Nicki Minaj – Pink Friday

The pink wigs, the Barbies, the eyelash bats and British accents. All of these external eccentricities have been off putting for some who feel Nicki Minaj isn’t fully a “Hip Hop” artist. Well, the truth of the matter is, she isn’t, and that’s exactly what Pink Friday reveals. Nicki Minaj sees the Hip Hop landscape and has altered it to craft her own success story, whether you like it or not…

Nicki entered the scene froggy style licking lollipops and crafting mixtape tracks like “Kuchi Shop,” to which the world replied “Not again.” Watching Nicki talk shit in a stairwell though, we knew the potential was there. Plus, after that mixtape era, Nicki has gotten better and better. When Lil’ Kim entered the scene with ‘96’s Hard Core (yes, we’re going there), people were none too thrilled with the direction women in Hip Hop were about to take. Rap was still living off the high of tracks like “Ladies First,” plus a budding Lauryn Hill gave the industry hope. If you ask a Lil’ Kim fan now though about Kim’s mark on Hip Hop, she’s the matriarch. We all have to start somewhere, and that’s what Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday really is – a jumping off point for Nicki’s future, whatever that may be.

When Nicki’s real success began toward the late last year (when her BET Awards Cipher opened some eyes that the girl can spit), her emphasis quadrupled. Hip Hop’s tears still hadn’t dried from being left by Lauryn, Jean Grae wasn’t getting the success she deserved, and Rah Digga’s album hadn’t dropped. When Minaj emerged, she had the finesse and lyrical prowess that had jaws dropping and mouths watering for her debut album. Problem was, Nicki wasn’t here to rip mics apart with her teeth. Sure, she knows how to, but she’s outwardly said her goal in music is much greater. She has the attention of young girls everywhere, and is no longer taking that for granted. Pink Friday may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but many will embrace it.

Pink Friday holds no smoke and mirrors; this album is built on Hip-Pop. From the opening synths of “I’m The Best,” it’s obvious that the sound is geared for the mainstream. However, Nicki’s lyrics don’t falter, despite being clogged with a syrup drenched MPC. She rides some Pop rollercoasters better than others, like the Kanye West-assisted “Blazin” and “Moment 4 Life” with Drake. Nicki has a knack for excelling lyrically when she’s competing with others on the track (hence why eyes were left wide open on “Monster” and the PF track “Roman’s Revenge” ). When she’s left to her own devices though, her poppiness comes out, and while “Here I Am” and “Save Me” are surefire wins, the album tracks we were predisposed to (“Right Thru Me” , “Check It Out” and “Your Love” ) appear overwhelming. Nicki has the potential to win the respect of all, but Pink Friday is clearly for the Barbies. Choosing to box out a whole Hip Hop population wasn’t exactly the best move, but Nicki never claimed to be on a strictly Rap path. Jay-Z’s “Moment of Clarity” comes to mind: “If skills sold / Truth be told / I’d probably be / Lyrically / Talib Kweli / Truthfully, I wanna rhyme like Common Sense / But I did five mil. I ain’t been rhymin like Common since.”

That’s not to say hardcore Rap fans can’t find any merit in Pink Friday. “Dear Old Nicki” is reminiscent of her mixtape track “Autobiography,” and Roman Zolanski fans will enjoy the robotics of “Did It On’em”. The three bonus tracks on the deluxe edition – the M.I.A.-inspired “Muny” , “Blow Ya Mind” and the bassy “Super Bass” are probably the best tracks on Pink Friday. Had these parts made the greater whole, the album would have sounded completely different.

Pink Friday was one of the most highly-anticipated albums of 2010, largely due to curiosity. The reality is that it could have never lived up to the hype it prematurely received. Still, there’s room for growth, and Nicki Minaj has both the skills and the following to keep moving up.

    1. I heard about half the album and I will say that I was pleasantly surprised. I am the biggest Young Money critic (some call it hating) and I think they get way more attention than their talent should grant them but Nicki was spittin straight bars on this album. Of course it has the soft shit and “what the fuck is she thinking” shit ,but thankfully these are only a few of the tracks. She definetly has Drake and Wayne beat when it comes to lyrical capability and before you argue with me on this, listen to the album and what she is saying. This girl can rap. Don’t be surprised if she starts ghost writing for Wayne.

Hiphop blessed us with three bangin ass albums this week (Kanye, Banks, and Minaj in that order) and I bought all of them. Support hiphop and make a purchase.

