Jadakiss – I Love You: A Dedication to My Fans

After releasing The Last Kiss to mixed reviews, Jadakiss returns with his second mixtape since then, I Love You. A little less street than most mixtapes, the official Def Jam release was made to reach as many of Jada’s fans as possible and thank them for supporting him through these many years. The sentiment could easily come off as corny or insincere, but Jadakiss puts real effort into the collection of tracks, so he actually sounds like he means it.

Instead of the usual “here to conquer the game” type of opener, things start on a much lighter nore with “Hold You Down,” a radio-friendly summer jam featuring an R&B hook from Emanny. This would be a bad start for some, but Jadakiss has always been adept at making commercial tracks that still appeal to the streets, so it feels more like cookout music than something you’d hear while buying sequined jeans. He still drops hustler science on “Lil Bruh” but by the same token, it won’t alienate fans of “How 2 Feel” and its Al B. Sure!-interpolated hook.

“Accessible” or not, it wouldn’t be a Jadakiss album without him trading lines with Styles P over a dark beat and “Lay Em Down” fills the slot appropriately. The remix to “Inkredible” comes along later (with the always-welcome Rick Ross) to balance out “Toast To That,” a more laid-back, celebratory affair that makes a surprising reference to his first solo classic from L.O.X.’s “Money Power Respect”. Hearing the softer side of Kiss might get old at a certain point, but I Love You smartly keeps it short with nine songs, coming and going fast enough to leave us wanting more.

No one is likely to confuse I Love You with a real album given its reused tracks and limited scope, but it’s still actually better than The Last Kiss in many respects. It’s certainly worth listening to and does manage to earn the “official mixtape” status it’s been granted by Def Jam.  As usual, the date for Jada’s next actual album seems to be up in the air, but I Love You makes the wait a little easier.

    1. The beats are crisp and tight even tho they’re on the RnBish side of things… but nonetheless in this era of top notch mixtapes see(Big K.R.I.T., J Cole, Fab, Wiz, Currency, etc) Jada could’ve did better and gave the fans what they really wanted a Top 5 Dead or Live performance, but instead he gave us I Love You, which is not bad but not great either… A weak 4 stars. Mainly bcuz Jada’s worst is usually better than most MC’s best

      1. Co-sign!! Not bad but not great either. I’ll listen to this a few times but i’ll probably forget about it.

      1. I wouldn’t say sucks. . . But I would say they are forgettable. I dig Jada, but he hasn’t put out one cd that has enough replay value.

      2. ALL of his albums suck?? SON, what the FUCK are you smokin’??! Personally, i think his debut album is one of the illest hip hop albums ever. That shit was BANANAS. Have you even listenend to it???

    2. album fucking sucks. jadakiss and def jam, both deserve blame, for releasing this cheap piece of shit. jadakiss one of the best rappers out but he’s fucking lazy. the internet age exposed just how lazy jadakiss is. he gets outworked by a lot of wack niggas. how can this drop with no promotion, with retail expectations, when the LOX havent been able to drop an album in over 10 years? and now jada is rapping over r and b synth electronica like every other sweet unoriginal bitch made NY nigga. the beats suck, jada is not coming with the lines you gotta rewind, and the whole vibe is weak. def jam is run by a bunch of monkeys. niggas dont know what the fuck theyre doing. nas cant drop lost tapes 2 but they drop jada mixtapes for SALE. jeezy can’t get a date, but the worst project jada ever done gets a retail release with 0 buzz. sheek sold 5k on def jam with a garbage album. get a hint def jam. get a hint d block.

    3. I dig this joint. Jada’s basically known for tracks not albums. By mixtape standards this is solid.

    4. Hold you down” sounds like a radio hit to me .
make a video and its all good kiss .

LAY EM DOWN is dope as hell . best track

officer ricky ? why ? no need for him

    5. I love this mixtape (not album)
Its something new from Jadakiss & he killed it. People need to stop hatin’, just becuz he doesn’t wanna release the same shit over & over again. He’s getting older & this mixtape shows a more mature side of him

      I give it a 5

    6. Shit is trash. I don’t wanna hear Kiss over some R&B love shit for an entire album/mixtape. Other than the toast it up joint, the Styles P joint, and “2 The Streets” this shit is certified garbage. This is more like a slap in the face than a thank you to the fans. That’s how I take it.

    7. in an interview about a week before this came out Jada said “there wernt gonna be any hooks” and “it was for cruzin in the hood” This shit comes out and its full of gay hooks. Jadakiss is amazing but i never listen to him because of the cheezy r&b hooks
