attempt to be relevant and it not work. Idiots.

    14. Overall it’s a really great album. I like it more than “Recovery”, “The Marshall Mathers LP 2” and of course “Revival”.
Favorite songs: “Greatest”, “Not Alike”, “Lucky You”, “Stepping Stone”, “Fall”.
Least favorites songs: “Good Guy”, “Nice Guy”.

    15. This album is a serious threat for Album of the Year, in what’s been an amazing year for rap, and a return to form for Eminem. There is only one song I don’t really like, Nice Guy, and even that I found hilarious the first time I listened to it. Not sure how Not Alike “shows their age,” but okay.

    16. Actually would give it 4.5 if I had the option. Most tracks are fire a couple I tend to skip. Overall shit’s on point.

    17. 3/5, it’s good to see some intensity and that his lyricism is still there, but the machine-gun flow and modern stop/start flow don’t suit his intricate lyrics – we get it you rapped fast on rap god and now you think it highlights your skill, when it actually detracts. the ‘trendy’ beats are also kind of weak too. I’d like to have seen it be more like stepping stone, proper beats and a proper flow.

and please please stop talking about your love life and relationships, it’s a beta-male overdose, it’s weird hearing songs like that when you grew up listening to sslp and mmlp, makes you look at him differently.

    18. It was a great album. I am sooo looking forward to the showdown between Eminem and Joseph Budden. Routing for Eminem but i know that Joe will not be an easy opponent to defeat

    19. I don’t see how this album has at least a 4.5 honestly. How the fuck are way weaker projects getting a higher rating than this! Proves that what 50 Cent said was true…. he said that hiphop is mainly black music and people can’t get over the fact that a white boy does it better than most to ever do it. Put color aside and give the man credit for spitting vicious bars in a day where emo (cry baby) rap has taken over! Couple weak tracks on the album but I give it 5 for displaying the dedication to lyrics and the art form of hiphop!

    20. I don’t see how you can’t all love Eminem like I do so I’m going to claim reverse racism and cry like a little bitch 5/5

    21. How do you give the album 3.9? I’ve seen 3.5 but 3.9 that’s some hating shit, its either 3.5 or 4 but to just make up this 3.9 number is ridiculous like how do you account to this decimal rating and not just round it off, it actually reveals the hating of the reviewer, obviously bias, like “should i give this a 4? na fuck eminem 3.9 cause its too good to be 3.5” and I don’t even wanna speak on the actual quality of the album cause i don’t care if you didn’t actually like it but instead point how that rating was total bullshit.

    22. 5/5

definite redemption after the dumpster fire of the last album.

also Budden is hilarious… this albums first week outsold Joe’s whole career.

    23. “He and his contemporary in Royce Da 5’9 show their age badly on the red-hot Tay Keith’s shoot dance track “Not Alike” by dousing it with rapidity-rap.”

That sentence exposes the true hating ass sentiment of the reviewer. One of the best songs on the album i wish more rappers would spit like this over these kinda tracks instead of rappers slurring and mumbling sounding like they strung out from heroin and percocets. Smh Trent Clark what a hater wow.

    24. This album is a 3 out of 5 at best. The bars are there but they’re often empty. It’s like Eminem has lost his pocket presences and hopes of just over rapping for the hell of it. Lets be clear although a legend he never was the GOAT and the majority trying to force it down the cultures throat has finally back fired.

    25. If we compare the content and emotion on this to MMLP you can see that Em doesn’t have much to speak about however the level of skill on Kamikaze is the best he has ever been.
I understand how new school fans might not appreciate this album since most of the quotables flew over their heads and isn’t appropriate for Instagram captions.

If you really had to breakdown the score to individual ratings for Flow, Wordplay, Production etc. He might score above 4 very easily.

    26. I think 3.9/5 is a sincere and mostly objective rating, unlike youtube’s “music nerd” thennedledrop that apparently hates eminem and gives kamikaze 4/10…

      1. Yeah, I can’t agree with him on that one. He does explain why he doesn’t like it, and I understand his points. But personally, I really like this album.