    2. Seriously – who gave this album a 5? Just because you like the album doesn’t mean you can’t be objective. By saying this album is perfect you’re saying it’s on par with Illmatic? F* outta here.

The album is a 3 at best and I agree with everything the reviewer said so it’s no need to rehash it.

    3. Any1 who likes this chick must be smokin dust…..she’s wack….I dont understand y the review is saying she is lyrical…she has no bars….”i’ll kick that hoe…Punt”thats lryics….shes wack i listened to the cd at least 5 times all the way through in a row nd i cant find 1 good thing to say about her…the onlly reason she is big right now is because she is the only female mc making herself acceptable to mainstream audiences….she has the same “SUPER DUPER”PUNCHLINE FLOW THAT IT SEEMS NOWADAYS EVERYONE USES….ND AS FOR THE MILLIONS OF MOMS OUT THERE WHO LET THERE DAUGHTERS LISTEN TO HER #KILLYOSELF….y WOULD U LET YOUR daughter listen to a girl who talks about “im a bad bitch im a cunt”…WAT SO NOW ITS ACCEPTABLE FOR WOMAN TO BE CALLED CUNTS???? REVIEWER GAVE IS 3.5 STARS I GIVE HER 0……SHAME ON THIS WEBSITE FOR EVEN ALLOWING LYRICAL ND NICKI MINAJ IN THE SAME SENTENCE

      1. I understand not liking her because I don’t think she’s very good either, but to say any mother who lets their daughter listen to Nicki should kill themselves is a contradiction in your belief.

So you’d rather have a young girl grow up without a mother than listen to Nicki? You don’t want young girls to refer to themselves as cunts, but it’s cool if they grow up without a mother?

        ….see, it makes no sense.

Cut back on the hate my dude. It’s a bit too much. You don’t like her. We get it…. no need to wish death upon people.

      2. now ur taking wat i said out of context….ill take the #killyoself back jus for u nd replace wit….#C’monSon….happy now????nd to the people saying this is 4 stars or better…..REALLY????? U GUYS GET A JAY LINE…”DO U LISTEN TO MUSIC OR DO U JUST SKIM THROUGH IT”

      3. @William
You sir are a idiot. Go drink some ammonia you dumbass. Wow people like you make me sick. Fuckstick.

      4. okay guy ur tough obviously ur an online thug….o geez im scared…nd fuckstick really thats clever….nd y am i an idiot cuz i said this cd is ass????clarify ur statement buddy

    4. 4/5 — there’s a lot of hot songs on here. most impressive is Roman’s Revenge – she can keep up pretty well with Em. That takes talent.

      1. CAN U POINT SOME OF THAT MUSIC THATS WORTH A 4 RATING..EMINEM IS WHATS WACK ABOUT ROMANS REVENGE..HE CANT EVEN RIDE THE BEAT..THIS ALBUM GAVE ME A HEADACHE..AND ITS MOSTLY FOR TEENAGE GIRLS..HER “REAL” FANS DONT EVEN LIKE THIS SHIT..THEY DONT KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF IT..

    5. I’ll give her credit in that she can spit (at times), but simply not my style for a female emcee. I’ll take Jean Grae or Digga any day of the week over Nicki (or Kim for that matter).

    6. I bought Nicki Minaj album and I love it!! She goes hard on the second track, “I shitted (took a dumb) on them lol.” The best for me has to be “fly” with Rhianna. The chemistry between a Sagittarius and Aquarius is undeniable. The song is uplifting and will leave you with a sense of “women are strong and we can do anything we put our mind to”. The whole album is great. The album brings out so many different emotions in me. Leave it up to Nicki Minaj not to disappointed. Nicki lyrics are the best and up to par with Biggie Smalls if not better. It was because of Nicki that I am listening to hip hop and it was because of Nicki that I went out and purchased my first CD in years. Money well spent.

      1. LMFAO, “Nicki lyrics are the best and up to par with Biggie Smalls if not better.”

“She goes hard on the second track, “I shitted (took a dumb) on them lol.””

        u…are hilarious

    7. WHAT CAN I SAY ABOUT THIS RECORD..NOT MUCH..as a fan of hiphop in general,i am thoroughly disappointed..i was looking forward to a “hot” record by a female mc..somethin not really seen since Remy and lastly KIM..THIS IS MOSTLY PURE BULLSHIT..who tha fuc made these wack ass beats..these hooks are atrocious..these concepts are non-existent..them rhymes and phrases..where is the street shit(did it on em’ is decent)but thats where it stops..songs wit will-i-am(unfathomable)..this shit sound like it should be played on a spaceship..not even on no hatin shit..i think she capable of more..if u gave this shit higher than a 3.u hav no hope..her singles were wack..where that “monster” shit..that “up all night” shit..KIM REALLY IS KILLIN THIS BITCH WIT HER OLD SHIT..REAL TALK

      1. What a weak come back. I kill Nicki with my old shit lol. Lil Kim “old” music lyrically belongs to ghost riders thats first off. Secondly, Lil Kim hasn’t been able to accomplish half of what Nicki Minaj has accomplished. Nicki is the first female that made Bill Board top 100, seven times. Can you say Benjamin Franklin, Lil Kim followers. Nicki Minaj is the FIRST female to make the top 10 RAP list. The FIRST female. Meaning no other female, not Lil Kim, Foxy, Remy, Lauren Hill has accomplished what Nicki Minaj has accomplished. Again, how is Lil Kim beating Nicki Minaj with her old shit? Wait, Lil Kim isn’t lol and she can’t lol.
Nicki is the Queen and Lil Kim knows it. Nicki is better and its been proven time and time again. Bow down bitches. There is a new Queen of Hip Hop in town, Nicki Minaj. Ha! Ha!

      2. FIRST OFF THIS AINT GOT SHIT TO DO WITH BEIN A KIM FAN..THIS ALBUM IS BASURA..AND U A DUMMIE BECAUSE THAT MTV LIST DIDNT FUCKIN EXIST UNTIL A COUPLE YEARS AGO..KIM WENT DOUBLE PLAT 3 DIFFERENT TIMES …CAN NICKI DO THAT..DUMMIE…U AINT GAVE ME A HIT OFF THIS ALBUM YET..

      3. I totally agree wit u this album is just nt memorable and i tried to give it a chance shes a puppet and will go in any direction shes told 2 go . . . i was hoping to hear “monster” nicki but sadly there was no song on the album that compare 2 that 1 verse . . . Wheres lil kim when ya need her

    8. BOOOOOOO! diz album blowz dick! only good song wuz blazin and dat wuz bcuz kanye west destroyd nickgay minaj-a-tois on dat shit. she should retitle dat to “kanye west iz gon blaze me on nov 22” cuz it’z true. watch da numbahz next week and ull c who da real champion iz.

and all u guyz, men, boyz who bought diz album or thinkin bout buyin it, then ur nothin but faggotz. u seriously gon grab dat girly lookin disc and walk up 2 da counter witout gettin laughed at? pick up kanye west’z my beautiful dark twisted fantasy instead. dat’z real muzik and ull get nodz of approval as u walk up 2 da counter. belive me niggaz, it’z happened 2 me.

GOOD MUZIK! GOOD MUZIK! GOOD MUZIK!

    9. I am in love wit pinkfriday..i think it wasnt wat i expected but every song has a meaning but again there are those songs she shut it down on..I will always be a fan of nicki as a person and as an artist..she has takin hip hop mixed it wit pop rnb just hasnt let the oundaries of the genres stop her from expressing herself and i think thats wat all artist should do..expand grow nd dnt let neone mold dem into one stereotype..

    10. Don’t believe the hype!!

She has some tight flows for a cameo but can’t carry the whole album. Handful of good tracks otherwise the rest is pop garbage.

      Sick of these ‘sell-out’ tracks.

    11. So you mean to tell me that Auto-tuned whiny robotic singing is acceptable now? Maybe T-Pain should release a double cd covering classic love songs? The only people who are Stanning for this trash are functionally illiterate tweens who type in non ending Ebonic syntax and ghey dudes who secretly wish they were Minaj. This cd is pure trash.

    12. Bitch is wack as fuck. Only reason people paying her any attention is cause she got a fake ass and is in lil waynes click. shits garbage!

    13. not a nicki hater (like most commenters) but i was extremely disappointed by the bullshit bubblegum production and heartless delivery. i thought if i hear one more highpitched gated sawsynth i would jump out the window.
u could have been great, girl. not even one classic song on it? We want monster-nicki not bubblegum-nicki

    14. I though the album was great, show how multi talented she was while feeding her mainstream and itty bitty piggy fans,

    15. “Rap is like a setup\
      A lot of games\
A lot of rappers with colorful names\
      “I’m so and so”\
      “I’m this”, “I’m that”\
      But they all just wick-wick-wack”

    16. What were people honestly expecting? it was always going to be a more feminine sound to it. She was never going to be Nas or Raekwon was she. I enjoyed the album, credit where it’s due, catchy and Nicki has some good verses. Some say she was the best on Kanye’s monster…

    17. it would have been better if the beats didn’t sound so poppy and if she rapped more. regardless, nicki is not a half bad rapper.