    27. It took me some time to get into Relapse, but after all I played that album quite a lot. But with Kamikaze… A ton of listening during the very first week alone! It has some misses (Nice Guy and Good Guy), but the other than those two tracks… Just wow. WOW. I’m being honest – I was afraid this was just another Revival. I simply hate that album, never could get into the overall vibe of it. Boy, I’ve never been so wrong! Delivery, a million different flows that fits with the production so effortlessly compared to the constant off-beat thing going on Revival. Needs a million replays to hear, let alone actually get everything he says. I like the beats too, especially how they are being used against the artists that got dissed on this album. Mixing/mastering isn’t as flawless as I expected, which is weird for such a big artist (Revival still has it way worse, that sounded very amateurish and unfinished), but the project is everything I asked for. 4.5/5

    28. I’d say it’s a 4/4.5 – 5 but I’ll give it a 5 just to try and even out the haters’ ratings! I’d give it a 6 if I could lol.

      1. That shitty meme holds 9 of the top 25 selling rap albums rn and 19 of the top singles overall. Most of them are post 8 mile. U right, wat a meme bruh.

      1. No replay value?
        The Ringer
        Lucky you ft. Joyner Locus
        Greatest
        Fall
Not A like ft. Royce da 5’9
        Kamikaze
        Good guy
        Venom
If you think the above mentioned songs does not have a replay value then i don’t know what you want..you better listen to “kiki, do you love me!”
And even Nobody and Nice Guy has a catchy and unique sound. There is no problem in experimenting something new.
Music is an art and an artist can deliver his art in any shape or form
        Album is 4.5/5

    29. Not Alike was the best track on Kamikaze. Remove Good Guy/Okay Guy/Normal, this is his strongest body of work since the Eminem Show. His flow and word command throughout are better than anything I’ve heard. Four out of five stars, remove the 3 tracks I mentioned and it’s a 4.5 out of 5. The hook on Greatest is extremely catchy. Also, the dark production is fantastic and best prod since MMLP. Thank god there’s no Rick Rubin sabotage on this one. The only good production we ever got from him was Berzerk. No one in rap comes even CLOSE to Eminem’s flow and rhyming here. Can’t wait to hear him rip all these rappers and Kesashi676 or whatever that fucks name is. he’s back on top again. And thank goodness Joe Budden and Charlemagne were actually brutally honest about how weak Revival was, if yes man lied through their teeth and said it was good, and Eminem would’ve gotten complacent.

    30. Please, please, PLEASE – and I am being entirely serious here – kill yourself. Commit suicide. End your miserable existence.

    31. 36 people voted this album is as good as Illmatic, Me Against the World, Straight outta Compton, Reasonable Doubt, Radio, Doggystle, Chronic.

Don’t tell me you’re not just dickriding stans.

      Here’s a 1/5 to offset your bullshit.

    32. Em’s best album in a while, but this generation dont listen to lyrics anymore anyways. Its about colorful gimmicks and dumbed down music.

      1. A new start when ur 45 years old and cant hold substance for a single song? Outside of dissing other artists again, rhyming words incredibly well without getting any sort of point across, yelling, talkin crap about women, and yelling…what form of eminem is back? He hasnt held depth since recovery. Budden had 7 good albums the past decade, em had 2, plus slaughterhouse, joe was right, he was better the past 10 years. Eminem is redundant n either sounds boring or irritating every song…the only new start is his 45 year old ass moving to the nursing home. Smh, too many stans

        1. Uh. I would argue he never held substanance at all aside from Recovery. That’s kind of been one of the things people have disliked about him from the start. Try again!

    33. hiphopdx gave the beyonce and jay-z album a 5/5, they give Kamikaze a 3.9. hiphopdx needs to fire their entire staff and start over.

    34. This album offered nothing of substance. It was 45min of the typical I hate mumble rap / I’m better than all of you bullshit. This felt desperate, and musically it had not really much playback value. He can rhyme words, but that’s it. Eminem doesn’t want to evolve his sound to today’s wave, so bashing millennials is easier. I ain’t even trying to be a hater, I was just so appalled listening to this.