    18. This album is great. If the extent of your hip hop appreciation is hard core shit then of course you’re not going to feel it–just look at the cover! I don’t think it’s a “pop” album either though. Nicki really impressed me with the Monster verse and this album does not disappoint. It’s catchy as hell and I look forward to future releases. It took me about half a year to learn to appreciate this girl and now respect is due where it’s due. Nobody sounds like Nicki to my ears. It’s like she took the good qualities of Drake and Wayne (both who I can’t stand), added a crazy british accent, and got busy over some wild production. I’m down with it.

      1. Bottom line is pop is not hip hop. Anybody that is true to hip hop will not embrace this chick. It’s about lyrics point blank, she came hard on one record, the rest is Sesame St. rhyming…she sucks sorry but if you like female artists whose craft is sick to def look up Jean Grae and Tiye Phoenix, the only reason they don’t get shine like this chick is because they refuse to sell out. This chick is not talented at all…

    19. The album is ok, a few stand out tracks but then far too many skipable tracks

I dont think coming out the same week that Kanye releases the best album of the year by far has helped her

      1. Kanye’s album is amazing but I’m betting Nicki sells more albums in the first week. I was at Target and Best Buy yesterday. Nicki emptied the shelves at Target and Best Buy was carrying twice as many Pink Fridays as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasys meaning they expect to sell far more of Nicki’s album. I’m interested to see though…maybe two hip-
hop albums sell a milli in the same first week?!

      2. You’re Smoking crack if you think Nicki Minaj will outsell kanye west. His last hip hop album almost sold 950k in his first week. PLUS sales have decreased since then.

    20. i’d rather listen to eve, lauryn hill, rah digga, lil kim, foxy brown, trina, shawna, jean grae, mc lyte, lady of rage, lady luck, remy ma or even salt n peppa over this any day!!

    21. I was certainly expecting Nicki to represent for the what’s missing in hiphop (female lyricists), but this is just not it. This album should have been so much better than it is. I am thoroughly disappointed.

    22. Oh damn..ive been coming to Hiphopdx for years and never commented. But 3.5? Really hiphopdx..this jawn was too wack. Like i listened to the album so that maybe Nicki could change my mind. But are y’all getting paid to be nice on her? lol Seriously. Theres like 3 good tracks on here..

    23. Looking at the other albums rated 3.5 this should be rated lower. Just an opinion though. Nothing new from her, copied flow that everyone on YM uses. I’ll pass, they should of picked better people to write some of these reviews.

    24. Honestly I feel like the has the same flow Drake has but animates her voice. Which on some songs sounds good on other songs sounds gimmicky.

I don’t hate Nicki and I want more female rappers to be popular, but this just isn’t something I’ll be listening too in a month

    25. I love monster and Romens Revenge but all around she is average at this point just like drake. Also like drake she is singing trying to get cross appeal when in the end it sounds really whack. Again like Drake if she just rhymed and brought lyrical shit she would still sell and be more liked

    26. Theres only like 3 good songs… I wuz expecting her to rep for the ladies and come out with some hard hitting songs but there all fluffy weak shit. DISSAPOINTING!

    27. I dunno. I’m lookin at this album with a different perspective than I would an artist from 10 years ago. Granted she sounds like the whole YM crew but she lays down lines that you have to pay attention to and figure out what she’s really saying…. I’d say a 3.5 is adequate for this generation of Hip-Hop. We’ll see if she falls for the sophmore slump 95% of the artists go through.

    28. FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU… THATS BASICALLY WHAT HIP HOP DX IS SAYING TO HIP HOP BY GIVING THIS CD A 3 1/2!!!!

    29. Solid debut. The HipHop game needed a female artist.

A little confused how this gets a 3 1/2 like the Cudi album. Inconsistent reviews. This is a 3, Cudi a 4.

    30. good pop music without a female artist singing the whole time. Genius, soon to be platinum. musically it gets a 3.5, as a hiphop record it gets 2.