      1. Well that’s kind of what Eminem has always been. Last album he genuinely tried. Eminem is always changing and never does the same thing but he doesn’t like his direction. Why is it the you’re entitled to call him an old man but he can’t say that wack shit is wack. We all know it, that’s his entire mantra. He says shit no one else has the balls to say. And that’s not desperation you hear, it’s anger. He put this album together in about 3 months. He’s obviously not in the best mood.

        1. Well, if he’s always angry, especially about little things that he doesn’t like, has he really evolved? Yes, he’s rapping over trap beats, and has flashes of meaningful moments, but he’s been making music since recovery that is just not unique or that good. I’m calling him an old fuck because he can’t accept that the game has moved on from 2003. Artists in their 40s like 2chainz, Juicy J, Hov and Kanye are adapting and doing what works for them. Em can’t accept that he’s not the gatekeeper anymore and needs to make changes to his sound, content, etc., it feels disconnected and not melodic.
What does he say here that no one else is saying? Lots of rappers and entertainers are criticizing trump and his policies, a lot of older rappers are insulting this generations rappers, and he talks about other things that other artists say in their music. Remember, he’s a megastar deeply embedded in the industry. Maybe in the early days he said stuff others didn’t say, but I don’t think today he is doing that.
I believe it’s both desperation and anger. I don’t know about you, but I think putting out a fuck you everybody album less than a year after revival got bad press by nearly every artist/personality seems desperate. He can’t control the narrative like he once did, and he admits it in his music, right now he’s trying to do anything to get himself back to where he once was and doesn’t know what to do.
Hope that helps, I’m just trying to be as objective about this as possible.

    35. This album would be really good if Kamikaze(the song)good guy and nice good weren’t on it. Those songs are terrible. Not bad like really bad. Also it’s little to no substance on this album. Other then getting at this new generation and trash rappers( which I love buy the way) this album has no real substance. Which gives this little to no replay value.

    36. FINALLY! A reviewer who actually listened to the album and gave an objective review. Kudos to you for not playing into the narrative everyone in the media has been hopping onto the last week. I have no problem with your 3.9. I gave it a 5 because I’m an Eminem fan and I think he sounds more refreshed and rejuvenated on this album than he has in awhile.

      1. Your not a Fan you must be a Stan for that comment. I have all of Eminem’s albums not the digital or playlist bullshit the actual albums and I can tell you this album does not deserve a 5. Its better than Revival forsure but in no way is this a classic album. Its good to see Eminem came back to senses. This is his best work since relapse but its not as good as that either. Eminem is still good but past his prime. You and Eminem would serve better if you guys made piece with that.

    37. Another super corny Em album, dude couldn’t pick a hip hop beat if it bit his leg. Corny hooks and no replay value unless you in Junior HS. He is so weak he let that other corny dude rip him a new one. lol 2 Mics !

      1. Shut up ? the whole motherfucking album was staight fire, you are entitled to your own opinion but your opinion is wrong ?

    38. Blown away that a hip hop website (and so many others) would critisize a rapper for “rappity rap” (ie complicated ryhme schemes that very few others in the game can or do..do) so now pure mc skill is now seen as a weakness – Get tha fuck outta here….

the fact that you highlight that both em and royce show their age by engaing in “rappity rap” says it all about what is now considered quality hip hop…

im a self confessed stan who even found things to like about revival but I can still be objective and admit that eminem has never been strong on “content” or social commentary. . its been severely lacking given his age…. but when his “rappity rap” (still dont get how this is a slur against a rapper) is this good…THIS GOOD.. then you have to give it the plaudits it deserves.

its not a perfect album by any means (still deserves a 5 in this day and age though and thats what its getting from me….) but like all his best work it rewards repeated listens.

all that being said agreed with a lot of what Joe budden said in his podcast…..I think he could have made a great response track and think its a cop out to use the “i aint replying to no 5 bars” line…. also give MGK his due that was a decent response…..

looking forward to seeing what shady does next.

      #rappityrapforthewin

    39. Still bumping this, find it has a lot of replay value tbh. What a surprise when he isn’t stop starting his flow, and picks good beats

    40. Solid album. Step up from Revival which I did like. But this is about Kamikaze. It was nice to see Em spitting lie he suppose to. Could of did with out three tracks though. Maybe two. But out of 5 i give it a 3.5. Album is dope.

    41. This album was not tight. But Its obviously not because of skill. Rap is wack now so you gotta rap on the today sounding beats. I’m into Jazz again.

    42. when he gon promote Westside Gunn and Conway ? y the fuck he even sign Griselda he aint done shit for them apart from the bet cypher and eminem ruined that smh fuck mgk corny ass btw not worth a response

    43. After a week of listening to this, I’m calling this his 3rd best album, behind MMLP and The Eminem Show. This bangs front to back..

    44. Unlistenable. It’s like Eminem is angry at the very concept of musicality. One of the worst rappers putting out material today, and that’s saying something.

    45. Best to worst

      MMLP-classic
      Relapse- classic
      TES-classic

      Kamikaze-great
      SSLP-great
      Recovery-very good
MMLP2- good especially the bonus songs
      Revival-decent. Better than its reputation
Encore- some great songs but too many skippable tracks

All solid projects. Relapse most underrated. Great production and psychotic stuff. Refill just as good too. *BME would be just below SSLP. *Infinite not ranked on list

    46. Welp, I’m a Stan since I was 9 years old. I love all of his albums
Whether personal albums like revival or the Slim shady albums like Kamikaze
It’s so awesome, beats are amazing and wordplay and punchlines are phenomenal
Only one thing, slim shady is back to murder everyone in the music industry

      1. Being exposed to shitty music at such a young age… you never stood a chance. We failed you as a society. I’m sorry.

    47. Eminem has upped his whole shit again. He may not make as many songs with the emotional weight his early classics had where he was young with more problems. But he has never been a better rapper. The dizzying amount of flows, insane rhymes, voice changes, adlibs, fill ins, doubles. This man delivered a classic performance on the mic. What a vocal performance. Clear, booming, his energy is way up. Em went fucking crazy on this shit. If you listen to this guy go off on “the ringer” and youre into lyric heavy hip hop and youre not impressed i dont know what to say. Em should keep going in this lane just get hot beats and rap and simplify the whole thing. This man is dangerous and fun to watch when hes got room to work over stable production and hes not trying to do anything but deliver a quality rhyme. Em released the album i thoughr was coming in 2009 when he dropped relapse. Hes mocking the game, poking fun, blowing shit up. Eminem at his best here ladies and gentleman. When hes gone he will be missed and years from now when looking back on his discography the kamikaze album will be a shining moment where he came back to right the ship with a nuclear bomb of beats and rhymes.

Respect to marshall mathers a living legend who still goes out with something to prove when hes already solidified his place.

      CLASSIC shit.

    48. I’ve listened to the album and thought it was good, though I feel before slaughterhouse disbanded they should have collaborated more, at least on his albums and not just his best of mixtape album. Hell, get some of the artists from TDE. Anyway, it was good, the last three tracks I could do without, same with the diss to Joe since he was just being honest for the show he was on, and I agreed with the points he made and so did many others, but if that what it takes to deliver a decent album, then we’ll take it.

    49. ratings are either 1s or 5s, lol that’s when you know its good. best em album since em show and personally my favorite lyrical album since gkmc. i don’t expect anyone to agree, just know what shakes me to the core and i felt it here.

    50. Thank you, Eminem. This is the album I’ve been wanting to hear from you since the Eminem Show. Em has for sure listened to all the negative feedback from that Revival train wreck and a few of his previous albums and channeled it all into this. He took away the abundance of pop features, took away Alex da Kid and Rick Rubin, has guest rappers actually rapping verses, and best of all, Em is back with a vengeance. I also like how he kept it shorter than usual, ends up with way less filler, which was also an issue with his past few albums. “Nice Guy” and “Good Guy” are the ones I’m referring to. My real rating is a 4.5 but I’m giving it a 5 since I’m very happy with this.