    31. this is not a RAP album. most of the angry posts were people looking for female RAP. if you notice the reason why they’re aren’t female RAP albums is because that doens’t sell. i think trina came out a few months ago why didn’t all you run out and support that? seems like what you WANT you aren’t willing to support financially, but burn copies and download for free. btw, pink friday is number two on itunes. think about it.

    32. Has anyone else noticed that as far as mainstream artists are concerned, its just a dozen people collaborating with each other staying on the airwaves. Jay-Z, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Nicki, Drake, Wayne, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, T.I., Eminem, etc…..

      1. I have been waiting for somebody to bring that up…. That is exactly whats going on. Everybody who has the potential to go Gold & Platinum right now. They are unifying their star power, thats why alot of the albums this year have had alot of features.

    33. and…………i got kanye’s album, chemical romance, and rihanna’s album. when you broaden your range and mind you can be more receptive to things other than shoot so and so or sex sex sex or name brands in every other line. interesting how the top artists don’t pattern their music around that anymore. hmmmmmmmm.

    34. suprised DX would even review this album

even more suprised they would give it a positive review

actually I’m not suprised considering DX is the new XXL

    35. I like nicki minaj but this album sucks. . . listening 2 it she doesnt really have her own sound which makes her perfect 4 features but bad when it comes to her debut album . . . and i can get over the poppiness if it wasnt so much auto tune singing cause every time she sings on a song her raps suk ! 2/5

    36. somebody please explain to me why this bullshit album gets same rating as k-rino’s!
done with reading reviews from hiphopdx

    37. this album was terrible the fact a girl is reviewing leads one to believe she is fighting for her own gender. this 3.5 star rating is not honest the raps r terrible and the beats r poppish

    38. 1/5….its jus sad to see the industry go down like this that such an album can get hype and even worse its goin to sell…mayn i wish jean grae had all this hype

    39. Sorry, but no. Nicki can rap. That is what she is good at.(A little) Not Singing. If I bought a cd with Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Celine Dion or even Luciano Pavoratti that had 16 tracks on it. 3 out 16 songs they sung on. The other 13 they decided to experiment with beatboxing and hardcore grimey rhymes about the streets, they would be chased out of the music industry. The rest of the public are forced to put up with someone singing who can’t sing? Ashanti all over again.

    40. her lyrics are fucking terrible……right thru me rhyming the whole song in present continuos verbs is fucking terrible……your love bruce willis line is fucking terrible…..i dare you, bambi – is fucking terrible….these bitches is my stepsons is fucking terrible…….you are gone, near – is fucking terrible…….her only asset is flow, which didnt really show in the album. Album is a fucking trash bin lunch

    41. And all people saying she hold her own against eminem on roman’s revenge? please….hang it up – plasma….fucking trash…hey nicki – asthma…..wtf She is only good for features. there is no energy like hello good morning, monster, bottoms up on this album…..fucking trash…..even my trash does not eat this shit fucking toilet piss

    42. this proves nicki isnt tryna be the next lil kim.she’s tryna do her own thing.its good to hear a female not just talk about sex and fighting all the time. she put out the kind of album she wanted to, she didnt conform.its her 1st album shes still going as an artist.

    43. Really well written review. You were able to clarify not only what the album sounds like in it’s various points, but also her motivations, position in the game, and the general state of the industry that would produce this album.

I personally might not listen to this front-back much, but there are some bangers, and you got give it to her for producing a consistent quality debut. Remember when artists had a chance to put out an album or two and get their style/skills in place before everyone dropped the gavel and made their judgement?

Anyway, Roman’s Revenge is pretty disgusting. Bangs hard. Nicki can keep up with Em. Not many can say that. (Not to mention Monster)

      1. asfor monster she co wrote this lyrics wid kanye! I said it on an I interview last month on BBC 1xtra. She is an actor. but in musical sense . With a style created she performs but not too well live. Even massive attack was Wack and she is still getting paid and plays. In on honest her music is terrible, give or take mix tapes.
Her image is what saves her!

Hold how is everyone forgetting about mz eve! She would murder her on a track hands down half deaf!

As with an artists that is defined by image, the music comes second. Therefore, she has to go to greater extremes to keep he audience entertained. Because with her music alone is just not cutting it.

    44. Weirdo tryna stand out in the crowd with the weirdo shit but whgen you strip all that away its a pretty shitty effort.