    51. Overall There were only 3 songs I didn’t really care for. Good thing they’re all bunched up at the end. Didn’t really like Nice guy or Good Guy but not that I hated them just not my thing. Venom was hot Garbage though. Everything else was either solid to really Good.

    52. Eminem has always been an inflammatory rapper — a provocateur, a firebrand against society — and he nails it with this album. You’ll notice something’s up with all the extreme disagreement in the ratings that Em’s regressing to his past-prime when it was him and his crew against the world. Sure, there are flaws and some hypocrisy, but when has those factors ever stop Em? The OGs remember how Em was in the past, how the world reacted, and now we’re glad to see him back to cause further mischief. Everyone “hating” on him right now will be the same sheep that hop on his bandwagon a decade later; just like today. It has happened before and it will happen again, and I’m simply glad to be a part of this historical moment.

        1. Thanks for proving my point 🙂 — gives this album 1/5 and can’t even use the Google search bar.

          re·gress
          verb
          rəˈɡres/Submit
          1.
return to a former or less developed state.
“art has been regressing toward adolescence for more than a generation now”
synonyms: revert, retrogress, relapse, lapse, backslide, slip back

Notice the word “or” meaning there is multiple ways to use this word. Now it makes sense why you rated this album so lowly.. probably all the bars went over your head.

            1. The literal definition doesn’t make sense? What sort of logical contradiction is it? Keep talking out of your ass — the exempler sentence even uses it as a form of going reverting rather than entering a less developed state. Just because you don’t understand or are incapable of understanding the nuances does not mean it’s a contradiction.

            2. The contradiction occurs within the context of the sentence itself. Regression has inherently prejoritive connotations, particularly in regards to artistic development. One’s prime is typically a singular event or moment along the course of that development. So it is problematic to say that a) one could return to it, and b) that this would constitute a regression. This is a very stupid argument that we’re having and neither of us is the better for it. I wish you all the best.

            3. Denotation > connotations in any sense linguistically, so your argument crumbles immediately. Connotation depends on context not that there is a definite linkage for a particular definition based on a particular setting (e.g. your argument that regression is pejorative for artistic development — this is total ass-grab nonsense btw). Why is it problematic to say one can returning to one’s prime especially if we’re not clear whether it is relative or absolute? Even if it an absolute statement, it’s still possible to have multiple absolutes (although we can’t numerically standardize a rapper’s talent as it is entirely subjective). This is another sophistry that you haven’t even presented an argument for. Yes, I agree, it is a stupid argument for you because you’re constantly making shit up. I just like to call bullshit out when it needs to be. Also, please note the difference between regressing/returning to one’s prime and to return to one’s prime. I said the former and you’re arguing the latter.

            4. Your entire position is undermined by one simple question: what is the opposite of regression? Once you’ve answered that there is simply no way for you to win this argument, and I have no interest in continuing it. Feel free to shout into the void.

            5. An antonym for regress is advancement and the antonym for advancement (there are multiple meanings as well) is return. checkmate.

    53. Let’s be real: it’s not very good. It’s better than the last one but the last one is one of the worst records of all time. Eminem has never made great music. He has technical skill and he used to be funny. That’s it. He made pop music very successfully for a few years but he has put out nothing but dire music for the better part of the last two decades. It’s a shame because his records, although never great, were entertaining in the early days. That time has long since passed.

        1. I haven’t actually listened to much of either of those artists. I’m more of a Hip-Hop traditionalist and don’t enjoy the pop-oriented stuff that much, which probably partially accounts for my distaste for much of Eminem’s music.

    54. Best album of 2018… the legend himself has brought lyrical rap into the running of songs. This album was a step in the right direction for hip hop.

    55. Some songs were lacking, not as much content as before but he only really released this album cause the last one, so I knew what he’s overall goal was.

    56. One of the greatest lyrical albums; plus the creativity that Em displayed on top of the beats. Album not for commercial but for real hip hop heads; it’s not all about hits but it’s about the culture. This album will age well .. like wine.. another classic .. people just have to let it sink in

    57. It’s so funny how the ratings are either 5 or 1.
If you are a hip hop or rap music fan, there is no way you give it 1. I mean if you are a fan of this genre you can surely find something in at least one song of this whole album to like so rating it 1 just doesn’t make sense. Funny tho
My suggestion to 1ers; Quit listening to rap/hip hop.

    58. Dope album. I’ve been banging this in the car since it dropped. 3.9-4.0 Review is On Point like house of pain.

    59. Kamikaze shows em as the literal-act-of-rapping GOAT, but lacks so much in awareness of today’s vibes. the knowledge is so-so. positives tho i’m cuing up Royce da 5’9″ soon.

    60. Trent is such a fucking racist. We should start referring to him a Trent Jamar, fucking racist twat.

      1. Are you Charlie’s twin who talks the same, posts the same comment verbatim at the exact same time? No Way it’s a coincidence.

    61. I would’ve gave it a 5….but this ain’t The Carters

Looking at what I just wrote makes me wonder why I clicked on this in the 1st place

    62. NOWADAYS EVERYBODY WANNA TALK LIKE THEY GOT SOMETHING TO SAY…more relevant than ever! A world full of hip hop experts…If someone like his style, voice or beats it’s more a matter of taste…cheers!

    63. This is complete garbage. I guess I can see why some people like it because a crappy Eminem is better than nothing, I guess.

      1. Troll much? What’s so crappy? Have you even listened to the album? Go bump your lil yachty or pump or whatever the southern garbage of the day is.

    64. Those beats are so fucking wack, who cares about who the fuck raps on them. Rap music has become clown shit period, straight up. Get the fuck outta here with that autotune hook, weak plastic ass drums, melodic sing sang shit. You cant even hear no difference between pop music and supposed hardcore rap albums no more.

    65. His rap complexity, skill set and outrage at the state of hip-hop is unquestionable, what is missing is some of the critics who are in their twenties or early thirties and just flat out promote, defend and endorse WACK SHIT, and do not have a clue of what Hip hop (which is a culture) is, NOT MUMBLE RAPPERS OR PEOPLE WITH GHOST WRITERS SINGING…and the beat is more relevant then the artist. I gave this album a 4.5. Like the TTCQ album IT IS SORELY NEEDED!!

    66. Eminem is one one of the few along side of Hov who are the two top 5 bracket mc’s that can still drop a good album and get the buzz from it. Not dissisng but cats like Nasty Nas Rakim KRS etc can’t even acheive that and those guys are hip hop heavy weight legends as well who have nothing to prove either. So whenever a legend drops an album and doesn’t need the money anymore just respect the good ignore whatever you didn’t like because at the end of the day legends are legends and whatever greatness they dropped before in the first place to give them that title still exists and won’t magically get erased.

    67. #G.O.A.T. #Eminem
Rap music has gone downhill for a while now ,same with most Rock music. I’m no fan of country music but I hear a lot of people saying it’s become mostly garbage too.

    68. This album is amazing. To use the mumble rap style in a way that will attract all the new gen but at the same time diss all of them after the fact they bought the album hahaha priceless. Its refreshing to get a taste of the old Slim.

    69. Really this album is a 4.4/5 or a strong B+. If he replaced “Normal” and “Nice Guy” w/ two more bangers with boom bap beats via Primo/ApolloBrown/Statik/PeteRock/9thWonder/Daringer/Madlib/BlackMilk/Nottz/Alchemist and Good Guy (underrated AF imo as it’s poetic brilliance and melodic dope sample) was longer song. If that happened this album would be an A for me but it’s a B+. Nice Guy only track that I hated. I now want Em over some classic hiphop beats via Alchemist, DJ Muggs, Primo, ApolloBrown, StatikSelectah, Daringer, Nottz, etc continuing to go at people’s heads mixed with some great content tracks like “Stepping Stone” (minus that 30 second singing part of the verse in verse 3).