    45. id rather watch 20’s porn, through headhones, than listen to the full 30 second samples on this piece of shit.
hiphopdx is dead when they give 5 stars to the worst outkast album, 4 stars to the worst brotha lynch album, fair scores to the HORRIBLE paul wall albums, and THIS is rated better than TEAR GAS??
i brought that up because i listen to bay shit, YOU guys just jam overrated swag rap apparently. you guys should just review pre-millenium joints if ur that bored. Andre Nickatina could rap circles around vado, j.cole or anyone else you overhype on this site, and that’s just one artist. bay has alot of gangster rap, but it sounds better than the “hottest jams” of the week. you guys don’t know shit about rap if you’re dissing spm (whos the mexican version of 2pac) who doesnt need samples to make good music, but ALL HAIL KANYE who needs samples to make music period.
if a new Rhymesayers album came out you guys would cum yourselves, cause your not gettin any rockin out to that shit.

      1. @ sco-
Man, a city bitch couldn’t have said ANY better myself.
It’s to the point now where I rather listen to the voices in my head while mobbin around now than the wack ass radio and the songs they shove down our throats.
I wanted to think this bitch could pull this off.
        Bay shit go PERIOD.
And they all bite our shit yet we get no credit.
        mainstream “hip pop” is garbage.
fuck kanye. young money.n all that shit.

    46. She sucks point blank, it’s so puzzling how people try to justify her wackness as innovative. It is just a recycling of Kim on a much lower scale. Kim was grimy, true essential hip-hop, this chick is not close to her level. She has the nerve to diss Kim and everyone is jumping on Kim for responding, but check those earlier mix tapes Nicki started that mess! It’s really simple to have relevance in the game of hip-hop your lyrics have to be dope, a trained puppy can do what she does. Lauryn will shut her down, Kim definitely will shut her down, even old school MC Lyte will shut her down, why because they were about a voice to stand out from the men in the game. This chick is not going to memorable, the blew her up to sadly disappoint. She needs to revamp and just be herself, this Barbie monster stuff is just ridiculous. I can’t wait until people recognize game and realize that this is some commercial BS, the winners are Young Money, not Nicki Minaj, she got played into becoming a product not a talented artist.

    47. “Pink Friday is clearly for the Barbies” – very true, which makes this review correct. She’s definitely doing something else in her own way and it’s not just talking shit. The usage of Tears For Fears, Annie Lennox samples and songs written alike, also show a direction she’s trying to go in. She’s got a talent but I think it’s shooting in too many clashing areas. Her “above you bitches” status gets ruined when she attempts to diss or acknowledge them. It’s almost as if she’d rather not do it, but does so becuz someone’s telling her to. She’s too young to fully fill her adult shoes and too old to be acting foolish. I guess I’m wishing she’d use her witts more consistently. I don’t hate this album but I doubt I’m gonna play it again. I just wanted to hear it before I said anything wrong about it. This review is as fair as it gets.

    48. You guys are buggin with this review, I’ve seen you give way better and way more real shit the same score as this…this bitch is garbo.

    49. Some great songs. Some weird songs. I agree that Nicki doesn’t seem to know where to go with a whole album to fill. I think it’s cause the album doesn’t go enough into her real experiences. Swap a couple songs/verses about her awesomeness with more insightful, personal experience songs and the album could have been great (4-4.5 stars).
      I give the deluxe version a 3 .
      – 3.5 ’cause she’s hawt 😛

    50. This album is just not that good. I really feel like people dont understand what a good album really sounds like anymore. If you wanna hear a good body of work listen to: Joe Budden- Mood Musik 4, J. Cole- Friday Night Lights, Reks- In Between The Lines 2, or John Regan- Sorry I’m Late. Also, im sick of people talking about her appearance like it makes her a better rapper or something. At the end of the day when you are listening to her music you dont see her.

    51. WHAT YOU SAYIN?! yeah, i was kinda let down by the cd…but it shows a diff. side of Nicki…like she said..she wanted to showcase Nicki, Onika, Roman…and everyone else….

    52. haters! the whole cd may not be excellent, but find me one where every single track is great… won’t happen. listen to roman’s revenge, blazin, and moment for life. these are dope ass tracks plus there is more. i cant remember the last time i actually enjoyed a female rapper, but this girl got flow.