These 8 songs below imo all dope keepers especially given 45 year old clearly past his prime Eminem. If you don’t like those songs below you simply hate Eminem or dope lyricism. This could of been a 10 track album with the 2 skits and these tracks below and it would be an A short album also imo (just make Good Guy longer and maybe add another track or 2 with other ill emcees I’ve always wanted to see Eminem work with ELZHI & BLACK THOUGHT). To balance out all the hate I’ll give this a 5/5 as this deserves to be in the 4-4.5/5 range imo if you are being objective. Follow me on twitter @SuperDopeHipHop let’s talk about it!

      The Ringer
      Lucky You ft Joyner Lucas
      Fall
      Good Guy
      Not Alike ft Royce
      Greatest
      Stepping Stone
Venom (grew on me didn’t like at first)

    70. The Album showcased Ems lyrical talents. His duo “Lucky You” with Joyner unleashed an extraterrestrial style few could replicate. There are a solid number of tracks, enough to rate this album 5/5 in my opinion. Not every song has to be hit to spark a Fire.

    71. 4.6 for me. The Album seems like an angrily put out Eminem piece (Which he is best known for) but there’s just too much lyrical power inside the man plus there’re still a few songs where he jokes around as some would love. As long as you enjoy lyricism and you are a rap fan, this is easily the best rap album out this year

    72. Who in their non-rating albums properly mind, rated this anything less than a 4 or 5….after everything has been added up you telling me a f * * *ing 3.9 is the highest that its received. I guess he was right fools are to mentally retarded to understand the bars being spit on this fire album…

      1. The fact the album comes out of the gates blasting critics, it’s not surprising critics don’t care much for it. This album got me back into listing to Em, shit’s fire.

    73. Real hip hop point blank period. Still untouchable at 45 years old. Hate it or love it, critics and shallow minded people will only make Em put out more fire. Get real people, one of the greatest, if not the greatest, just gave us quality music once again

    74. Dope as fuck, still catching new bars. All the lil whatever fans hate the fact the shit they listen is shit and one of the best called all of them out. Critics have no real talent, but writing an article on their feelings about the album, but everyone is not alike.

    75. The album is amazing. Of course, there are a couple of things I’m not so crazy about but overall, it’s a big improvement and much better than Revival.

    76. One of his besy albums.even though I mostly listen to r&b and hip hop I really enjoyed this…keep it up eminem

    77. Bars and rhyme scheme for days on this. The replay value is high. Out of 13 tracks I’m banging 10. The beats can be doper but they are good though. Dre needs to bless up with some tracks actually produced by him. This is better than his last few joints and a bunch of the bullshit out nowadays.

    78. I think Em’s bars in this album are his cleanest, most complex in years. He managed to correct nearly every problem that made Revival mediocre (at best) while maintaining his unbeatable lyricism. It’s also nice to see the return of “Shady-esque” songs, which have defined Em’s career and many worried may have been gone forever.

    79. Comment section filled with bias Stans. No one who knows anything about Hip Hop would give this a 5 out of 5

    80. people making multiple accounts just to give it 1/5. just go fuck puffy jealous retards lol. fuck stan, fuck slim shady, fuck eminem, fuck marshal mathers, fuck kamikaze, fuck everything, fuck you and fuck y’all.

    81. Amazing album that truly puts slim back into the discussion of the greatest rappers of the 10’s. Not as good as something like the Eminem show, but what can even beat that? I want to put it on a 4/5 because it’s not as good as some of his old legend albums, but its way better than anything out there today and therefore it deserves a 5/5

    82. This album is ? not a Stan but man these layers of bars are next level. This dude has to be the, or at least between the g.o.a.times

    83. This album is the formula Eminem needs to stick to. Short and to the point. It really is one of his best releases in years, even with a few songs I could’ve done without.