    53. DID YOU KNOW THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “FREEDOM OF SPEECH” IN THE UNITED KINGDOM????

    54. You know what fuck this shit! Im given this album 5 stars cuz you haters or pissing me the fuck off! This album is not that bad…actually it was better than I expected. I love how you faggots say this shit is pop rap SMH you faggots dont even know what pop rap sounds like. I know of artist that would make hip hop heads kll themselves. Also stop brining up femces who haven’t made music in like a decade its fucking stupid! No we haven’t forgotton about eve kim and foxy… but let me ask you WHERE THE FUCK ARE THEY HUH!!!!???? stop saying so & so could kill nicki we all ready know that shit! let ths girl get her fucking shine and bump your old ass kim albums fuck!

    55. It’s decent and further more it is a step the right direction. People being TOO harsh for no reason. Opinions without merit are worthless when criticizing.

    56. People were expecting a classic album?
She is the perfect example of Hip Pop.
Why would she put out a classic album to gain fame when she has already been deemed the Queen of Hip Hop? You dummys need to realize that we need to make these artists give us classic material before we give them titles.

She’s got some skills and style, but not the saviour of hip hop

    57. I’m Givin her a 5 just because there Too Many Haters Givin it below a 3, and ya’ll no its at least a 3, and im not even a fan! Lupe Fiasco All Day!

    58. Trash. I was expecting much much more out of Nicki. This is truly garbage and I want my money back. Disapointed. She gets a mear 2 stars from me and thats alot.

    59. Not the album I expected. The talent is definitely there.

      The album appears unfinished.

After the first 3 tracks – I was disappointed.

Somebody wrote that it was like Drake’s album and they were right.

But it will sell. The marketing package is there for her to be a super hero with maybe a comic book too.

Hip Pop is endorsed by the numbers and not the opinions of true HipHop fans.

When this goes platinum – at the end of the day – that will justify what the industry releases for the future.

    60. I’ll give Nicki her props. Yes, I know this isn’t true Hip-Hop. But it does show on some tracks that she’s definitely got skills, she just needs to show ’em more.

Problem is, all this over poppy bullshit. Just way too much electronic, fluffy-assed & poppy shit.

The other problem: she has no idea of what to sound like on this shit. We go from some lyrical shit to overly fluffy bullshit to some strange shit. It doesn’t sound natural or kinda dope; it just clashes all over the place.

Really, I can’t see this getting more than 2.5/5. Sure, she comes correct sometimes & doesn’t sing a lot & some beats do get decent, but it sounds like all the other fluffy-assed poppy bullshit full of electronic sounds with weak rapping on radio.

      1. Good points, but this is a common problem with pop records nowadays – diversity for diversity sake. and what it means is artists trying to write songs in genres they don’t really understand.

    61. I wasn’t feeling Nicki at first, but she’s grown on me. She’s actually a really dope rapper. She’s probably the most versatile female artist in hip-hop that I can recall. She can sound like pretty much anything. It’s impossible to pigeonhole her.

    62. That is way too high a rating. Nicki Minaj is like a 4, maybe a 4.5 as a rapper. Which is why I give this album a 2.

Until the industry keeps putting out trash albums by talented rappers such as Em, BOB, and Minaj… I am boycotting.

She can rap her ass off, she should be working exclusively with Kanye doing THUG shit.

    63. poppy trash.
just like Thank Me Later the fake ass indutry builds people like drake, wayne and minaj as great artists but when the album comes out its just average, mediocre crap. gone today forgotten tomorrow.

    64. im gonna get some hate for this one…Nicki Minaj is the best female rapper out right now. if you disagree idk what year your living in. and those who says shes garbage…really? your telling me she cannot spit…ok yaw dumbfucks “you can take the heat like Lebron”. Bangin album Nicki fuck these dumbass cocksuckers who try to get all deep and are stuck on 90s hiphop…get with the times you weird ass little pricks

      1. Yes i agree with u on half of that see you got problems she willl never be the best u know why cause she can never i mean NEVER measure up to trina thanks

      2. @bom919: There’s something you’re leaving out. Yeah she the nicest out…because she the ONLY female MC out! And I’m not sayin’ she can’t spit…it’s that this jawn spits blanks. She says ABSOLUTELY nothing! You may be able to tolerate that schizo broad but I need a female of substance in her rhymes. That’s why when it comes to female MCs I bless my ears and mind with some MC Lyte, Rah Digga, Jean Grae, Bahamadia and YES even Kim. But in all honesty I wanted to say that this album is more pop than Hip-Hop but its only her first LP. And then I seen this comic gem: “Bangin album Nicki fuck these dumbass cocksuckers who try to get all deep and are stuck on 90s hiphop…get with the times you weird ass little pricks” That was arguably the most ignorant shit I’ve heard all year! You can stick to the bubble gum rap that you’re used to. Oh and for all the fans of this Lil Shanice stunt double….just be grateful that skills don’t sell, because if they did that jawn wouldn’t see a dime, and be oh so grateful Remy’s in the system…she’d tear the skin off Nicki Garbaj’s back!!!

      3. @Brian Tate – She says nothing you are so right, but who else says nothing? Lil. Wayne, Gucci Mane, and 3/4’s of the Commercial Bullshit they play on the radio.

    65. im not really that much of a nicki minaj fan shes to poppy for me but this was a decent albaum for her better then thank me later anyway

      1. STRIGHT UP IM BOUT TO PUT YOU IN CHECK IF YOU THINK IT’S *WACK* WHY ARE YOU ON THIS PAGE YOU MUST HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT HER MUST HAVE HEARD THE CD STARTED THINKING MAN WHY COULDNT I DO THAT GOT MAD AND STARTED HATING WOW HATERS THESE DAYS

    66. She failed to meet my expectation. Her album is too bubblegum pop. I like her verses here and there but she can’t stand alone on songs.

    67. I agree with the review, even though I think Nicky Spits like non other female right now….we need to hear something like that. But please, is it me or is Young Money publishing same beats for everyone…????

    68. Excellent album. Nicki has taken female hip hop artist into the century. She is definitely the leader of the new breed of female rappers. This is HER TIME. Go Nicki!!!

    69. Why can’t we just have the whole young money group minus Curren$y die in a plane crash or get hit by a bus?

    70. This album is the embodiment of average. She has potential, but this shit is too poppy. Nicki can’t sing, and she drowned the album in her singing. Half the album is fairly good, the other half is below average. I’d also like to point out that she got killed by every rap feature on the album, and the songs the features are on, would be weak without said features.

    71. This album is surprisingly pop/r&b, although is that really that surprising? Pretty much every hit rap song recently has a pop or r&b tinged hook or chorus, and that is exactly what Nicki has done on this record. The production fits very well with Minaj’s flow and personality, and, despite the heavy pop sound, Minaj’s lyrics and verses still go in, especially on Romans Revenge and Blazin. Nicki promised that Pink Friday would have something for her new and old fans alike, and being a fan of both her new and old styles, I was definitely impressed with this album.

    72. She can’t hold Lil Kim’s torch. Not even a candle. If you compare debut albums between Lil Kim and this fake, Lil Kims first album was and is still fire.

      1. IM BOUT TO GET YOUR NO MONEY STANKY HATING ASS SUCH A HATER YOUS MAKE ME SICK WITH YOUR RETARD ASS AHAHAHHA HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR SELF SO SCARY PUT YOURSELF AS ANONOMOUS IAHHAHHA GO FALL OF A BRIDGE

    73. I like the album but it’s definitely hit-and-miss. I’m just glad there are six bonus songs to add to the standard thirteen because those six save the album for me. There are far too many poppy tracks on the regular album for this to be a bonafide hip-hop record.

That said, I do want to address one thing–No comparison of this album to Lil’ Kim’s debut is going to be fair, ’cause Minaj didn’t have B.I.G. around to write the record for her.

    74. I think the album was alright and her album is selling great compared to other femcee’s. Also of course her album wasn’t better than Kim’s debut album because she(Nicki) didn’t have anybody write her stuff especially since Kim’s stuff was wrote by Big so of course it would be a good album.

    75. I’ll admit, I wasn’t super impressed with this album, but to say it’s wack is stupid. The review is rated so high because it has to be written by someone who likes THIS type of Hip-Hop. If you like other types of Hip-Hop, then you might not like it. The reviewer actually clearly states this in the review. While this has many pop-like tracks, it still retains the lyrical performance one expects from Nicki. So, if your a Minaj fan, you going to dig this, as it tends to aim toward her fan base rather than taking a run out to the other groups of Hip-Hop. Now, I wouldn’t buy this album, but I respect what Nicki does. She does her thing, and no one can argue with an artist when she’s pleasing crowds. While this album isn’t for everyone, it will defiantly please HER fans. And for that, I give it a 3.5/5

    76. Debut is still mad underrated, it’s not a classic, but is realistically a 4, tbh. You don’t have subject matter and versatility like this on female rap albums anymore. And it’s lyrical and deep for a majority of the project, including the bonus tracks which are even better. Meanwhile niggas are still bumping Trap, Club and Gangster bullshit as if that is changing Hip-Hop.
